Using parallel text from the View option. When I put the ESV in the commentary text disappears for most commentaries (Carson's PNTC on John is working fine for some reason).
The problem is that the "Bible text only" visual filter from your ESV is getting incorrectly applied to the commentary. We recently made a fix in this area, and I suspect it will work correctly for you in version 43 when that releases.
As a workaround for now, you may be able to open the Reformat options in the Formatting tab and uncheck the "Bible text" option.

I had erroneously assumed that a sidebar was tightly bound to a panel and that a panel was independent except for consciously added/definitional links. Therefore, I expected all 3 to be called sidebars. What is the distinction that you are making here?
