Ten Helpful Tips for Beta Testers

Member Posts: 1,490 ✭✭✭

If you've decided to install the public beta version of Logos Bible Software after reading the Important Beta Testing Information/Warnings thread, there are a few things you should know as you get started.

1.  Turn on Diagnostic Logging permanently.  Diagnostic logs are often the key to solving an issue, and without them we may not be able to help you.

2.  Collect your logs immediately after discovering an issue.  Log files are overwritten once new information is available (except for the error logs, which are composite files), so it is important to move or rename the log files that contain the relevant information before reopening the program or performing any troubleshooting steps.

3.  Report all issues on the Logos Desktop Beta forum.  Customer Support is not able to provide support for beta issues.  However, if you can reproduce the issue in a stable build as well, please feel free to call or email Customer Support for assistance.

4.  Use the subject line of your forum post to give a brief description of the issue and the build number being used.  This is also a good place to indicate whether the issue occurred while using a Mac or Windows machine.  'Logos crashes' is less useful than '4.6 B4: Clicking info pane icon in resource panel causes crash on Windows 7'.

5.  For crashes/hangs/behavior issues please provide reproduction steps.  Use a list format rather than prose.  If you don't know what caused the app to crash/hang give the best description you can of what you were doing at the time.

6.  For UI issues include screenshots or screencasts.  There are many free utilities  available for creating screenshots/casts.

7.  Include log files.  For UI issues they may not be necessary; but if you are unsure, please err on the side of including them rather than not.

8.  POST your logs, don't PASTE your logs.  Use the paperclip icon to attach your log files to your post.  Please do not copy and paste the log contents into the post itself.  A web browser is not well suited for viewing logs.

9.  It is good practice to periodically empty your log folder to remove irrelevant files.

10.  To continue receiving beta updates, in addition to using the install link for the beta version of the Logos 4 application, you should type the following command into the Command box of your program:
Set update channel to beta

Following these tips and the general Forum Guidelines will ensure a more pleasant beta experience for everyone.
