But that

But that requires three backups because Carbonite won't backup locally will it? Crashplan could do all that (cloud, local and network) all from the one application. And, unlike Carbonite, Crashplan will backup any file, not just the ones it chooses.
A google search for Carbonite crashplan makes interesting reading!

I don't use any backup program (yes, I know, some day I'll probably wish I had), but from the ads I've heard I think you can choose what to back up with Carbonite and I haven't heard of any inability to back up any particular flavor of file.

Carbonite ignores certain filetypes by default (e.g. videos), and you have to explicitly include them - one file at at time - if you want them backed up. You can't back up system files, even if you want to: http://www.carbonite.co.uk/help-me-decide/carbonite-backup/backup-files

Who would want to back up system files anyway? They need to be installed with the program, n'est-ce que pas? (When I was at Claremont Henri Cazelles was a visiting lecturer who had a habit of inserting this quite regularly into his conversation. It became a bit irritating, but he was a prince of a guy).

Opinions on Genie Timeline?
I am trying it, but it runs at every boot up for several minutes (in the background but grinding the disk). It seems to do a good job backing up, but this constant running slows everythign else down, like Logos.
Does CrashPlan do that?

I've used the Genie backup programs "on and off" for several years. I'm still using ver. 7 on one or two computers. I quit paying for the upgrades because the reply to almost every tech. issue was, "It's addressed in the latest upgrade."
Sorry I can't speak to the latest version.

No. CrashPlan uses a lot of memory (200-300Mb), which might slow you computer down a bit if you only have 2Gb RAM or less, but hardly uses any CPU and never thrashes the disk. You have throttles where you can limit the percentage of CPU it can use either when you're at your computer and when you're not.

I second that endorsement. The free version does everything the paid version will do except back up to the Crashplan servers.

Will try it out when I have some time. One other little question, not that this would be a deal-breaker if it's otherwise really good: Does the backup set creation tool let you specify files with wildcards (e.g., all my *.doc files in such-and-such a folder, plus everything in all subfolders of some-other folder, including any new subfolders I might create there in the future), or do I have to keep adding new folders and files to it when I create ones that I now want to add to my backup set?
Sorry for the belated response. I have been in Joplin, MO for the last five days and haven't had time to check the forums. You may have already tried Crashplan by now.
I haven't tried using wild cards Rosie. But it will automatically include subfolders. And if you add a file to an included folder it will include that file in the next backup. You also have control over how long Crashplan will keep backup sets.

I use Crashplan. For $12.00 a month I have unlimited space available for an unlimited number of computers. It also handles the backups between my computers.
Why not use Carbonite ? -- it's only $59/yr and you can get it for less if you mention Rush (and a 15 day free trial). That's less than $5 / mo.

I looked at Carbonite when I was searching for a backup solution. But there were some things I didn't like about it although it escapes me now as to what they were. To get all of the features I now have for $144 a year I would have had to get the business plan with Carbonite which runs $229.
I usually try to compare apples and apples when making a software choice.

I forgot to mention the biggest reason. Carbonite is $59.00 a year per computer. Crashplan is $144.00 per year for as many computers as i want to back up. In my case that is five computers.

I must admit I cleaned some of the dust off. I took one picture and surprised myself, a swipe and a picture later resulted in what is seen.
The bottom portion of the desk stays pretty clean, even the server book I have on the desk bugs me. The second shelf usually accumulates things.

Drat, then I'm out. Two things I can't stand: A small desk, and a cluttered desk. One thing I love about Logos is it helps me avoid having books and papers stacked around. I distract too easily and things piled all around harm my focus. I also like room to spread out, even if it's just my arms around the keyboard, so a big desk is almost a must.
So if I took a pic of where I am now at the church office you'd see a large, wooden desk with an iMac in the middle and a wireless keyboard and mouse in front of it, easy to stow away when not in use. The iMac itself is also easy to slide out of the way onto a nice, empty table next to the desk. Mess, stay away!

I too have noticed that many Logos users are using two or monitors. I think I would like to try that option. How do you set one up with multiple monitors and another one posted that they thought that the "alt tab" was sufficient. Could you explain what the "alt tab" function will enable the user to do.
Thanks in advance

Alt + tab allows Windows users to toggle between open windows, you can use it to also go between Logos and other programs.

Are you asking how to use multiple monitors on your computer? Are you running windows or pc? What version? Do you already have two monitors? Do you have a second video out port available on your computer?

Yes, I would like to know how to run additional monitors on my pc. Yes I have additional monitors available. I am running windows 7. While I am not as savvy on all the bells and whistles that computers have, so I could possibly be mistaken on what I am about to say, I do have one video output port on my computer.
Thanks for the alt + tab explanation.
Thanks in advance

Perhaps I should be more specific, I am looking for information on how to run multiple monitors on one pc. One my frustrations is having to go back and forth between frames. Maybe have the exegetical guide on one and the passage guide on the other and One Note on a third. Instead of having everything compacted on to one screen. This may seem trivial but it is one my quirks about how I do things.
Thanks in advance

Multiple monitor functionality requires a video card with multi-monitor support.

The previous poster Ryan is correct. You must have a video card which supports this feature. I will have to let the PC brothers & sisters take a stab at helping you since I only use Macs. For what its worth - have you just tried hooking up a second monitor and restarting the computer?

I seem to recall having hooked up my laptop to an old monitor I have and being able to use it that way. I haven't tried it with my new computer since I'd rather have one monitor and use <alt-tab> to switch between different displays (you can float a window) rather than get whiplash switching my view from one monitor to the other. Besides, desk space is at a premium.

Ryan,
Thanks for the information. Know I need to find out if my computer has that capability. I assume that it is listed somewhere in the control panel?

Larry,
With the mention of Control Panel I assume you've got a PC running Windows?
On your desktop you should be able to right click and go to something akin to an appearance settings. Then from there one of the tabs (do they even have tabs/options anymore? [:P]) should have what video card you are running. We can look it up from there if you have the compatability.

Larry,
If you look on the back of your computer tower and there is an empty plug that matches the cable from your second monitor, your computer likely has that capability. Plug it in, reboot your computer, and see what happens!

If anyone running a Mac is reading this with the same questions, I posted a review on BestBuy's website explaining how to sift through Apple's vague and confusing product line to get the right parts to run two monitors.

Boy, am I glad you don't have to go through this rigamarole to run 2 monitors with a PC.
So with a PC, it is going to use a Video Card with 2 or more Video Ports. Within your computer is a board, it is called the Motherboard. On it is usually a special card slot, most new computers have PCI-Express or PCIe. You will need to know if your computer has a populated or unpopulated PCIe slot. Older motherboards may have an AGP slot, but if your computer is fairly new, it should be PCIe.
If the card in there only has 1 video port, you can purchase a new card with multi-monitor support, and swap the old one with the new one. If on the back of your computer, you have a video card that has 1 VGA and 1 DVI, most likely you are already able to connect multiple monitors.
Find out what motherboard you have using diagnostic tools that are freely available, or open up your case and physically look at it. You can find many pictures of what the slot looks like that will help you determine what slot you have, what is available, and what your options are.
It will typically be one of the following (Has pictures...)-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express
Also, if two is not enough... I think last year manufacturers just released a video card with support for 6 monitors.

Strange.I simply plugged my two displays into the Mac Pro—same procedure for the two Macs before this one. I do not understand the problem.

Jack,
With an iMac the video has to come in through what is now a video display port (proprietary) which used to be a different port 2 years ago. Then you have to find the correct output to plug into the monitor, which Apple makes 4 different types accommodating 5 outputs. Then they conveniently label everything with the same name. When I first dealt with it all it didn't seem like anyone thought about the packaging. With 21 of 21 recommends you can see others have been frustrated by the same issue. [;)]

KS4J has been tempting me with talk of a new 27" iMac, but then I think, "What is wrong with my 4-year-old Mac Pro. It still does everything I want it to do, and does it all very well." Now, you have convinced me that the old one is better.
I need that money more than Steve Jobs does. Besides, how many Logos resources can that money purchase? [:D]

Respectfully, it is not as confusing as Paul made it seem. Apple does change their video out ports much more frequently than others, but each time they do so it is with a purpose and is an improvement.
One reason apple has so many proprietary video out ports is because they need a small form factor to get so many things into the laptop. Apple supported three different DVI connectors. The regular one was ONLY for Pro line computers. They were on some of the bigger laptops. Both the "mini" DVI and "micro" DVI were developed for smaller laptops.
In Late 2008 Apple released the Mini Display Port, which allowed for greater resolution. It also was capable of carrying audio, which was implemented in Early 2010. With proper adapters, the Mini Display port is capable of connecting to a wide variety of displays. Toshiba, Lenova, HP & Dell have all licensed this technology from Apple for use in laptops.
This year, apple announce a new technology in partnership with Intel called "thunderbolt." This technology is potentially a replacement for USB/Firewire. Besides much faster connections, one advantage is that apple is using the Mini Display Port connector. Another advantage is that up to seven devices (only two can be displays) can be "daisy chained" without requiring a hub. On a laptop or iMac, this means that two external displays can be used from the same port!
If you go to Best Buy, all you have to know is what kind of port is on your Mac, and what kind of connection you need to hook it up (i.e. "mini display port" to "DVI.") It will be confusing if you only take a look at the port connecter, because they do look VERY similar.
