TIP OF THE DAY 72: Opening books in all search results (filling in gaps)
I am adding these posts to the previous tip list L/V 10 Tip of the Day ; a final try to post and not end up in a holding cell.
QUESTION: How do I open a book in the all search results?
Skill: Open a book in all search results
ANSWER: Generic answer:
In cases where the resource is already on your device, i.e. no icon in the right margin, the methods below apply.
In cases where you own the resource but have not downloaded it to your device, i.e. there is a cloud icon on the right margin:
Either a click or a drag and drop will open a panel stating, “This resource hasn’t been downloaded yet, but here’s a preview. . .” and an option to download OR open in Web App
Clicking on the download option will convert to reading “downloading”; on completion, it will open the book to the position described in the reference link in the same panel (and tile).
Open in Web App opens the book to the position described in the reference link at (or https://app.logos.com).
In cases where you do not own the resource, i.e. there is a padlock icon in the right margin:
Either a click or a drag and drop will open a panel stating, “You don’t have a license to view this book, but here is a preview. . .” and an option to purchase the book (quick buy) or learn more which takes you to the product page on (or https://logos.com) i.e. outside of the application.
If you click on “quick buy,” you will see two intermediate screens – one for purchased but not downloaded and one for downloading – then the resource will open to its title page in the same panel and tile.
Method 1: from the footnote indicator in the Synopsis:
Note that hover over the footnote indicator gives a preview of the contents.
Click on the footnote number (in its blue capsule) – the book will open in a tile of the application’s choice OR
Grap (left click and hold) and drag the footnote number to a tile of your choice.
In either case, it will open to the position described in the footnote.
Method 2: from the footnote itself in the Synopsis:
Note that hover over the hyperlinked book title gives a preview of the contents.
Click on the linked title in the footnote (the familiar blue text) – the book will open in a tile of the application’s choice OR
Grab (left click and hold) and drag the book to the tile of your choice.
In either case, it will open to the position described in the footnote.
Method 3: From the article heading of a book search result
The article heading (hyperlink in blue text) behaves in the same manner as book titles in the synopsis except that the link is to the start of the article in which the result appears. The all search does not highlight matching results as the other searches do and, therefore, has less precise links.
QUESTION: How do I open Factbook in the all search results?
Skill: Open Factbook in all search results
ANSWER: Factbook is a card within the Search results.
The titles for each Factbook entry are links despite being black text unless hovered over. In that case, they show as a blue link and provide a preview. The title has the usual behavior: (a) you can click and allow the application to pick the tile to open in or (b) you can drag and drop in the tile of your choice.
What is unusual is that sometime the excerpted text under the title is tagged with blue Factbook tags. These links show the usual click or drag and drop behavior of links.
The final option on the Factbook card is to run a search on Factbook using the same argument as was used for the all search. This provides an additional list of Factbook entries that may be of interest.
QUESTION: How do I open a book from the Library card in the all search results?
Skill: Open book from Library card in all search results
ANSWER: Library is a card within the Search results.
The Library card shows a limited number of books from your library that are found by searching the metadata with the same search argument as was used in the all search.
If the resource is in the cloud, it will have the same behavior as a book in the main search results except that it will open to the title page.
If the resource is downloaded, it will have the same behavior as a book in the main search results except that it will open to the title page.
The “more” option at the bottom of the card, opens the library panel in a floating window with the search argument of the all search in the find books box. It includes books in your library including print books.
To open a book from the library, click on the title and let the application chose the tile in which to open the panel OR
Drag-and-drop the title to the tile of your choice.https://app.verbum.com/https://verbum.com/
