way to make HALOT show transcriptions in original language fonts?

Often HALOT will list meanings in cognate languages for supporting the nuance argued for.

I have Ugaritic fonts installed and they work in Logos; I made a custom highlight which uses Ugaritic.

I'm wondering is there a way to turn on the Ugaritic fonts in HALOT so whenever an Ugaritic word is listed it will show?

If not, is there some visual filter trickery that could be done? For example HALOT always marks the Ugaritic entry with "Ug.", can I make a filter that says "find word Ug. and make next word use these fonts?"

I'd also like to turn on Arabic and Syriac the way they are turned on in Extended BDB.

Here's a screen shot from HALOT where an Ugaritic word is used in the definition of a Hebrew word.

The problem, I believe, is that paper HALOT transliterates, and Logos tries to match that. I'd be interested in being able to retroject as well, as sometimes I find it easier to recognize/read in the original script. I understand Hebrew in Hebrew script much faster than transliterated Hebrew.

Yes, you're right; I have HALOT on my bookshelf. I'm with you on transliterations; Hebrew transliteration or others; even on scripts where I'm slow to read them (Arabic/Syriac) I prefer to force myself through it so I can improve. Also, I do a better job categorizing in my memory where a cognate came from if I see it in that language's proper script; otherwise the waters get muddled in my mind.

I was just wondering if there is any kind of mechanism to create a visual filter where it can change the font.

We can make filters which capitalize letters and such (a capital A is a different unicode character than a lowercase a); and I can find the ugaritic words in HALOT (when there is just 1 word) by searching on the "Ug." key word; so it seems this may be possible.

I expect/hope a developer will say "yes but then the keymapping will be off so you'll get the wrong letters anyway".

If it's possible to just change the font of letters then heck I'd be willing to learn how to make a new keymap for an Ugaritic font to map it to the right transliteration letters if they don't map already; or find a font which maps accordingly.

OK I'm closer; well the first step.

I just made a visual filter which when I highlight something changes it to an ugaritic font. See pic 1 then pic 2.

It's not properly converting the ayin but the other 3 letters it got right.

Next I need to find out if it's just ayin or other letters that miss the map also. Then if anyone can help,

how do I write a query for my filter that says "get me the word after 'Ug.'".

I could do this with regular expressions but I don't think that's supported.

I'm trying:

1 WORD AFTER Ug.

but just getting "Ug." highlighted

I'm trying:

The syntax is incorrect and you need a wildcard * for 'any' word e.g.

* AFTER 1 WORD Ug.

But the search is incredibly slow and not recommended for a Visual filter.

Is there a way (just so I can learn) I looked over the wiki, to exclude the Ug. from the results of the search? SO I just get the word after it?

No! All Search terms will be highlighted. The only way is to create a list of the Ug. words e.g. UgWord1, UgWord2, UgWord3, UgWord4... (you can use multiple search lines).

Well I got the highlighter working right.

I had to change the font character mapping for certain unicode volues of the transliteration characters and rebuild the font, but my "reverse transliteration" highlighter now works haha.

If anyone wants this just reply and I'm happy to share. You just highlight the transliteration that you want to see encoded as Ugaritic cuneiform.

Thanks Doc, so are you suggesting that I build one long string query with [match marks] which explicitly lists all known Ugaritic words?

Sorry if I'm missing something. If that is your suggestion I do have the Gordon text which has a large Ugaritic lexicon, sometimes glosses only that I could maybe extract such keywords from. The issue with this approach is since these lexicons HALOT and Gordon, usually list just the root letters of the word so even if I have a list of all of them, applying my visual filter in this manner will pick up false positives from Akkadian and other semitic language entries in HALOT and will apply my "reverse transliteration" to them as well.

Unless we can some how scope it with the string literal "Ug." within 1 word or something like that?
