Layout Snapshot's stopped working

Hi, Logos has stopped taking layout snapshots, I used these a lot and would like to get it working again.
Any ideas? Is this a bug in the new version 4.2b?

Not on my machine. One was created after I woke it up this morning. Others were daily or skipped a few days; the frequency seems to depend on changes made or restarting/waking L4.

Thanks Dave... so if it's not a bug, how can I get some help to fix the problem? Each time I clicked on the Layout button I got a snapshot, but now I am getting nothing. I am sure it stopped after the latest update.
I use this feature a lot to keep track of what I have been doing and to get back to where I was. I really need some help to get it working again.

A Now snapshot is available when you open the Layouts menu - so this is not happening for you?
Start L4 with CTRL key held and this should enable logging (or start permanent logging). Open the Layouts menu two or three times with at least 1 minute between each and then upload logos4.log before you restart L4.

You do know about the normal way of saving a layout, right?

Hi Dave,
Thanks again for your reply! Let me give more detail...
When I open the Layouts menu, I see the "Now" Snapshot as usual. Up until lately, that would be kept in the list on the right column of the Layouts menu with a timestamp. If I were to open the Layouts menu again 10 minutes later, I would see that snapshot along with the timestamp for 10 minutes earlier. This is not happening anymore. It doesn't keep the "Now" snapshot like it used to - now I can see the snapshot, but it is no longer kept in the list on the right column.
I know that you can name the layouts and save them like that, but I don't want to have to keep doing that. (In fact, I haven't tested that functionality yet to see if it is still working). I usually just open the Layouts menu to take a snapshot. I do clear the list down every few days.
I will enable logging as you suggested and upload the log when I get home tonight.
Thanks again!!

Hi fgh, Yes, I have some saved layouts, but I only save named layouts for specific things I work on. Meanwhile, I use the snapshots, a feature that I really like to use. It is no longer working...

OK, I have uploaded the log and this is an explanation of what happened after opening with logging:
Logos was already opened on my PC so I first closed down Logos at 20:39. This saved a snapshot of the open books.
I re-opened Logos and opened a Bible then took a snapshot by opening the Layouts menu at 20:43. I could see a “Now” snapshot and I could see that it had saved the snapshot at 20:39.
I opened the passage guide at 20:44 and took another snapshot. I could not see the snapshot from 20:43
I changed the layout again at 20:49 and opened the layouts menu. I could not see either the 20:43 or 20:44 layouts.
Each time I opened the Layouts menu, I could see a “Now” snapshot, but none of them were saved – apart from the one at 20:39 when I closed Logos 4
I closed Logos at 20:55
This is not how Logos used to behave... It used to save a snapshot every time I opened the Layouts menu.

I can reproduce this behaviour and your log confirms the "Now" screenshot times + the snapshot taken on Exit at 20:55. If the behaviour has changed then it seems it is being more efficient about saving the "Now" screenshots as actual snapshots; which means you may have to name more "Now" screenshots.

Thanks again Dave for your time... So what you are telling me is that the Logos 4 interface has changed and now it is not supposed to save a snapshot each time the Layouts menu is opened? There is no way that I can get Logos to save like it used to? I will be very disappointed if that is the case... I don't understand why saving the snapshots was a problem.
Naming snapshot's each time is, to be quite honest, a real nuisance!! Can I request that they go back to saving the snapshot's, or at least allowing the option to choose to have Logos save them?

I used the word "If" because I don't know anything has changed; I cannot find it in any recent Release Notes. It would be beneficial to have Logos comment on this so that we can understand the strategy, but you can always go to Uservoice with a feature request.

Thanks Dave. I have raised the issue on uservoice. I hope that someone from Logos can help - I have spent a lot of money on Logos and I love the app, but apart from your help, which I really appreciate, technical support does seem to be lacking. Hopefully they will prove me wrong!!

We're looking into the snapshot issue.
In the meantime, you may want to look at the History panel under Tools to see if that might help you.

I thought I would take a look at "layouts," and examine the issue a bit.
Was I ever surprised when I went to the bottom and noticed that my oldest "snapshot" is dated from September 2009.
Now I must spend a bit of time to consider "why" Logos would think that we might want to look back that far.
For me this is a "curiosity".........*smile*

Hi Milford,
I used the snapshot feature a lot, but I also deleted them once I had finished. I found it easy to keep under control and not time consuming at all.
Peace & joy to you too broher!

Hi Tonya,
I have not heard anything further about this and it really is hampering my use of Logos 4...
Can you give me any news?

Hi Michael,
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that previously, every time you opened the Layouts menu, it would "take a snapshot" and save it permanently in the list of unnamed layouts, even if you didn't give it a name. That is, the current layout would be shown as "Now" and whenever you opened the Layouts menu again, that "Now" snapshot would be shown earlier in the list (usually under "Today"), one screenshot for each time you had opened the Layouts menu. Is that correct?
To the best of my knowledge, the Layouts menu has never been designed to work this way; it's primarily intended to allow access to previously, explicitly saved layouts, and to explicitly create new ones. Permanently saving an unnamed new snapshot every time the menu is opened hasn't been part of any specifications I've seen for the feature.
It's possible that it did work that way in earlier versions and has changed accidentally, but (as far as I know) this wasn't a deliberate change in the design of the feature. It might help us figure out exactly what changed if you can tell us which version you upgraded from. Did you upgrade from v4.2a to 4.2b, or from an earlier version?

Are you sure Bradley? I just tried it (if I understand you). It takes a snapshot each layout menu opening; it typically dumps them fairly quickly if I don't name them. But it does provide a very recent history (which I use to recover from).

I was trying to say what you're saying: It does display the current application screenshot when you open the menu, but it doesn't keep those temporary screenshots in the list permanently. (As you said, it dumps them fairly quickly if they're not named.)
I understood the original poster to be saying that the screenshot displayed whenever he opened the Layouts menu was saved in the menu for all time, even if it wasn't named. I don't remember Logos 4 ever being deliberately designed to work that way; if it did have that behaviour, it was an unintended side-effect.

Yes, that is correct. Each Snapshot (created by clicking on the Layouts button) would have a TimeStamp and it would appear in the list. I found it very useful for going through my studies and the books that I was using... each time I was somewhere that I wanted to refer back to, I would click on the Layouts button, take the snapshot and continue studying. Later on when I was finished, I would go through and remove the snapshots that I had taken. It was very useful and I miss it a lot!!!

By design or not, I am sure that Logos did work that way... I know because I used that feature a lot! I am not 100% sure which version I upgraded from, but I always make sure that Logos is up to date, so I would be confident to say that it was from the previous version, 4.2a.
Thank you again for your help!!

Re. THIS post ......
I've just spent about 20 minutes studying the snapshot function of L4, and if what we have is "an unintended side-effect," please let me state that it is definitely a side-effect that could be very beneficial to the user. It's not likely that I will need to go back to 2009 and 2010; however, those snapshots are still on my list and I like that very much. Just in case I need to go back. I found it very pleasant to spend a few minutes reviewing some of my studies and marvelling at "where I have been"! *smile*

Milford,
Unnamed snapshots are retained for some time but I wouldn't know how long as I delete them after a month or so! But DMB claims that the current NOW snapshot used to be retained every time he accessed the Layouts menu. Whilst unnamed snapshots are retained, as you observe, I can't be sure that the 4:47 pm NOW snapshot will be retained unless I give it a name.

Thanks for your post.... I understand what you are saying, and I think I'm going to use the delete feature to clean up my layout list just a wee bit............
I just found it fascinating to be able to briefly and nostalgically "review" what I had done almost two years ago and hope Logos keeps this feature....

Hi Milford,
I found that feature very very useful, not just for nostalgic reasons, but it really helped me keep track of my studies.
I also hope that Logos keeps that feature. I am sure that it was only a short piece of code that has stopped it from working and it shouldn't be any problem to bring it back. I am just waiting to hear from Logos that they will reinstate that feature.
Blessings to you,
Michael
