WORDsearch: New Computer Installation Guide

Install WORDsearch (12) for the first time on a new machine.

On your old machine:

Open File Explorer and copy all these directories to a thumb drive.

Find where you installed WORDsearch, the default directory is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Wordsearch 12\

Also copy the information in these directories to your thumb drive:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12\

C:\Users\username\OneDrive\Documents\WORDsearch\

NOTE: be sure to name the directories by the right name  so you can copy them to the right “new” directory.

On your old machine:

Start WORDsearch and go to: WORDsearch Options\Backup

Save your Backup to the thumb drive.

On your new computer:

Copy/paste all of the above directories to the same directories on your new computer.

NOTE: (do this last)

On your new machine:

Start WORDsearch and go to:

WORDsearch Options\Restore (select the Backup directory on the thumb drive).

Last: Go to WORDsearch Desktops and select the desktop of your choice.

Everything should work like it did on your old machine.

I installed Wordsearch on a new computer and after 30 days it's asking for me to login.  I can't seem to bypass this.  I've deleted and reinstalled and it still goes straight to sign in.  I've tried the above steps and that doesn't help either.

    Please help me,

    Thanks

If you have a copy of ws10setup.exe you can try to re-install Wordsearch 10 since it did not require a login. However, some newer books may not be recognized properly.

you have an old install, copy C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12 and C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch\Global Data\LocalLogins.db3

    If you don't, try this:

The login info is stored in C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch\Global Data\LocalLogins.db3

The file can be viewed/edited with sqlitebrowser.org

Fill in the user ID with a 5 digit number 12345

Add user@email.com in the email fields

Folder name was my name as firstlast

Also add the USER ID as ActiveUserID=12345  in C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12

    That worked for me.

Bite, or at least start chewing, the bullet. Install Logos and play with it while you have time to learn the program. Wordsearch will stop working one day and you might like to be ready for that happening.

Is there a particular reason that you have declined the Logos offer so far?

    Hi Mike
I am in my seventies, and have had WS since my first computer in 1997. Using it was always very simple. And I use it for hours every day.

With Logos everything is very difficult and complicated--from comparing verses in different translations, to even copying a verse (it is hard to select verses at once, and then I have to format the verse after I paste it, etc.)

I am getting a new computer tomorrow, and need Wordsearch for my ministry of editing choice puritan books into modern English.

    By His grace,
    Jeff

It sounds like you are both unfamiliar with Logos and that the ways you have found to do things are not the easiest ways to do it. Please keeping coming to the forums to ask questions - neither formats of copied verse nor comparing verses should be difficult once you have them set up as you like.

I too am in my seventies and I know that there are people running countries in their 70's some even running fairly big countries. So I don't count that as relevant.

Have you watched the short videos on how to use Logos in on the support pages.?

If you find any operation difficult or complex please ask about it either in the Desktop or General forums - answers from experienced users are usually quick and specific.

i have followed all these steps to move WordSearch from my old computer to my new computer. Sadly I am not able to open WordSearch on my new computer. I get the error message below. The message below originally said "file access denied" and then I clicked on details. Other times I've gotten the message "directory cannot be created." I am an editor and use WordSearch every day. Logos is powerful but too powerful for what I need - a simple way to add Bible versions to compare, a copy procedure that includes the verse, and the wonderful search WordSearch had that let me choose the Bibles I wanted to search and then search for a keyword or phrase.

WordSearch still works on my old Windows 10 computer. My new computer has Windows 11. PLEASE HELP!

A tech took control of my computer and couldn't find an answer. He did notice that there was no "installer" file but it appears I copied and pasted everything exactly from my old computer and it wasn't there. Again, PLEASE HELP!

    Reinstalling W/S

Leslie Walper | Forum Activity | Posted: Sun Nov 28, 2021 10:10 AM

I was having some operating system issues and decided to reset my Win10 OS. In the process I also switched to a new SSD drive. I have installed W/S 10 but have no access to the book libraries I was using on the old drive. Is there any way to retrieve the book libraries from the old hard drive? I can still read the data on the old drive, that's no problem, but where are the library repositories located on the drive and can they be retrieved/reinstalled on my new drive?

Leslie Walper | Forum Activity | Replied: Mon Nov 29, 2021 2:11 PM

So, I have located the book repositories and have reinstalled/indexed, and whatever W/S wants to do with the files, but the program wants to be "registered" and I suppose, that may be a problem since there is no longer any access to the online W/S user database. It's no doubt just a setting in the windows registry -- changing a 0 to a 1 someplace. Can anyone help me with this?

I looked at my files, and it may be this. I had one Windows profile with WORDsearch logged in, and one without. The ActiveUserID was blank on the one not logged in.

    C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12\Wordsearch 12.ini

    Reinstalling Wordsearch to another PC.

If anyone needs help reinstalling Wordsearch on another PC...I fumbled my way through it but have figured out a way to do it. Doing this there's no need to log in with the software as it's no longer supported so maybe this will help.

I have Wordsearch on my laptop and have switched to another laptop. I have Logos installed on the new laptop but Logos feels so clunky to me. So, I had the Wordsearch install file in my download folder. I installed it but then the challenge became it couldn't register Wordsearch  as it is no longer supported. But neither were my books installed. So I did a little reading online and came across something that got me to think about where the library of books are installed within the Wordsearch folders. There's a few Wordsearch folders in different locations on the "C" drive. I finally found the library folder and copied the content of that folder from my original pc to the destination pc. The library is installed in a a hidden folder.

Go to the "C" drive and  click the view tab at the top to make all hidden folders viewable. There will be a folder called "Program Data." In the program data folder there is a Wordsearch folder. In this folder there's two folders you'll need to copy the contents of and paste them into the destinations pc. I had to copy contents of the folders called "Global Data" and "Library." Once inside each of these folders I copied all the files within those folders to the same folders in the destination pc.

Once I did that I could see the books in my library but didn't have the permissions needed to see and use these books. In Wordsearch there's a tab called "Tools" and that brings up a window that says "Manage Library" and "My Library List." At first, I only copied the contents in the "Library" folder and my books were there but they were still locked and I couldn't use them. So, I thought well, what it I copy the contents of  the "Global Data" folder and see what happens. Then I restated my Wordsearch program after that and voila....my books were all there and I could open them.

Hope this doesn't sound too complicated but I'll try to give a description of what I did. I hope it will work for you as it did for me.

The location of the Program Data folder is C: > Program Data > Wordsearch > then you'll find the Global Data and Library folders. Once inside the folder you can click on one of them and hit the <ctrl> key and the the letter "A" key at the same time and it will highlight all the files. Right click to copy those files onto a thumb drive or and external drive to paste them into the same folder destination on the new pc.

This may sound confusing as I'm trying to type fast and finish my lunch break at work. Hope this a help.

    Allen

    Welcome

Out of the box = No because Apple's operating system is an open source BSD variant (Darwin), which does not have a C: drive.

    Options on macOS are:

    • Running a Windows virtual machine: e.g. Parallels, Virtual Box, VMware
    • Configuring WINE on macOS
    • Using remote desktop on macOS to use Wordsearch on a Windows computer

    Greeting,

In addition to the advise above, if you are purchasing a Laptop with an M1 chip, which is highly recommended so your Mac is not obsolete out of the box, then I know of no way to install WS on the Mac unless you can find an emulator that works with a non-intel chip.

Keep smiling, I think, has answered your question.

Installing logos via an emulator is illogical. Emulators are notoriously processor and memory hogs and will eat up resources. Wordsearch really has no future and even if you go to all the trouble of getting it to work you will find yourself back to square one relatively soon.

In my opinion, unless you are a person of absolute leisure and little purpose, your time would be better spent getting to grips with Logos. That course of action would likely be easier on your pocket as well.

Intego.com has a website that mentions how to roll a Windows 11 VM on an Apple Silicon Mac if you need to, but since it’s not officially supported, and performance in VMs isn’t great, I recommend against it.

I also tried Wordsearch 12 on WINE/CrossOver once, and with the exception of the official Mac version that Lifeway put out (which no longer runs on modern Macs), it was a total mess.

My recommendation would be to move onto Logos if possible. I’ve been told Logos runs great on Apple Silicon using Rosetta, and eventually I’m sure Logos will port to being a native Apple Silicon app when development resources seem feasible to do so, and it’s going to be better supported on modern Macs long-term. Once I went back to a Mac as my daily driver, I tried Wordsearch on a Windows VM, but ended up tossing it and just running Logos (plus other supported Bible software apps). I’ve decided it’s time to let legacy go and move forward.

I copied the Program Files and ProgramData folders in their entirety (with Global Data) and still I just get red ? by each book. The WS Read.me doc that addresses this says nothing about how to use the reinstall key. And when I did a backup from the other computer and tried to restore, it said there was no backup file.

Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks.

John Simpson | Forum Activity | Replied: Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:41 AM

The red ? means the book files are missing from the library folder. The files can no longer be downloaded from the Wordsearch servers.

On your old PC, the book files were usually in C:\ProgramData\Library

Rick Wade | Forum Activity | Replied: Mon Sep 26, 2022 2:16 PM

So you copied the contents of Global Data twice? After my setup, there is a Global Data older under ProgramData but there is no Library folder. That is under Program Files.

Mine was in Program Data, but the location could be changed, so it might have been somewhere else on your PC.

I know your post is pretty old, but wondering if you have an additional ideas related to the need to register after a new install?

I have been able to reinstall Wordsearch 12 on a new laptop and used a backup from the older laptop that has a functioning Wordsearch. I have compared the Wordsearch12.ini, line by line and matched the characters from the older ini to the new one including matching the ActiveUserID.

However, my challenge is that when I open Wordsearch it is still requiring me to register, which we all know is not possible. "(30 days remaining to register) Sign in".  Any idea where I need to go to change the data related to registration???

John Simpson | Forum Activity | Replied: Sun Oct 2, 2022 11:29 AM

It looks like the data associated with the ActiveUserID is stored in

    C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch\Global Data\LocalLogins.db3

    Have you restored that?

Charlie Ferrell | Forum Activity | Replied: Wed Oct 26, 2022 8:01 AM

WS can be installed on a new computer if you have a working install on another computer. You will need a WS set-up file and the data folder from the existing WS install.

found in. C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch ... (Windows File Explorer) This is the folder where all of your book data is stored. After running the WS setup file, just delete that folder in the fresh install and copy that folder from the already working install in there. I don't think this is necessary, but I also copied the WORDsearch folder in the program files directory form the old install as well after deleting it out. Everything works fine except for one feature. All of my books show up in the Library view and can be opened from there. When you go to the study view, the unlock feature in the upper left corner doesn't work, so books cannot be opened from the study view. But they all can be opened, like I said from the Library view. My fresh install on my new laptop, 2/18/22, using this method is working perfectly. GOOD Luck! And God Bless! ........... Join our WORDsearch Bible Software Users group on FB!

    Pastor Allen Wayne,

Thank you for posting how you got WordSearch functioning on another computer. I followed your instructions AFTER having only first copied the Library folder to my other computer. When I copied the Global Data folder, things started up with critical locked books UNLOCKED! I was particularly interested in my interlinear bibles.

Hello, My name is Tommy Kornegay and I wondered if you were able to copy word search bible? I have version 12 and had been

with Word Search a very long time. I am now going on Age 80. Why did Logos not give us the ability to Copy to begin with???

At my age now, the learning curve is terrible and the Cost of upgrading to the top tier is out landest at best which I cannot afford.

Seems to me it all comes back to the money? I spent thousands of dollars on my library and so far my desk top is still running

and I post my spiritual posting to my Sunday School class everyday. I spent 2 to 3 hours everyday in God's Word and yet, when

my desk top fails, I loose. Logos should go to their knees and pray.! Help us older generation to bring new younger people into

the word of God. I should not have to pay thousands  to Logos for their top tier upgrade, period.

Any help would be appreciated, thank

    YBIC

    Hi Tom

There is a guy going on 80 who is hoping to run America - don't sell yourself short.

Word Search was going out of business when they were taken over by Logos. Logos have made virtually all of the resources available in the Word Search program available to the users in their Bible Study Programme.

Depending on the level of user the one was in Word Search is the level at which one was transitioned into Logos.

So one has all one's resources and a comparable set of features in a new programme for free.

There is no need for most folk to aspire to the top level of Logos resources and I doubt that that would be necessary for Sunday School daily post.

Might I suggest that you start by opening the program - clicking on Guides/Workflows and selecting Passage Guide. Enter the passage you are interested in and feel your way from there. Make full use of the video tutorials and only try and learn how to do the thing you actual need to do.

Come back to the Desktop forum with any questions - help is usually available there in a very short time.

Or you can wallow in self pity - you choose.

Logos is an expensive venture, though it has a lot included.  I agree wit other WS users - WORDsearch much more user friend.  And nothing Logos has that competes with the Zipscript program.  I had to go back to WS8 since I had the disk.  I have Logos, but if I can figure out how to get WS10 installed on my new computer, I will.  Hindsight, I wish Wordsearch had given us opportunity to get it on a disk before they turned it over to Logos.

    Hi Lovell

If you have particular questions please post on either the 'General' or 'Desktop' forums'. On those forums there are users who are quick to respond to questions, often within minutes and. who are keen to help.

If you do post please use a descriptive title and be sure to state your OS and be sure that Logos is up to date.

Honestly, Logos is absolutely terrible compared to Wordsearch. It's as if Logos decided to make a worse piece of software. The GUI and functionality have gone backwards 10 steps. Really is sad.

Welcome to the forums. It sounds like you are having trouble finding the functions in Logos - it is much more powerful than WordSearch. It does have a steep learning curve but recent developments show that the programmers are trying to make Logos more inviting to the new user.  When you wish to learn Logos, come here to ask lots of questions and get help. At this time we have former Accordance users peppering us with questions which will show you we are responsive.

I rather just have a wordsearch 12 download available even if you do not officially support it. The Logos GUI wastes so much space on screen and everything takes about 5 extra steps on Logos.

    Greetings Adeiza

I rather just have a wordsearch 12 download available

There are Facebook groups that will help you keep Wordsearh running for as long as your hardware will support it. Why not give them a visit?

even if you do not officially support it.

You may misunderstand the way these forums work. They are mostly frequented by other Logos users here to help folk get to grips with Logos Software and resources. Sometimes staff from Logos drop in but they are most unlikely to not your comments. Some of the volunteers here have migrated from Wordsearch and will have sympathy with your frustration but, they too, will be focused on helping folk make the best of Logos rather than wallowing in a failed operation.

The Logos GUI wastes so much space on screen and everything takes about 5 extra steps on Logos.

Please visit the Desktop forum if you have problems with the software. The response time there is remarkably swift and folk will be keen to get you working efficiently with Logos. The General forum is for issues with content, resources etc. Again this will be populated by folk who are looking forward and keen to assist with the Logos software.

You may even find some ex-Wordsearch folk who will admit that Logos isn't as bad as it first seemed.

I have Word Search Bible, version 12 and it still runs. No matter what Logon says, they cannot compare to what I have and it is still running great.

Logos wants over $1500 dollars for their top version. At age 80, I will not spend that kind of money. It is sad and Logos will not give us the ability to

copy, which they should have from the get go.  I lose my 9 year old Desk Top, I lose Word Search and all  the good I have done over the last 15

years of my posting will disappear and they just do not care. Period. It's all about the money.

I understand but they do provide a free version. Is there specific functionality you would find useful?

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean here - what were you hoping to be able to copy?

At my age, I would want to copy the entire Word Search Bible program. I paid  and have a very large program.

I have Word Search for a very long time, back to 8, 9 and 10. I have a very old laptop and still has 9 and 10

if my desk top dies on me. I pray that those two will work for me one day. I have posted for over 15 years and

I believe God has honored this effort.  In my opinion, Logos cannot compete with Word Search 12.

When Logos gave Wordsearch users a way forward to continue to use the resources they had purchased it, rather reasonably, did not include a commitment to run two independent programs side by side. I rather think that if this had been a requirement then it would have scotched the deal.

if there are particular things you are frustrated by please start a new thread and we will do our best to help out.

Wordsearch 10.6 install file may be found here. https://wordsearch-basic.freedownloadscenter.com/windows/

Thanks for everyone's help!   I did not want to lose my purchased books and the ease of use with WordSearch.

Actually now that I have WS 11 installed on my laptop, it opens but with none of my books showing.   I cannot change the Library book location OR the Documents location because WS says I must have Admin rights, which of course I have already.  Anyone else run into a problem with WS saying you don't have Admin rights when you really do?
