Video Playback Not Working Through Windows Remote Desktop Client

I'm having problems with video playback when running Logos 6 through a remote desktop connection in my home.  I can hear the audio but the video is not working.

I would prefer to run these from my desktop machine remotely from my bedroom since my desktop is much more capable of running Logos 6.

Any ideas or settings suggestions to get this to work?

Video playback is very limited on virtual machines or remote connections. If you want to continue using your desktop for your studies I would recommend viewing the videos natively on the machine in your bedroom using www.biblia.com (free) or App.Logos.com (for Logos Now subscribers).

Doing this gives you a better video playback experience and the remote connection still lets you tap into the more powerful machine for searching, indexing and running guides in L6.

Thanks Josh for your explanation.  I did not realize the videos are available from the iOS app.

Are you aware of a reason the video playback is so limited?  The reason I ask is because my preferred device from my bedroom (ASUS Note 8 running Win 8.1 Desktop) causes Logos 6 to crash when I try to play the videos.  That leaves me with my iPhone 5 (too small) or my Mac Book Pro (too large).

Hopefully this will remedied before too long.

    Thanks again!

I cannot say specifically why it doesn't work but I can give a couple of possible reasons.

    1. Remote desktop is optimized to send as little data over the wire as possible (with the understanding that most users are not on the same internal network)
    2. There may be general DRM concerns about playback that caused Microsoft to turn it off when playing remotely

There may be another reason I'm not thinking of. Either way, the remote playback is turned off at the level of the playback framework (the OS level commands we're using to play video) not the software level. Unfortunately this means there's not anything we can do to enable it other than switch to a completely new framework.

The reason I ask is because my preferred device from my bedroom (ASUS Note 8 running Win 8.1 Desktop) causes Logos 6 to crash when I try to play the videos.

There was a crash (not reported until a recent beta). That happened on 32 bit installs. It's been fixed and I expect it to ship in 6.3 when it goes stable. This may resolve your issue. If not I'd love to see logs from the crashes so we can track down what's going on.

Thank you for the explanations Ryan.  I don't believe it would be 1 since I have the RD settings set to maximum bandwidth on my local network in the home.  Unfortunately it is probably 2.  DRM kills another perfectly legit scenario again. Argh.

I will look forward to crash being fixed in 6.3.  That should be a big help.

    Thank you!!

have you tried other desktop remote software?

Splashtop remote desktop personal is free on the same subnet/local lan, I use it a lot. it only has a cost when you want to connect across the Internet or want to use their add on stuff (I have never tried that other stuff)

I haven't tried that Brent.  I will give it a try.

    Hi  Ryan,

It appears that version 6.3 has fixed the video playback on my Asus Note 8 (32-bit) tablet.  Thank you Logos for fixing it!!

While I have some ideas about what may have fixed it, there wasn't actually an intentional code change to fix this. Glad it's working for you though!
