@Brian: Send to Kindle?

Brian,

I thought that the new Send to Kindle functionality is available for all Vyrso resources from Publishers whose name starts with any letter from A to Y, unless the files are too big (which I assume is the case for the great resource https://vyrso.com/product/39348/holman-quicksource-guide-to-the-dead-sea-scrolls with its many pictures).

From another thread, a user is asking about https://vyrso.com/product/43819/after-acts-exploring-the-lives-and-legends-of-the-apostles (from Moody) and I see that https://vyrso.com/product/46339/voyage-with-the-vikings (from Focus on the Family) is not enabled for it, too.

Do they just require some work on your side to be made available for sending to the Kindle (don't bother too much with the Vikings then), or am I wrong in my first paragraph?

Thanks in advance for clearing this up,

Mick

Hey Mick, I'm looking into your question and will hopefully have am explanation soon. Thanks for your patience!

The other forum thread is taking a little bit of a different focus so I'll answer your question here and try to provide a clear answer to the new question arising on the other thread.

There are a couple of reasons an ebook may not be available within the Send to Kindle feature:

    1. A resource may be too large to send. Amazon enforces a strict 50 MB limit, which a book could exceed if it had a number of bible references that we pull in.
    2. The resource is not available in the “internet-offline” platform. Often times a publisher does not give us permission to push digital copies outside of our platform.
    3. In the case that the license isn’t permanent (a rented resource), we don’t support sending the resource to Kindle.
    4. The resource is newer than what can be read by Send to Kindle’s current Digital Library version.

Let me know if you need more clarity.

    Thanks for your answer.

Maybe I need another cup of coffee, but I'm struggling to understand especially #4 .

Let me rephrase the understanding I read out of/into your explanation and confirm or clarify.

    • Logos has a Digital Library (DL) on a server containing those works that are publisher-licenced for uses including to be sent to kindle (S2K) and that are smaller than 50mb in converted form - including references converted to footnotes with full biblical text (expanded size)
    • In case a user has S2K configured and has a permanent licence to use a resource contained in that DL, Send to Kindle will be available for that resource.
    • Logos rebuilds/updates this DL in some sort of process.

So, if a permanently owned resource is not restricted by the publisher and does most likely not exceed the 50mb expanded size limit, it will still be unavailable for S2K for the time until the DL is updated - which in practical consequence means the advise for newly available books is "don't panic, just wait" whereas some weeks/months later the advise is "it won't come until Lexham buys HarperCollins, live with it or help by buying another Collector's edition". Did I get that somewhat right or plain wrong?

I'm one of the engineers who works on the Send to Kindle platform. We're upgrading the service to support sending new books. However, until we finish this upgrade, new books won't be available to download. Unfortunately, I don't have a time estimate for when that will be complete. Books that already support Send to Kindle will continue to be available to download. We'll post to this thread when new resources are available to download.

Do you think it possible that the work you are doing is causing the effect noted at https://community.logos.com/forums/t/100612.aspx?

I would be surprised if this were the case but thought it worth asking[:)]

Brian, I just purchased the following resource in the hopes that I could read it on my Kindle. Can you tell me which of the provided categories it falls into? Because I have no option to send anywhere. The only option I have is to "Manage mobile devices"

I'm not sure whether Brian is willing and/or able to answer on this on a resource by resource base, but for an outside-guess you might want to carefully read the first sentence I wrote in my first post above and look again at the metadata of your book.

It's been a month since this post. Are we any closer to being able to send new documents to Kindle? I'm very keen to read the C S Lewis collection there!

We have finished upgrading Send to Kindle to be compatible with Logos 6 resources. We've added over 7,000 new resources, which are now available to be sent.

For clarification: What does this mean for new resources going forward? If a book is released in the Vyrso or Logos store next week, should it be "send to kindle" enabled from day 1 (as long as it meets the other requirements)?

Great, thanks! I've just sent Lewis' Weight of Glory, which was one I've been waiting for.

I was waiting for a book to be "send to kindle" enabled... but I have forgotten which one. [:s] [:)]

I am still having a problem with the books in the C.S Lewis Collection. Is anyone else?

There is currently an issue with books from the C.S. Lewis Collection being able to be sent. As far as I know, only resources from this collection are affected.

I am actively looking into why this is the case.

There was a resource deployment issue, which caused the C.S. Lewis Collection resources to be unavailable. I have since redeployed them, and they should now be working.

New resources may use a resource driver version that is not supported by Send to Kindle, which requires us to update Send to Kindle to be compatible. Unfortunately, this means I can't give a good answer on when resources will become available relative to when they are available in Logos.

Translation: "For technical reasons, newly published resources may not be "send to kindle" enabled until an update (of indeterminate time) can be pushed." Right?

Are new "resource driver versions" frequent?

Your translation is correct. There may be a certain amount of development time required to support new resources, however we are working on different ways to minimize this.

As far as how often new resource driver versions occur, I am not sure off the top of my head. Send to Kindle was running the version that shipped with Logos 5.2a, and we've now updated it to the version that shipped with Logos 6.0. In the future, we want to try keeping Send to Kindle up to date with Biblia, supporting all the resources that Biblia has available which match our criteria.

Adam - reading through all these posts.  Just so I am clear, the "send to kindle" feature only works with Logos 5.2a or 6, not with Logos 4.6...?

    Thanks!

Hi Joel - and welcome to the forums

Actually Send to Kindle only works for Logos 6.x - it was included in a beta release for 5.3 but that version never shipped due to the arrival of v6

As Graham indicated, this is an L6 only feature. Is there a reason (i.e. incompatible computer/OS) you haven't updated to at least the free L6 engine?

Graham - thanks for the reply and welcome.  I appreciate the quick response.

Alabama - No reason.  Actually didn't know there was a free update to the L6 engine.  Do you happen to know where I could find the link to that?

Actually didn't know there was a free update to the L6 engine.

The software is always free... You will need to pay for new resources or features which require new datasets. In this case, you will get many new features, including "send to kindle."

Do you happen to know where I could find the link to that?

See the "install" link in my signature line.
