Native Support for Apple Silicon Processors

  • I'm really looking forward to this, as Logos crashes at launch about 60% of the time for me right now on my M1 Macbook Air.
  • I just got an M1 Pro Macbook 16" and I'm already amazed how much faster my customized passage guide went! The previous Macbook Pro was a 2011 model, so that is over a decade ago haha. I can't even imagine how making it native to M1 will be able to make it even faster, but I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

About more than 1 year ago… and nothing happens?

@Stephan Thln , it's under active development and planned to be included in the next major release of Logos for MacOS.

@Phil Gons (Faithlife) By "next major release of Logos for MacOS" do you mean Logos 10? If so, will Logos 9 customers still be able to benefit from a native version?
  • I'm eager for this to happen for potential increased performance and longer-term support for macOS.
  • Just wanted to add my voice in support for this. Logos is the last application that I have on my machine that hasn't been switched over to native Apple Silicon support. While performance is fine under Rosetta, I look forward to having it be natively supported for Apple Silicon.

Does anyone know if doing this work for Mac machines would have a benefit in better supporting ARM chips in Windows machines as well? It seems like these types of chips are probably the future of computers, at least mobile-focused machines, industry-wide.
  • Logos 9 on MacBook Pro 14 crashes/hangs nearly every time I use it. Please make it native to Apple Silicon soon.
  • Eager to leverage native Verbum support for my 2022 14" MBP M1 processor, too. I don't know if the crash issue is related, but Verbum 9 usually hangs on my first one or two launch attempts (showing the library sync splash window briefly, then disappearing). After having to force quit once or twice, the dashboard finally opens.
  • I own a Mac mini (M1) and using Logos on it has been brutal.  Every day for six months I've had multiple freezes, force quits; I've lost entire sermons because for some reason the notes didn't sync before the force quit.  So I'm cheering on logos and adding my voice - I truly, truly hope we can see this new iteration happen.  Been a user since 2005.
  • The telling thing for me:  I'm writing my sermons in Pages and the Notes app.  I don't even plan on doing that, I just find I'm doing it.

Looking forward to a native release! My M1 MacBook Air runs Logos much faster than any Mac I've had in the past (like a $4000 MBP 16"). However, Logos also crashes on my M1 multiple times daily, and I never had this problem on an Intel machine.

M1 has now been out for over a year-and-a-half. Can you give us an update of where the progress lies?

@Daniel McCoy  We're testing builds internally and plan to ship a final version later this year.

@Phil Gons (Faithlife)  Thanks for sharing this info. I also appreciate your patience in dealing with a restless userbase - this only means we enjoy the product

    Please do this ASAP.
  • It's because of this delay for Logos (M1 came out in 2020, it's been almost 2 years) and the lack of functions on iPad OS that makes me really hesitant over the past few years to do any sort of upgrade to the Logos library. There's still no copy bible verse on the mobile app... and I'm not sure if the full functionality will ever come to the iPad.

@Moses Han  What do  you mean by no “copy bible verse” on the mobile app? If you select any text, you should get the option to copy to clipboard or visual copy, even within the mobile app.

@John Huddle  I also have an M1 Mac mini, though, I have not had any real issues with freezing. When sermon prepping, what does your layout typically look like? I usually have a sermon document open on my secondary monitor and my workflow (Bible, Greek/Hebrew translation, passage guide, exegetical guide) on my primary monitor.
  • Yes please, especially now that M2 has arrived !

Yes please! Just installed new Mac Studio. It is incredible.
  • @Enrique Rivera  There's a tool in the desktop app that simplifies a lot of the copying into text.  I also can't do visual filters on the mobile app.

Okay, I know that Phil stated that builds are being tested “internally” but unless the dev team is running into significant trouble, I am utterly confused as to why there is not a public Beta? Also, is it a marketing strategy to align a working “Native M1 version” with the release of Logos 10? If so, I think it is kind of sucky that Faithlife would make Logos customers that have invested in Apples new machines, have to wait for marketing reasons.
  • While we're waiting for native Apple Silicon Logos, are there any tips for dealing with Logos 9 crashing every other time I try to open it on my MacBook Pro 14?

Logos 10 runs natively on Apple Silicon: https://www.logos.com/install

@Bradley Grainger  Indeed it does! Initial impressions are that it's much snappier overall. One specific result: In v9.17 I created an NASB95 concordance in 3:23 (MacBook Pro, M1 Pro chip). In v10.0, it took 1:07! (It was on the NIV, since the NASB concordance was already there, but should be comparable.) Woo hoo!
  • @Bradley Grainger  Will you need to purchase the logos 10 feature upgrade in order to get the native apple silicon version?

@nteIII  You can purchase a Logos 10 upgrade (base package or feature set) now, or wait for the free engine to become available in 2023.
