I upgraded my Office 2010 to 2013 today to discover that my Logos 4 smart tags only partially function.  Any abbreviations of books go totally unrecognised (e.g. Matt for Matthew) and the very useful "replace with passage" feature is no longer present.  Is there a smart-tags upgrade available for Office 2013 users?  Anyone having the same issues?

Hello Martin,

I apologize I don't have any direct solutions for this, but I can provide some insight. Microsoft is slowly, but steadily, depreciating the Smart Tags feature. They keep burying it deeper in the settings and will likely remove it entirely at some point.

Long-term, you may have better luck using the Copy Bible Verses tool. On Windows, you can access this with the global keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+B, whenever Logos is open. This tool was specifically designed to work with Word for exporting passages and provides a lot of extra options you can't get from Smart Tags.

Hi Mike, thanks for the quick reply.  I didn't know about "Ctrl+Alt+B".  Very helpful!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I immediately noticed this same behavior as Martin once I upgraded to Office 2013.

I'm trying to use CTRL+ALT+B as you suggest, but it seems to require many more steps. Before I would simply (1) right click a reference like Jn 3:16, (2) click Additional Actions, then (3) click Replace with Passage. Now I have to (1) select the reference, (2) CTRL+C to copy, (3) CTRL+ALT+B to bring up Copy Bible Verses, (4) CTRL+V to paste in the reference, then (5) fix the formatting of the verse that was pasted in since it seems to alter the formatting of my document (before it would just paste plain text so no re-formatting was needed).

Is there any other alternative? I use this feature with many references every single week, so it's a really big deal. Is this fixed in Logos 5 (I'm still using Logos 4)?

I'm a programmer, so if there is no plan for Logos to fix this problem, is there an API I can have access to in order to write my own tool? I see there is an old page with instructions for Logos 3: http://www.logos.com/support/windows/L3/automate_cbv, but I'm using Logos 4.

Thanks!

Bryant

We haven't updated the Smart Tag for Office 2013 yet. Now that it has been released, we will be adding Office 2013 support in the near future (hopefully in the release after 5.0b).

As per my previous reply, we plan to update the Smart Tag for Office 2013 in a forthcoming release of the software. I don't yet have a date for when that will be available.

Our existing Smart Tag is implemented by using the Logos 4 COM API, so if you are a COM programmer, you can duplicate its functionality using our public API (which is also available in Logos 5).

Thanks, Bradley, for your prompt reply. I'll be looking forward to that future release. It's only going to be available in Logos 5 I assume, not Logos 4?

Yes, I found the Logos 4 COM API page and actually implemented half of a solution yesterday. I'm going to keep working at it since it's an indispensable feature to me. Maybe if it works well, I can share with others.

I think we should be able to include an updated Smart Tag in the next versions of both Logos 4 and Logos 5.

An update to Smart Tags is now available for Office 2013 users. (This will be included in the next major release of Logos Bible Software, but I wanted to make it available for testing now for those who don't want to join the Logos 5 beta.)

To use it, download the Smart Tag for your version of Logos and place it in your Logos 4/5 System folder. This will be %localappdata%\Logos4\System for Logos 4 users, or Logos 5 users who upgraded from Logos 4, or %localappdata%\Logos5\System for brand-new Logos 5 installs. Overwrite the existing L4SmrtTg.dll file that is there. (Close all Office applications before overwriting the file, to make sure they're not holding it open.)

Download L4SmrtTg.dll for Logos 4 here, or for Logos 5 here.

Please let me know if you experience any problems with the updated Smart Tag.

Bradley just confirming, Smart Tags still do not work with Office x64 per Microsoft, or has that changed with Office 2013?

Thanks!

The Logos Smart Tag is still 32-bit only.

Do you have Office 2013 64-bit (or Office 2010 64-bit)? I've created a 64-bit version of the Smart Tag. Since I don't have Office 64-bit, it is completely untested. You can test it by downloading LSmtTg64.dll, putting it in any directory on your system, then running regsvr32 C:\Path\To\LSmtTg64.dll. It should display a dialog box saying DllRegisterServer succeeded.

Let me know if that does or doesn't work for you.

Hi Bradley, I have Office 2013 x64 on my desktop. I tried the x64 dll, and it did succeed from the regsvr32 command. However, the Logos addin does not show up when I try to activate it:

Sorry, I posted the wrong link (now fixed); here's the right one: https://s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.logos.com/LBS5/LSmtTg64.dll

Please try it again with this DLL.

OK regsvr32 succeeded, and it shows up in the right click context menu. I highlighted James 1:1 to test. Here are the results:

"Replace with Passage" - replaces with the text "James 1:1 (NAB)" (my default Bible)

Open Bible to James 1:1 - works!

Copy Bible Verses - works!

Passage Guide - works!

So it appears only Replace with Passage fails.

Is there anything else I should test?

It looks like the communication with Logos 5 is succeeding (or else it wouldn't have been able to know what your default Bible is), but something else may be going wrong. Can you check  CBV and make sure that with your currently selected style it shows text for James 1:1? Does changing the current CBV style help?

Oh my, Bradley, I am so embarrassed! It is working fine as well. I was looking at it on a big screen, I didn't realize it was at the end of the page. the James 1:1 (NAB) was the title of the Fully Formatted style of CBV, the rest of the verse was on the next page!  Embarrassed

So I would say all the context menu entries are working fine!  Nice job!   Is there anything else I should test?

Sorry to waste your time!

Glad to hear it!

It sounds like all the Smart Tag features are working as designed, so I don't think there's anything else to test. Enjoy!

Bradley,

I can't get this to work. I downloaded the last 64 bit version you posted (I'm on Office 2013 x64). I ran the regsvr command from the command line (as administrator) and it "failed to load."

Any help would be appreciated.
