OK, this morning I am trying to use the Quick Link Helpers. I copied a panel to a new tab and it is unlinked I have a different panel linked to C. I clicked in the unlinked panel and then clicked the Helper C on my shortcut bar. Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Here it is.1538.QL_Logfile.txt
Is this what you wanted?

Yes Sir this is exactly what i needed.
i see that when you had L4 up and clicked on the Helper App for C, that the book which L4 was linked with C was a dictionary or a book which uses Head Word. And the last unlinked book was the The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Letter of James. Logos cannot link books with Head Words to books that use Bible scriptures. If you were to use Logos's link C to your Pillar's book, you would find that scrolling in either of the books will not produce scrolling in the other. This is a reasonable rule that Logos uses.
You can find out more by reading this short article in the wiki: What is Linking ?
So the short answer here is: QL Helper App was doing the best it could and realized that your unlinked book did not match the link type of the book which you had linked with C.
If you had double-clicked on the QL icon you can see the status of the request made to QL as shown below.
Also something else you might want to understand about QL, is when using a commentary series (e.g. Pillars) that Logos for the time being does not support changing to other volumes via the API tools. In another words if you have a book linked with A and at Genesis 1:3 and your Pillar's volume is opened to James, then QL will be unable to reposition Pillar's to the volume on Genesis due to Logos not switching volumes when QL sends the navigation request to Logos.
EDIT: i have submitted a request to Logos for navigating within a series, see this post

Thanks Steve. I obviously just need to get more experience with using this.

Rodger,
Your are welcome Sir!
i hope that you find time to learn more about it and that it becomes useful to you. If you have other questions, feel free to add a reply and ask.
EDIT: for you and others, i have added a section to installing QuickLInk: Problems

Hi Steve
It's me again. Have done a complete format of my HDD & installed Windows 7 Ultimate edition.
Tried to reinstall Quicklinks but to no avail/ Any ideas now as to what I might try? Thanks so much.

Hi Gerald,
No i don't have any new ideas. Did you install Logos4 fresh on your newly formatted drive? i would hope that a new install might resolve your conflict. To the best of my memory, on your system Logos4 is not starting the COM program which runs along with the normal Logos4 program. i never saw it loaded in Task Manager. Something is keeping L4 from starting that app.

Hi Steve
Just to say I'm running the program on a brand new machine with Windows 7 so I would have thought the problems of the p0ast would have gone.
Have been trying your PBB as well but running into problems too. Get to end of first section OK in that when I click on BibleVerse the dialog box opens. It's the second section where I can't get the to add the macros to the ribbon in Word 2010. Have followed instructions to letter but no success.
Kind regards
Gerald

Hi Folks
Just to let you know Steve was able to help me get PBB & QL working on my new machine.
He's a genius! Thanks so much.

Thanks Gerald! i am not a genius just stubborn about getting things to work.
For those of you who are having problems with the QL Internet installation, i have added a Manual Installation section.

I'm also having an install problem--similar to, but not quite the same as the problem posted by David Paul on May 31. I tried without success to insert a copy of the error message window so have retyped the message. It reads as follows:
Error: Could NOT establish communications with Logos 4 COM.
Unable to cast COM object of type 'Logos4Lib.LogosLauncherClass' to interface
type 'Logos4Lib.ILogosLauncher'. This operation failed because the
QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID
'{65E4082F-D64E-4566-876F-81AAAF44635D}' failed due to the following error: No
such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002
(E_NOINTERFACE)).I've gotten the same error on two computers--a desktop running XP and a laptop running VISTA. I get the error whether using the web install method or the manual install method and I get it whether Logos 4 is open or closed when doing the install. I even uninstalled my firewall program on the VISTA laptop in an effort to rule out a conflict there. The install module I'm using is L4 QuickLink.Application which I downloaded from the Quick Link web page Peter said should be used.
I never get a successful install message, but after attempting the install, there are entries for Quick Links in the Control Panel list of programs and in the Start Menu. Just for kicks, I dragged the L4 QuickLinks shortcut from the start menu to the shortcut bar in Logos 4 and clicked on it from there, but got the same error message noted above when attempting the install. If anyone else has encountered this error and found a solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Hi RAusdahl,
Sorry to hear that you are experiencing this problem. As with those other few people who are having this problem, Logos4 is not starting it's other COM app. One of those who had the problem got a new laptop and installed Logos4 on it. Then he tried to install QuickLinks and it was successful. My guess is that there is something not properly installed in Logos4. The few users having this problem had different versions of windows, so the windows version is not the issue. i am guessing the re-installing Logos4 might resolve the problem, but this can be dangerous in that you might loose all your Notes/Clippings/Collections/etc. So i would Not encourage you to try this!
The way to tell if the COM app is running is to try and start QuickLinks and then look inside the TaskManager to see if the COM program for Logos is running beside the Logos.exe program.
My guess is that you will not find it running on your computer.
Again, sorry that QuickLinks is not working for you.

Hi, Steve. Thanks for your reply.
I started Logos 4, clicked on the L4 QuickLinks shortcut there, and got the error message noted in my first post. I then opened Task Manager and saw the same three QuickLinks and Logos 4 processes that I see in your post: L4 QuickLink.exe, Logos4.exe, and LogosCom.exe. When I close the QuickLinks error message window, the L4 QuickLink.exe process disappears, then a few seconds later the LogosCom.exe processe disappears. So the Com process seems to be running at least while QuickLinks is active.
But please don't worry about it. QuickLinks looks like a great little app add-on for Logos 4, and I doubt it was your intention to spend all your free hours resolving user problems when you made it available to the community. It is unfortunate I have the problem on both my machines, but such is life. Perhaps the user requests for a similar feature in Logos itself will eventually get some attention. If not, I guess I'll just have to try QuickLinks again when I'm able to upgrade my laptop. [:)]

Yes, Logos4 was running and stable when I clicked on the QuickLinks shortcut to open it.
i.e. I start Logos4. It opens to my most recently used layout. I can navigate and perform the normal functions without any trouble, I can go to the home page without any trouble, and I can access internet links from the home page without any trouble. I had previously copied (dragged) the QuickLinks shortcut from the start menu to the shortcut area in Logos4, so I click on the shortcut from within Logos4. If I open Task Manager before clicking on the QuickLinks shortcut, the only Logos/QuickLinks related process I see is Logos4.exe. When clicking on the QuickLinks shortcut from within Logos, three things appear to happen at exactly the same time (i.e. I can't visually detect any chronological sequence to them). The three things are:
- The error message window pops up.
- The L4 QuickLink.exe process appears in Task Manager.
- The LogosCom.exe process appears in Task Manager.
When I close the error message window (or click on OK button in the window), the L4 QuickLink.exe process disappears about the same time as the error window closes. The LogosCom.exe process remains open for another 3-4 seconds, then it disappears.

Well this is a new twist on QL not running properly. So now i have another mystery different than the others who cannot get QL to work....LOL. There is something in the OS or Logo4 which does not allow QL to connect with Logos's COM api.
i will have to think about this. Thanks for all the info that you have supplied!

Sorry, Steve--I didn't mean to make more work for you. [:S]
I'm wondering...does anyone know of any other apps, actions, or functions that can be initiated from within Logos 4 that require successful connection with the Logos COM api? If so, I'd be glad to give them a try to see if they're able to make the connection on my system.

Steve, I haven't had any suggestions regarding other apps, actions, or functions that need to connect with the Logos COM api, but I have kept working toward resolving the error I was getting when trying to install QuickLinks on my XP desktop and VISTA laptop. Here's an update.
- I was finally able to get QuickLinks to install on my XP desktop machine and it seems to be working fine, including the helper apps. At first I thought maybe it finally installed because you had tweaked the main QuickLinks app because I noticed the version that installed on my desktop was newer than the version listed in your installation instructions, and I knew that since getting the installation error documented in my first post, I hadn't made any changes to my desktop system other than applying Windows updates and Logos 4 updates.
- After the successful install on the XP desktop I tried it again on the VISTA laptop, but there I ran into the same problem as before. At that point I decided to uninstall Logos 4 on the laptop and reinstall it. First I uninstalled QuickLinks, then I uninstalled Logos 4. At that point I decided to uninstall Libronix as well. After doing the uninstalls, I opened CCleaner and ran the "Cleaner" app and the "Registry Cleaner" app. I then downloaded the Logos 4 installer app and did the install. After opening Logos 4, I downloaded all my resources and let Logos 4 index them. Everything seemed to go fine. I then tried again to install the main QuickLinks apps, but got the same error as before. I booted in Safe Mode with Networking and tried the install again. Same error. Next I tried booting in Safe Mode without networking, but it wouldn't even begin to install in that mode. As per my initial post, the installation appears to fail with the error noted in my first post, yet the program appears in the list of installed programs in the Control Panel, and it appears in the Start Menu.
- I should also note that I did check to make sure my system had the prerequisites for QuickLinks that you noted in your installation instructions--i.e. Windows Installer 3.1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. I could see Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile in the list of installed programs from the Control Panel, but I didn't see Windows Installer 3.1 (or any other version of it). So I opened the Services Window and checked that. There was an entry for Windows Installer but it didn't list the version number so I ran msiexec from the command prompt and it showed the version as 4.5.6002.18005. So I don't think that's the problem unless QuickLinks requires the older version.
- One last tidbit. Most of my install attempts have been via the manual install method because the web install method didn't work for me. If I do attempt to install via the web method I get an error window that says: "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance. The window has an OK button and a Details button. If I select the Details button, it displays the following info.

No transaction information is available.Sorry for such a long post. I'm not sharing the info with you because I expect you to resolve the problem. I understand very few people encounter this issue. I just thought I'd pass it along in case you've been stewing over it and there might be something that "popped out" at you.
I'm sorry I can't get it to run on my laptop (I use that the most), but am thankful it finally installed (for whatever the reason) on my desktop. I do wish there was another app, function, or feature I could test that requires communication with the Logos 4 COM api as that might shed some light on the problem, but I don't yet know of any.
Thanks again for providing such a great add-on.

Rick,
Thanks for all the info, i see you have been very persistent in trying to get QL to install. It is interesting that you got it to install in your XP system.
As for using the web installation, this is what VB Express (my programmers development app) provides for building installation builds. i wish it was more flexible and offered other solutions, but it is what it is. It is not very reliable in working from the web installation as you have seen. So that is why i added a ZIP of the installation files to my website. The main issue with that is if QL is already installed when you try to run it, it will fail and you will need to use the Control Panel to uninstall QL first, then installation from the extracted ZIP files will work. Thus the reason i tried to setup the installation from my website using VB's web installer (as we see that is not reliable).
The prerequisite files for .NET 4 seem to be installing correctly because you could not have gotten the original error message on your Oct 1 post if they had not. From the original error message, something inside Windows or Logos is preventing LogosCOM.exe from identifying itself as a COM class (or allowing VB to connect via COM). Your problem is similar to others with the exception that LogosCOM.exe is loading and the others are not getting it to load. Logos provides this app as an interface between Logos4 and other apps to translate its COM API commands to Logos4 as well as its responses to other apps (QL).
As for other apps which use the Logos4 COM, i searched the forum and did not find anyone else's app which specified that they use the COM API. Early on when users were having problems with QL and the COM API i contacted Logos developers by email and asked if they had a sample app which connected to their COM api and received a couple of emails. The last email was from Bob Pritchett telling me that Logos did not have such a sample app and kindly explained that the developers where quite busy working on Logos features & bugs.
So it seems you have exhausted your options on getting QL to load on your laptop. i thank you for all your efforts and apologize that QL has caused you so much time and frustration. Who knows sometime in the future maybe Logos will make changes or the developers will help us figure out a way to get this to work.
Blessings in Christ!

Steve,
Please don't apologize--absolutely no need for that. The fact is, there are people who are enjoying and benefiting from QuickLinks, and the few of us who have hit snags with it are no worse off than we were before you made it available. I suspect we might be a wee bit jealous of those using it successfully [:P] but we certainly have no right to complain.
Thanks again for making it available. It would be awesome if Logos could take a look at it, make it work for everyone, incorporate it into their product (with your permission), and reward you for your effort.

Steve,
I had downloaded and used your QL toolbar when you first created it; then I ran into the problem of updating it and ended up removing it. I have just installed the web QL, and it was very easy. I enjoyed using it, and I look forward to again setting up my layouts. Two questions: To install on my laptop--just repeat what I did for the desktop? Secondly, when updates or changes are made, how would I update the application on my machine?
Thank you for this great little tool.

Hi Jane,
Jane Parrish said:To install on my laptop--just repeat what I did for the desktop?
Yes, just run the installer. If you have problems, the web page shows a manual method for installing.
One thing to make note of, is that you should only add shortcuts to QL or Helper Apps to Logos on one of the computers. Logos4's sync should make those show up on your 2nd computer. If you have the same OS on both computers then the shortcuts in L4 should work on that 2nd computer.
If not, then i have seen it work by using a work-around of creating a folder on your desktop of both computers (but you must have the folder named exactly the same). Then copy QL & Helper shortcuts in windows to the folder that you just created. Then remove the old shortcuts for QL & Helpers from L4. Then add shortcuts on only one of the computers from the desktop folder which you created.
[the difficulty here is that L4's shortcuts use an exact path & filename for each shortcut in L4]
Jane Parrish said:Secondly, when updates or changes are made, how would I update the application on my machine?
You would need to update them on both computers, as these are independent apps running on each computer.

Steve,
Sure enough the Helper Apps do not work on the laptop. I discovered that if I right click on the QL icon in the task bar that the helper apps work. Do I still need to make the folder on the primary computer desktop to get the apps to work in the menu bar of Logos? (i.e. just refer back to your post of 7:42 yesterday for "how to"? Thank you ahead of time for your time.

It sounds like you are close to having things work on the laptop...
Jane Parrish said:I discovered that if I right click on the QL icon in the task bar that the helper apps work.
Did you start QL from a shortcut in L4 (before you right clicked on it in the task bar) ?
[If so then you may not have installed the Helper apps on the Laptop]With the current installation all QL apps (including Helpers) are located in a single folder when installed (as shown in the image below). So you might check by clicking on the Start button and checking to see if the Helper apps are on your laptop. If they are not, then you will need to go to the QL web page and install them (first close Logos4 before installing and close QL).
Otherwise if the Helper apps are present on the laptop as shown below, then perhaps your shortcuts in L4 for the Helper apps are not properly set on your desktop computer. On your desktop in L4 remove the Helper app shortcuts from L4's shortcut bar. Then add back the Helper apps to L4's shortcut bar per step #6 in the installation instructions. You will want to close L4 on the desktop and then open L4 on the laptop and wait for sync to add the Helper app shortcuts to L4's shortcut bar.

Thank you, Steve. This is the first opportunity I've had to do what you suggested. The apps work on both the desktop and the laptop. Thank you so much for your prompt replies and for sharing these great tools.
