Two great resources that I used with my students when I had them do Exegesis Papers were:

New Jerome Biblical Commentary (a classic)

http://www.amazon.com/New-Jerome-Biblical-Commentary/dp/0136149340/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1444197951&sr=8-1&keywords=new+jerome

and

The New Jerome Bible Handbook (based on the Commentary, but valuable in itself)

http://www.amazon.com/Jerome-Bible-Handbook-Biblical-Commentary/dp/0814622046/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444197951&sr=8-2&keywords=new+jerome

While Verbum has an incredible amount of commentaries, I would love to see these added!

Agreed! They have been asked for many times sadly.

The Jerome Biblical Commentary was available in the L2 days, which is how I got it (I found an old L2 library about 2 years ago on ebay).  I don't think it was ever available in L3 or later releases.  It must be a licensing issue.

I have the Jerome Biblical Commentary too from the old days, but this is different - The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is a very substantial rewrite and I am pretty sure without looking that it's a new editorial team.I have it in hard copy and it's much different.

Thanks for all the feedback - hopefully if it is a rights issue that can be something overcome.  I am glad others are interested in this as well!

The Handbook I have found as a great  to use as a nice overview of the "literal sense" of the book, as well as a nice outline of the book.  Hopefully both might be added soon!

This may be off-topic, but how does that work buying a used version of a previous iteration of Logos? There are some titles like the Jerome Biblical Commentary that I'd like to have and am wondering if that would be a good way to obtain it.

I knew I had asked about this - Louis St. Hilaire, who is still around, sent me this in 2011, so it does sound like rights issues. But maybe the publisher is more savvy about the benefit of the digital world now almost 5 years later!

Louis St. Hilaire sent you the following message:

    ----------------------------------
    Subject:RE: New Jerome Biblical Commentary

    Hi Don,

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is high on our list of Catholic resources we would like to have, but we haven't been able to secure rights from the publisher.

I hope that changes (hey, we finally got the Vatican II documents!), but I can't make any promises.

    This thread explains my situation:

I don't think that it is possible to sync from L3 any longer, so you would need to send the license file to Logos to unlock the books for you.  As far as getting an old version, you just have to keep an eye out on ebay or the like.

I'd just like to keep this thread bumped up a bit.  Wondering whether it would help for it to go to Suggestions?  I am particularly interested in the New Jerome Biblical Commentary.

The NJBC is on the Book Suggestions UserVoice.

If you can find a new (sealed) of an older version that has the license code in it, they will unlock the books for you.  I just found the Logos 2 Catholic on EBay that had the Jerome Biblical Commentary (old version).  It is new/sealed.

If it is not new, then they have to do a license transfer, so they need permission of the old license holder to transfer it to your account.

I realize the Prentice Hall in the past has been objectionable to having their book in Logos format but I have to believe saner heads are there now (when I say that I mean that Digital copies are just as important if not more so than paper copies in 2016, indeed I have 2nd edition but will not even think of getting the 3rd edition till it can be purchased in an electronic format).

I have this version it was dramatically written under Raymond Brown's editor leadership, like about 80% rewritten. The two versions look nothing alike.

I would agree but still find the 1968 Jerome Biblical Commentary valuable.

Yep, I knew it was the older version - I still see it as a valuable resource to have (I have the hardcover version of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary).

Just a bit of an update, for those who think they might want the old version and looking to get it on eBay, there are a few more steps involved in getting it "unlocked" on the newer versions of Logos/Verbum.

    1) The Serial Number/Registration code is not in the actual box - you have to install the software first.  Which means you need to have, or have access to, a machine running windows 95 or XP - fortunately, our school had a laptop that we could run in XP mode on and it worked.

    2) Once installed, you then need to follow these steps to extract the LSB File: https://www.logos.com/about-lls  and send that into Logos Customer Care.  They will use that to then unlock the books in that edition.

I just wanted to make sure people were aware of this as I had assumed that the code would be in the box with the discs - I wasn't anticipating needing to install it, and was fortunate (after panicking that I wasted a bunch of $$) that I could find a machine to have it installed on.

Thanks for sharing. I've never been able to find it on eBay when I've looked. It would be nice to get the old Jerome.

It took me many years scouring the net to locate my copy. Eventually I found an unopened copy for sale from a small catholic book store in the midwest... I am not sure if they had just recently gone online or what but I was very happy after i think a near 5 year search for it.

I must have just gotten lucky - there was one on eBay for $29 last week.  Shipping was $7.95.  It arrived yesterday and now have it installed.

I actually was able to get 3 new (to me) resources out of it:

    • Jerome Biblical Commentary (Old Edition)
    • New Jerusalem Bible Reader's Edition (I have the one with notes on prepub)
    • NAB (old edition)

While they are all older editions/resources, I still think they are valuable to have as I do like to compare what the "revised" and updated ones change.  It is also valuable since you can't get the older resources on Verbum/Logos any more.

You might want to add it as a watchlist on eBay so you get notified when one gets listed :)

I wonder what books are included in that Catholic Scholars Pack - that is different packaging than the Logos 2 Catholic Edition.

I'll have to figure out how to do that. I don't use eBay that much, so I'm not familiar with the helpful tools. Getting the Jerome Biblical Commentary and the NAB would be nice.

It's actually pretty easy to  "follow a search"/create a watchlist.  Make sure you are logged into eBay, then do a search: Logos 2.0 Catholic and then you will see the search results.  There is a link at the top to "Follow this Search".  If you click it, it will set up notifications when things are posted that matches that search.  For things that I have really been looking for, I tried using a couple different search combinations and followed them: "Logos Catholic", "Logos 2.0", etc.

That way, in case something is listed that fits one but not the other, you will still be notified.

    I hope this helps!

I fully agree with you there Chris! I would even like to see "The Jerome Biblical Commentary" as part of a Verbum package. The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is about 60% new material. There is still a wealth of good useful material in the original volume. For my money the New Jerome is the best single volume commentary available irrespective of theological tradition. The references from commentary on to precise numbered paragraphs in the theological and other sections make it a fabulously easy and "full" resource to use for a single volume work. In the Verbum/Logos system of links at a click it would be absolute dynamite and a joy to use.

    Please Verbum publish it.

Christmas Ideas! Catholic Bible Software by Logos

by JESSERAY on DECEMBER 9, 2011

Most of you already know that I use Logos Bible Study software every day! There is nothing to compare with it. I have used it since 1990, never believing it would be as user friendly and powerful as it is today.

And now they have three new products worthy of the name “Catholic.”

There are three packages, each loaded with Catholic Bibles, resources — including the Vatican Councils, Fathers of the Church, commentaries and much more.

Catholic Foundations is the most affordable and the Scholar’s pack is for serious study. Scripture Study is middle of the road and geared toward serious Catholic Bible Study.

Check them out by going to http://www.Logos.com/SteveRay

I am thinking there might be a rights issue with the Old Jerome Commentary - as that is also what seems to be the issue with the New Jerome Biblical Commentary (from earlier posts).  However, you can get the Old Jerome Commentary if you can find the "Logos 2 Catholic" program on eBay (I was able to snag a new, sealed, copy for about $30), you can install it, get the license code, and Faithlife will apply it to your account and you will have the Old Jerome Commentary. It also includes the original NAB bible and a couple other resources which I was thrilled to have since they are no longer available on Logos (the other included resources are still available, but those two resources made the $30 well worth it in my mind!).

Be forewarned, the "Logos 2 Catholic" program I got was on disk and ran on Windows XP, so it was a little tricky getting it installed on the newer computers to get the license code, but it was worth the effort!

Hi Chris, it's not necessary to install old Logos software to have the resources added to your account. Simply call or email Logos with the installation code and they'll add the resources for you. I have done this several times and it has always been a smooth process.
