Is the Smart Tag function working in Windows 7 64-bit with Office 2010 64-bit? Anyone doing that?

Office 64-bit is not supported. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681792.aspx, "If users in your organization depend on existing extensions to Office, such as ActiveX controls, third-party add-ins, in-house solutions built on previous versions of Office, or 32-bit versions of programs that interface directly with Office, we recommend that you install 32-bit Office 2010 (the default installation) on computers that are running both 32-bit and 64-bit supported Windows operating systems."
There's not a good reason to install 64-bit Office unless you're using a spreadsheet or database larger than 2GB.

I have not tested with UAC turned off
Hi Bradley,
I've been running with UAC OFF since nearly day 1 with Vista.... I'm also running a router firewall, a personal firewall with outbound control, anti-virus that updates multi times a week (sometimes even multi times in a day), & also anti-malware protection. I don't plan on turning UAC back on, though I, too, don't recommend that casual users turn it off.
But I'll try turning it on to see if that corrects the problem.
Grace & Peace,
Bill

From my testing, it doesn't matter whether UAC is on or off: in both cases, the smart tag will work only if both Logos 4 and Word are launched normally. If either is set to "Run as administrator", the smart tag will not work (due to enhanced security in the OS). (The only difference between the two UAC settings is whether you not you get prompted to confirm that you want to run the program as an administrator.)

With UAC on, I now have to give it permission to launch L4. [:@]
I checked properties on my quicklaunch icon to start L4. It was starting it as administrator... if I remember right, many of us did that to overcome an earlier issue with touchpad scrolling. Anyway, I've unchecked it. Restarted L4. Restarted Word with the standard quicklaunch icon (without admin; it's grayed out & can't be picked).
Still no luck. When I recheck smart tags in the document with several scripture references, there's no change in the behavior. Not working. I'll be back after the reboot from turning UAC back off.
Here's the new log file:

I'm back... no change... Even after another reboot, every reference triggers this error in the logfile:
ERROR: Can't access Logos 4 Bible reference recognizer; ignoring this text.
Thanks for your help... More suggestions? By the way, how would we know if we were running 64 bit Office? (I don't think I am but wanted to double check...) If the indication is which program files directory it's installed in, then mine's in Program Files (x86), not Program Files. I think that means it's 32 bit...

If you were running 64-bit Office, you wouldn't even get the logfile (because it's technically impossible for a 64-bit program to load the 32-bit smart tag DLL).
I have no suggestions at this point, as I'm unable to reproduce the problem here: when I ensure that both Logos 4 and Word are not running elevated, everything works as expected. It's a long-shot, but it might help to run the "/register" command as described at http://wiki.logos.com/Hyperlinks to ensure that all the registry keys are set correctly. Make sure to do this from a regular, non-elevated command prompt. (The primary registry keys for the smart tag must be correct, or else it wouldn't appear in the Word options dialog, and wouldn't create a log file. However, perhaps the registry keys for inter-process communication are not set correctly.)

The ONLY user I have is an administrator. Do I have to do anything different than Start | Run?
I tried it anyway... it said it had registered L4 successfully...
Same error in the Logfile, attached.
0121.SmartTag.logI'm also attaching my test file, in case there's anything unusual in its settings.
7080.Smart Tags.docWhat now? Other Smart Tags (including L3) will work. Everything else on my system appears to be working.

It might be worthwhile as a few permissions would be affected with running elevated in your current installation.
Ensure UAC is on and run everything normally by just double-clicking shortcuts or links. For a quick install you can try Method 3 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers (I don't recommend the other Methods in this case).

I was having the same problem as Bill S....I turned off "Run As Administrator" for the logos executable and SmartTags now work as advertised.
Thanks for the help.

I've been running with UAC off from nearly Day 1 as well, because it was driving me bonkers. I too don't recommend to others running with it off either, but I'm very protected with other means as Bill is.

Yes, I recall that used to happen for me all the time and it might have been one of the reasons I switched UAC off. I think I had first tried enabling "run as administrator" on the Logos icon to avoid the UAC prompt, and then ran into other problems or was cautioned that Logos doesn't recommend doing that. Anyway, I would not want to re-enable UAC right now, especially now that I hear that it doesn't fix the SmartTags problem.
Bradley, any chance you or someone else from Logos could connect remotely to either Bill's or my machine to investigate why it isn't working for us? I'm not all that interested in getting it working for me (since I was never a SmartTags user anyway), but I want to get to the bottom of this so I can help other forum users who encounter this problem.

Hi Dave,
I did... then I found out I couldn't set many of my apps to be run by all users, & I deleted the account.
Maybe I'll set it up again just to run this test, if we can't interest someone in logging in remotely.
I'll be home all day & left contact info on Melissa's profile...

choosing "Run as administrator" for either Logos 4
Hi Bradley,
After a reboot, I double checked my L4 shortcut & discovered that "Run as administrator" was still checked on Logos. (I'd turned it off earlier... don't remember turning it back on, but I've made a lot of changes trying to debug.)
I've unchecked it. Rebooted again. Triple checked that it's still unchecked. But still no joy.

Bill, I wonder whether the fact that Logos was installed with UAC disabled causes some problems? Maybe we need to completely reinstall Logos while UAC is enabled in order to get beyond this problem? I'm not willing to take the time to do that right now, but if you are, I'd be interested to hear your experiences of whether it fixes it. UAC is the biggest pain.

Bill,
I've added some more logging to the Smart Tag, which may help show where the problem is. Please unzip the attached file and replace your L4SmrtTg.dll file with this new one. (If Word is running, it may have it locked, so you'll need to shut down Office applications first.) As before, post the log file here and I'll take a look. 6710.L4SmrtTg.zip

This must be my issue on both of my computers. Don't really use SmartTags enough to bother switcing now, but will remember next time I reinstall everything for fall/spring cleaning.

CoramDeo, "no joy" is one of several idioms for a negative outcome -- "no dice," "no soap," "no luck," etc. Not meant literally, of course. I believe "no joy" is originally British slang, but we used it all the time in the aviation world. It means the pilot does not have visual contact with the other air traffic in the area or a landmark when they should have been able to see it (e.g., they've been alerted to it by radar traffic control). http://en.mimi.hu/aviation/no_joy.html

In the Add-Ins section of the MS 2007 "Word Options" do you see "Logos Bible Software 4 (Bible References) under the "Active Application Add-ins?
Yes, I do.
In Word 2010 you have to select "Manage: Actions" not COM Add-ins. Then make sure the "enable actions" box is checked.

I have not had any problem at all with the new Smart Tags (Additional Action) in Word 2010. But I wonder if it is supposed to work in PowerPoint? It shows up in Excel (albeit only as open bible to, not replace with passage) but not in PowerPoint.
Is there a way to install it for PowerPoint?
