Improving the copy paste ability with Scriptural references

When I prepare for a sermon manuscript, I normally type in the reference for a passage. The passage then automatically opens up in the sermon document. However if I try and copy directly from that reference a section of the verse or even a few words and paste it, the whole verse is copied and pasted instead of only the words or phrase. THis means I need to change the mode to text, copy it there and return to edit mode to paste it , and only then can I divide it into smaller pieces. The reason why I try and do it this way is because in expository sermons your often commenting on smaller sections or words in a sentence, and if we improve the copy and paste ability, to being able to copy a word or a few words, in the edit mode, it will speed up the process for writing the sermon manuscript.
