This book pretty much rips off the excellent 1942 British film "Went the day well", which rather alarmingly stars Thora Hird as a coquette.

To be honest both are very good, and you cannot beat Larry Hagman.
The beauty of "Went the day well" is that it was made in 1942 when invasion was still a real danger and it actually keeps the propoganda in check, which was a real accomplishment and is something that I do think Britain did better then America generally did on this occasion.
I believe that it also used real troops for the battle scenes, which reminds me of the excellent "A Canterbury Tale" that also used a real GI in a main role and likewise highlights a nostalgia for Britishness but as this was made in 1944 when the threat of invasion had receded the message is very different.
It will also interest anyone British that "Went the day well" was filmed in the church used in the execrable "Vicar of Dibly".
