Comments on ALL vs Books Search and AI

My query was Paul IN bible:"Romans 1:17"  to compare Precise search in ALL and Books

Books had to be set at Match All Forms and Default Reference Matching to get the same article results as ALL, which was forced to Precise mode because of the advanced search syntax.

  1. ALL should state that it is in Precise or Smart mode as we understand that Smart is the default from the Search Help summary page, but it can be forced into Precise mode.
  2. ALL displays incorrect page numbers in its results summary. In particular, see the screenshot for "Romans: A New Covenant Commentary" (NCCS Ro) by Keener. Books shows pp 25–27, 29–30, recognizing that p.28 does not exist.
  3. There are differences in the AI article Summaries, particularly with NCCS Ro. In many cases the summary is the same for about 6 lines then differs in the last 2-3 lines.

We do display an info card when All Search switches into precise mode? Did you not see it? (We've already discussed perhaps making it more prominent).

ALL displays incorrect page numbers in its results summary.

    Thanks. We'll look into that.

It's expected that AI-generated summaries might differ subtly each time you request one.

I see the card, but Books Search also confirms the mode it is in (top right) and I am asking for a similar display in ALL Search e.g. next to the Search box.

We're deliberately trying to keep All Search simple and stripped down and point users to Books Search if they want more control.

We're deliberately trying to keep All Search simple and stripped down and point users to Books Search if they want more control.

Simple requires consistency - consistency demands that All and Books use the same method for identifying the search engine used -- despite it being informational only in the All search. Don't make the user know two things when one is sufficient; don't hide information essential to understanding the results even if many users never care - simply put the information outside the primary visual focus of the results as you did in the Book search. I am not asking for more control in the All search, I am asking for more transparency.  Remember the number of posts in the forums prior to the introduction of Bible Knowledge tags to the search? How many times did you answer "turn off the hidden match case option"? That was the lack of transparency which is what needs to be avoided here.

I appreciate Mark's point because "Precise" in a text box will convey a controllable mode. Have the current floating card display at the top of the results where it is more visible and can be manually dismissed (not fading automatically). It should be dismissed when another query is entered. The message will appear whether the query is Precise or Smart, but not having any explanation for Smart mode e.g. "Default Smart mode".

It could - or background shading/lack of box/etc. could avoid conveying a controllable mode while providing the information in the same location in one's visual field. There is no reason to add complexity to the UI where consistency and simplicity work. Think of it as the principle of visual muscle memory - every bit as strong as keystroke muscle memory.

I can go for simple and subtle!
