With the news that the PB tool is going to be free I've begun playing more with larger books. Last night I learned some lessons while converting CCEL's Summa Theologica to PB.

1) When dealing with Large Word Documents let the resource repagenate completely before starting to work with it.

2) Give everything a style and minimize the number of styles used. It's a lot easier to simply modify a style then to go line-by-line through the document.

3) Don't double space. This resulted in way too much space between paragraphs when I brought it into Logos. Instead Single space everything and apply different paragraph spacings to your various styles.

So far I've worked on two larger resources, both from CCEL; Summa Theologica-Thomas Aquinas and Exposition of Scripture: 2 Cor, Gal, Phil, Col, Thess, 1 Tim.-MacLaren. Below is a screen shot of what they look like in L4. I highly doubt Summa is at the Logos version's quality. There are many errors in it and I do not know how many of them are a result of my formatting procedures and which are inherent in the CCEL version.

What PBs are you working on?

Wuff, wuff. I never built anything in L3, so the learning curve is going to be greater for me. I will start with documents that I want in Logos from  our Biblical Research Insitute website, and then proceed from there.

Working on a couple of titles, but source is a mess may have to abandon..but am looking at it from a different angle... have written a program to strip the source and rejoin all the paragraphs, strip the bad characters out of the text, may have found a way to export it direct to docx

its looking a bit better am gonna add milestones.in the text file, at least it will hopefully by end of night.. hopefullly then I can pull it into Word for final finishing..

but I need to run some tests as I may have found a way of writing the text out as a docx.. but need to run a lot more tests

Bibles, Bibles, Bibles... Smile

I am still waiting to see the possibility to assign the "BibleText"  Search Field tag to the Biblical text to get Copy Bible Verses or Bible Search working properly with the PB Bibles.

It used to be a "Known Issue" in the former Beta Release Notes but now in the Logos 4.3 RC1 "Known Issues" it is absent. I just posted a separate thread on this issue:  http://community.logos.com/forums/t/36274.aspx

Peace to my Forum Brothers and Sisters!                *smile*

I've made two books successfully.  Worked well.

What did not work is my Table of Contents....      Although I've used Word since Word 6, I've never before tackled a table of contents....

Would anyone be willing to post a .docx file with a working table of contents that I could learn from  ----    perhaps emulate ???

It would most certainly speed up my "learning curve"!

BTW, so far (about 15 hours) my Personal Books have NOT synched to my backup computer....

                              Will they ever????

I have footnotes in a document that are not linked. I have used bookmarks, but when they compile, they do not work. How do you create footnotes in a PBB? The footnote does not link to another book. I need to master the basics first.

I'm working on  a variety of catechisms that aren't available in Logos - primarily from the Reformed tradition but covering a variety of groups along with some chart sermons and Nestorian and Coptic materials.

I am putting all the papers I write for college in one of my books. My other books are basically going to be my own commentaries. And not sure how the SFA is going to work, but if all else fails I will use my PBB for my sermons.

Just to be clear you do realize that generating a table of contents in Word is not necessary for creating a Logos resource with a table of contents. In your document go to the line you want in your Logos Table of Contents (e.g. a Chapter Title). Place the cursor anywhere on that line. Now give that line the style "Heading 1." How you do this will depend on the version of Word you are using. If you are using 2007 or 2010 click on the "Home" tab. On the ribbon along the top there will be a section called "styles." One of the styles will be "Heading 1" Click on it and it will give whatever your cursor is on that style. If you want to mark something as a subheading give it the style "Heading 2." If you don't like the formating of that style right click on the "heading 1" box on the ribbon and select "modify style." Play around with things there a bit and you'll see what happens.

You can add a table of contents to the beginning of your document if you want to. It will take everything you've labeled as "heading 1" and "Heading 2" and use those styles to complete the table of contents. After stylizing your document with your headings go to the beginning of the document. Select the "references" tab and then "Table of contents". Select the style you want and it will generate your table for you.

Once again, thanks, Dominic, for looking at this matter....                     Nothing has synced to machine 2 ....

However, it may be just purely academic only for me at this point because my old (I mean OLD!) and trusty (at least up until today!) seems to have met its maker.    Made some fan noise, then turned off.  Tomorrow I will remove the back and take a peek, but am not hopeful!

I just want to give a quick "heads up" about the PBB distribution terms. While you'll be able to build whatever you want with PBB, distribution will be supported via our Logos online systems. (Both from your personal page as well as from a central bookstore.)

The bookstore will make it easy to share content with others, and will offer the same cloud-based downloading, syncing, multi-computer use, etc. that Logos-created books support.

For this reason, though, Logos is going to have some content restrictions on the bookstore -- we aren't looking to create an editing tool, for example, that lets people create lower-quality and lower-price versions of public domain content we sell in high-quality editions, and then use our systems, servers, etc. to distribute them.

The policies and procedures aren't done, and we're still thinking through all the issues. But I want to point out early-on that the goal of PBB is to support "personal" use. This means you can do whatever you want for yourself, but if you want to use our systems to share/distribute the content, we'll be offering support for sharing your "personal" content, not for going into competition with Logos on public domain (or licensed non-PD) content.

Thank you Bob for the information. Just one question: will Logos provide syncing between all the platforms (PC, MAC, iPhone, iPad etc.) used by a particular user, if the book is not "public" but "personal" and in this case not visible in the Logos store?

Woah!  Will we be able to bypass Logos's distribution systems and import public domain content that DOES already exist in paid logos packages on our own?  I have been hoping to use several of my PBB resources from Logos 3 in Logos 4 but there are paid Logos versions of these resources already out there.

I guess what I'm asking is will you allow us to share books with each other in .lbxlls or .logos4 format via email or some other means or will we only be allowed to use your systems?  I understand if you don't want your bandwidth used to distribute public domain resources you already sell, as long as we have some other means of importing resources that are in the public domain.

If we aren't allowed to share resources anymore outside of Logos's control (stilltruth.com) this will be a significant departure from the spirit of the original personal book builder program.  I'd much rather have control and freedom to import and share whatever we want to like we did with Logos 3 than have the convenience of your public servers with strings attached.
