This document provides a historical overview of Orthodox Christian apologetic theology. It discusses early Christian apologists who defended Christianity against pagan criticisms. It also describes two schools of thought on the relationship between faith and reason. The Alexandrian school, represented by Clement and Origen, affirmed the role of philosophy and intellect in understanding doctrines of faith. The North African school, represented by Tertullian, denied the importance of intellect and advocated faith alone without reason. Neither Origen nor Tertullian were ultimately recognized as authoritative Church teachers.
