Those who have been wanting more Anabaptist works, rejoice! I'm working on some. This is the first one I've finished. I'm also (slowly) chipping away at Martyr's Mirror and History of the Mennonites by Cassel.

I stumbled upon this book on Google Books and was intrigued. I screen-captured and OCR'ed it, formatted it as a Logos PB, and tagged it with links for all the Early Church Fathers and Bible references that didn't get picked up automatically. I wrote to the author and got his permission to post it here, even though it's got his copyright message in it, which he wanted me to leave as is. He thanked me for my interest in his work and for making it available for others to read. Enjoy!

I've also created a cover image for it (the art work is public domain, found via Google Images, licensed for reuse with modification (I didn't end up modifying the image other than letting some of the yellow background show through -- not intentional -- My Adobe Illustrator skills are rudimentary):

That is so very kind of you. It sounds like you covered all the bases at considerable effort. I hope Fred Morgan still checks in and sees this.

What OCR software do you use? Is the accuracy rate acceptable? I have always wondered which one is best for the old typesets that are grainy and archaic.

ABBYY Screenshot Reader. Yes, it's quite good. ABBYY FineReader is the cream of the crop, and this Screenshot Reader uses their same technology in a less feature-packed simple utility. (It's really easy to use; just click Capture, drag a rectangle on the screen, and it will OCR all that text and copy it to the clipboard for you.) Books with clear text it can handle with 100% accuracy. That degrades considerably with poorer quality scans. But it can handle all kinds of fonts and foreign languages. The one thing it doesn't always do right is carriage returns, which is slightly irritating. If you're grabbing a list of items, it will sometimes run many of them together on a single line with spaces between them instead of line breaks. But that's easy enough to fix up. And if it's book content you're copying, that's mostly in paragraph form anyway, which it gets right. It handles hyphenated words broken at ends of lines and brings them in as words without hyphens.

It costs $29.99 (used to be $10 when I bought it), and it is well worth it. I use it nearly every day for all kinds of things: capturing error messages from popups, copying text from Logos resource info panels which we still can't select and copy from (I'm still waiting! still no comment from Logos even though this UserVoice request has 533 votes), and grabbing text from on-screen image-only books to insert quotes in things I'm writing. It takes up very little screen real estate, so you can keep it on top and it doesn't block your work:

That's really interesting - I tried a pdf to Word converter but it would only make images (glad it had a money-back guarantee).

So once you have the book, doesn't it take forever to add all the page numbers and references, or is there a quick way to do this?

It was only a 40 page book. It took me perhaps three hours or so to do all OCR screen grabbing and the tagging. But I've gotten pretty quick at this sort of thing.

Gary, I can not wait... The Martyrs Mirror Online has all the Public Domain Illustration plus those from other editions. They use to have a rtf file. but do not think this is up, but may be ask for. http://www.homecomers.org/mirror/

Yes, I do have all the illustrations for Martyrs Mirror downloaded and plan to insert them in the appropriate places. The tricky part will be seeing if that adds too much bulk (and thus performance degradation) to the file. I will have to take some time to reduce the resolution of all of them for an appropriate screen resolution, since they're all way bigger than needed (multiple megabytes). It's going to take a long time. MM is a huge book. But I have the print edition alongside me as I work, so I can verify and fix up all the OCR errors in the online edition. So it's going to be worth the wait, I think.

Have you seen that Logos just finally announced the Classic Anabaptist and Mennonite History Collection (19 vols.)? Obviously your persistence in asking for more Anabaptist resources has finally paid off. I know it does take them a while to put together collections like that, but now we'll finally be able to have it.

I'm still working slowly chipping away at Martyrs' Mirror, but seeing as they've now planned on including History of the Mennonites in this new collection, I have abandoned my work on that. I cannot offer it as a competing free book, and no longer want to waste my time on it anyway. I'm a bit nervous that they'll pull the same thing on my for Martyrs' Mirror.

Is this book a thesis? I was just wondering about publisher info ect. Thank you so much for making this available, I am very much interested in the Anabaptist movement (and the Radical, i.e. non-Magisterial arm of the Reformation).
