What Features Do Not Work Offline?

Are all features for any given Logos 7 base package available for use while working offline?

I have asked different customer service people, and have been given conflicting answers. For example, I've been told that the "Bible Browser" does not work when offline by one rep, that it does work while offline by another, and that it "should" work while offline by yet another who wasn't sure (and that I could get a full refund within 30 days if it doesn't!).

When I do Bible study, I purposely do so offline to avoid distractions from emails, messages, the temptation to surf, and so on, nor do I answer the phone unless its a call from my wife.

Furthermore, I do not like being tethered to the internet for a program to function properly due to poor internet reception where I live and work, and thus this consideration is a make or break for me in terms of purchasing the software. I am definitely NOT in the market for anything that requires me to be online 24/7, requires an ongoing subscription, or demands an online login in order to use the program.

I ask here in the hope that users/customers might be able to answer a question that I have not been able to get clarified from sales reps.

I already own an extensive physical library of about $25k in books, and I'm looking at Logos software as a means to duplicate and extend that library digitally, so its very important that I know precisely what I'm getting into before investing heavily into it, especially given my trepidation concerning the EULA. The robust feature of Logos seem to be the edge it has over the software of its competitors, but not (for me) if they are not all available while working offline.

If any users of the software could confirm which features do not work while offline, I would be greatly obliged.

Thank you for your time.

Hi John - and welcome to the forums

Are all features for any given Logos 7 base package available for use while working offline?

No - some do require an Internet connection to function properly.

I am definitely NOT in the market for anything that requires me to be online 24/7, requires an ongoing subscription, or demands an online login in order to use the program.

There is no requirement to be online 24/7, nor to have an ongoing subscription (although some features are made available earlier to those who have a subscription). There is a login requirement which - when online - does connect you to Faithlife (Logos) servers but it is possible to use the software offline.

If any users of the software could confirm which features do not work while offline, I would be greatly obliged.

This is probably not a complete list but hopefully close!

    1. Sharing documents you have created with others users requires an online connection
    2. Use of "Community Tags" or "Popular Highlights" requires an online connection. These allow us to see ways in which other users have tagged resources or where multiple people have highlighted resources. From what you say I doubt if this is a requirement for you
    3. Media Collections - when online this adds media content to a range of searches / tools
    4. Atlas - using the Logos Atlas requires an online connection. There are a lot of maps-based resources, however, that are available offline
    5. Some aspects of the "Everything" search - a search function that draws in data from a number of different areas  - requires an online connection for some of those to work
    6. The "Lemma in Passage" section - searching for resources that discuss a particular lemma - requires an online connection
    7. "Morph Query Document" - a relatively new method for searching for morphological terms - requires an online connection. But general morph searching is available offline
    8. The Bible Browser does require an online connection

    Hope this helps, Graham

My understanding is that it is only the following that require an active internet link.

Specific types of search that can put a too great load on a normal domestic computers resources,

Activities where the internet is an essential and obvious part of the action, and

activities where access is required to a huge (in number of gigabytes) range of resources that most of us would not wish to fill our storage with especially on a mobile machine.

In other words, if an activity can be dealt with offline it is. I am using Logos offline now as I do not have internet access other than via my smart phone in the accommodation where I am staying this week and have no problems with what I am doing.
Hopefully others can comment if they have problems working off-line.

    Welcome [:D]

Online login for applications on Windows and Mac is needed for sign-in (cached for later offline use) followed by download of your library resources to your computer. After your resources have completed downloading, program setting Use Internet can be changed from Yes to No followed by restarting application (indexing can continue while program is restarted)

Online is also needed to download application updates and resource purchases/updates. Thankful can download to one computer then use scan command for copying resources into another Logos/Verbum installation. Logos wiki has => Quick Installation onto multiple computers (Windows) and => Quick Installation onto Multiple Macs

Are all features for any given Logos 7 base package available for use while working offline?

No, Logos wiki has => Online Only that lists features needing internet connection, with many of them having links to feature announcement/description.

Thankful for many features that do work offline. After resources are downloaded, indexing of those resources is done on your computer for searching.

The robust feature of Logos seem to be the edge it has over the software of its competitors, but not (for me) if they are not all available while working offline.

Any particular feature(s) of interest to you ? A number of Online Only features have offline alternatives. For example, an alternative for Atlas is the Logos Deluxe Map Set and Biblical Places Map

Zoomable "The Biblical World" was the Logos 5 Map that was superseded by Atlas (screen shot from Logos while offline). Hovering over a place has a pop-up. Clicking a place opens Factbook.

  • Is there any overlap between the Atlas, the Deluxe Map Set, and the Biblical Places Map?

Logos 6 New Feature: Atlas should be a superset of older maps plus many more. Logos Desktop Beta has discussion => Beta 7.14 Atlas comments

If you search the help file for "Net" you'll find that each feature requiring a network connect has been tagged with [Net].

  • Updated Logos wiki => Online Only

If you search the help file for "Net" you'll find that each feature requiring a network connect has been tagged with [Net].

Added Help search to Online Only plus noted wiki includes more so Help resource has opportunities for more documentation:

The loss of the Bible Browser while offline is a consideration, in terms of making a purchase of the software and building a digital library, that I need to assess carefully before I buy in, especially given that there are competing software platforms that are far less and offer better licensing terms.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am evaluating the information I've been given, and appreciate the feedback.

  • The loss of the Bible Browser while offline is a consideration ...

Bible Browser is a graphical search interface. Thread => searching Pauline epistles for quotes from Isaiah includes search {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Is>} that can be shown in Bible Browser using

    • Intertext > Source > Isaiah

Same words and verses can be found using search (albeit syntax can be a bit complicated). Also search can combine Bible Browser aspects: e.g. Intertext Source of Daniel OR Ezekiel.

    {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Dn>} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Ezk>}

Thread has a search question example with several answers => I'm sorry to ask again...Can you help me with this search?

Thankful for many friendly forum discussions: have learned a lot plus have a lot to learn

    Keep Smiling [:)]
