Purchased L4 over a month ago. Want to study Prophecy. My wish is that God will give this 70 year old wisdom and understanding of Revelation and the other prophetic books. So glad to be a part of the family of Logos. I surely need help.

Lynden Williams, involved in pastoral ministry for over 15 years. Studied in Jamaica where I received a Masters degree in Pastoral Theology. I live in the Bahamas, and have been using Libronix (Logos 3) since 2004. I recommend Logos 4 however, as it is a better platform.

Not a newbie, but after reading the blog post for today, decided to chip in. Logos, can this be placed under a separate category. It should be placed right on top of "General". I want it to be the first thing that the new user to the forum sees when he logs onto the site.

There are many in the forums who are will and able to answer your questions. Among forum users, there are no dumb questions. Watch the videos, and read the training articles.

For starters tell us how long you have been a Logos user?
What kinds of resources or packages you own?
What kinds of tasks do you use your Logos software for?
And what is on your Logos wish list?

I’ve been using Logos Software for a year and half. Before Logos I used another bible program (Quick verse) for years and consider it a very good program.  But I am sorry it’s not in the same class with Logos 4 and that’s not a slam on quick verse because, no other Bible software is either.  Logos 4 is ahead of its time and the thing with me is there is so much it will do that there is no way to keep up with all of it.

    Hello everyone!

Like many here I'm a noob Logos user.  I've been using Logos for 2 months now and enjoying the rich resources.

I have the Scholar's edition package.  I also noticed that my MacArthur Lifeworks that I purchased years ago on the older Libronix system got picked up!  I stopped using Logos because the older Libronix system was too slow.  I was (still am) an avid eSword user and used that for many years.  However with Logos4 I rarely use eSword if at all.

My main tasks are the daily bible reading plan, studying for Sunday sermons, Sunday school lessons, and answering technical questions from family members.

I don't really have anything on my Logos wish list except maybe this one feature:  Allow the importing of existing PDFs into Logos.  There's a lot of public domain resources on the Net that I'd like to import into Logos instead of having multiple applications open when doing my bible study.  In Desiring God, almost all of John Piper's books are available for free in PDF format.  Allowing those PDFs to be imported into Logos would be absolutely a big help.  I understand that imports require more than just adding text, it requires scanning all the bible references, keyword metadata, producing hyperlinks within each book to key references to other Logos tools, etc.  However I'd like to atleast be able to read and search an imported PDF in Logos.  That's my #1 wishlist at this point.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

    Hello,

Ive got Logos on my computer for a couple years now, but became a user since I upgraded to Logos 4. A good friend in Holland supported me by paying for the Leaders version. We left Holland 5 years ago to be missionaries among the First Nations. We live on a reservation near Victoria at Vancouver Island.

I use Logos for my daily devotions, Sermon prep, sometimes I do a puzzle with my kids. I browse the Homepage daily, open sometimes the book of the day and read some parts of it. Logos became a part of my life. I'm very thankful for that! I'm now waiting for the first Bible Study Magazine to come in my mailbox.

For starters tell us how long you have been a Logos user?

For longer than I'ld like to admit, but proud to say since 1.x and a stack of floppy diskettes

What kinds of resources or packages you own?

All kinds.  I started out just getting a few Bible-only resources for searching and convenience, and when I realized (after reading emails and online articles/blogs) that Logos has a direction in supporting the resources continuously, I began to build my library.  It is now to a point that it is in my Will to bequeath to my Daughter (With appropriate license transfer fees included).  I now have well over 4000 resources and dozens more preordered and community pricing "on the way"; not to mention my daily visits to the site, reading the blogs and tweets to TRY to keep up.

What kinds of tasks do you use your Logos software for?

Reading books, Personal Bible Study, Sermon Prep, graduate research and work, original language learning, refreshing, and searching, and much more.  I can't believe I started with just wnating a Bible on my computer.

And what is on your Logos wish list?

Current wish is that L4 would be completed.  I want to be able to directly access my media files, powerpoints, etc.

That the Ipad (and to a lesser extent the iphone/touch) app would be more complete:  I am currently dissapointed that it allows some books to be viewed, but that the books content is not readable (especially prevelant in special formatted texts like interlinears, parallel bibles, table, advanced formatting).  I guess I would prefer that they arenot available, rather than available but broken. (see point one about media-type files).  the logos app is THE reason i have an ipad. :) (also having notes/highlights available for ipad/syncing would be huge)

next wish is that the Logos website was more personal-account-dynamic.  kind of like the prepub pages.  I have so many resources and collections, I have to sometimes spend a lot of time looking up and searching my library to verify if i have a resource already.  and this is especially difficult with collections.  When I am browsing the product library on teh logos.com site, I want the site to tell me if I already own it.  and FURTHER for me to be able to configure this.  I own third party logos resources like concordia library, galaxie, etc that may have crossover works.

Next wish is to have available pre-made collections.  especially for the "box set" collections.  the current way to do them is great, but way too difficult for neophites (I currently have 2, that I got from walking through a couple blog articles a while back.  i know i would use them more if i had them, but i am too far along now, with over 4000 resources, I shouldn't have to take the time to go through and make these) and why are (boxed) collections available, but that "collection" isn't already set in L4, it just boggles me.

along with the aformentioned notes and highlights for ipad, offline searching and a better way to select what resources are available on/off line (radio button, checkbox from the list, or something better than in the book properties).

and finally, since this is a wish list... I wish that it was all FREEEEE. :) hehehehee

Well I have been using Logos 4 since it was released when I upgraded from logos 3 leader's library. I currently have the Scholar's Gold package.

I have been enjoying the contents of the library. I use it daily for bible readings and I occasionally set up some book of interest as a part of the daily reading.

On my wish list is the MacAuther LifeWorks Library and the Nelson 501 Unlock.

I am fascinated everyday I use Logos. It thumps every Bible software I have ever used.

Allow the importing of existing PDFs into Logos.

    Welcome to the forums.

In Logos 3 days we had Personal Book Builder which allowed use of public domain material in Logos. The material had to be converted but someone on the forums wrote a conversion program that made that simpler. Personal Book Builder in Logos 4 has been pushed back to early 2011 (see: http://www.logos.com/4/missingfeatures). The PBB creator software was an extra cost option so it might not be for everyone. We haven't been told how this will handled when available in Logos 4. Those with a Logos Library should get the ability to read PBB resources without charge if the old model is followed.

You can take a look at some of the resources that were made available in PBB format on the non-Logos site of Thomas Black a Logos Forum MVP here: http://www.stilltruth.com/category/technology/libronix-downloads These will work in Logos 3.0 which is still available for download: http://www.logos.com/support/download/30bupdate Hope this info helps and welcome again.

    Hello everyone,

I've been posting here since July I think, and didn't realize this thread existed. Since then, I've gotten tremendous help from many of you, including Rosie Perera, Mark Smith, Dave Hooton, William Bingham, Kevin Becker, and several others.  Just want to say Thanks!

I started using Logos this summer in June.  Back in 1997/98 I needed a program to help me search for Scripture verses.  I heard of Logos from one of my roommates (students at DTS) but I couldn't afford it.  Well, many years later, I finally decided to get Logos 4.  Even now I still can't really afford it, but you only live once on this planet (thank the Lord, actually). After thinking about getting Logos for several years, I finally have the Scholar Silver package with some additional resources.

I use Logos 4 for personal Bible study and, perhaps one day, will use it for other purposes.

What's on my Logos wish list? For starters, that Logos would implement a wish list for those who have a Logos account, a mechanism similar to Amazon.  Resources that I like to have in non-ranking order:

    1. IVP Essential References V3
    2. Complete set of Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
    3. Lexham Hebrew-English Interlinear
    4. Remaining NAC commentary volumes
    5. NIDOTTE
    6. WBC 59+ volumes
    7. NICOT/NICNT 40+ volumes

I am enjoying Logos software.  I realize I will never use all the advanced features that are built-in, but thanks to you all on this forum, and the information posted in the Wiki, I am slowly learning what I can do with Logos. That's it for now...

I received the Logos Bible Study package as a gift a couple of years ago.  When version 4 came out, I upgraded to the Scholar's Libarary.  I have also added many additonal resources to my library. One of my most recent purchases was the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos Bible Software.  I love the new Free Book Preview and that led to me purchasing the Hugh Ross collection!

I use Logos mainly for personal Bible study.  It wasn't until I began using Logos that I really started to read and study God's Word.  I subscribed to Bible Study magazine with the first issue and I usually sit down with the magazine, with Logos open and find it's a wonderful tool to keep track of everything - from notes to favorite Bible passages to my prayer journal and everything in between.  I also use it in conjunction with my women's Bible study group.

My number one "wish" on my Logos wish list is the ability to print right from the program. Although, I understand that it is being developed.  I would love the ability to print my Bible study notes instead of copying and pasting them to a Word document.

Thank you for a wonderful resource has grown with me in my relationship with Jesus!  It will be something that I will use for the rest of my life.

Howdy - I'm Mary from Texas and have owned Logos Scholars Level for 2 years but never used it.  I recently upgraded to version 4 and attended one of Morris Proctor's seminars and now plan on using it a bunch!  I'm a seminarian and this program will make my research easier and faster.

In my former profession, I was working as a community manager for a major social media provider so I'm at home in forums.  Thank you for your welcome and I hope to be able to glean great info from y'all and also share in my experiences.

Been in the commerical construction industry all my life and am not 'retired'.  This is one of the best tools I have seen.

    • Been looking at it for over a year and bought it 2 months ago.
    • Bought the scholars package (its what the salesman at the 'trade show' suggested, great guy by the way) have not checked into add ons but would like K/D someday.  Just don't know how to go about it.
    • Use it for Daily Bible reading/study/prayer, use it as my collective note taker in the notes section and all my sermon notes are all in one place and associated by title and by verse.

It's real simple in Logos 4. First go to Logos' web site and locate the resource, then add it to your cart and pay for it. Logos 4 will discover you have purchased the resource and download it automatically. (It can be a little more complicated, but you can read about it here: http://wiki.logos.com/Adding_new_resources_to_Logos_4)

Here is the direct link to K&D: http://www.logos.com/products/details/1690

Welcome, Paul, to the forums & to Logos software.

You can add K&D OT Commentary to your library as a single purchase or in an upgrade package.

K&D OTC is included in Scholar Silver and above.
see here: Scholar's Library: Silver (LE) http://www.logos.com/products/details/5482
You can see the retail price difference between your Scholar level and the next step up is $370.

see here: Keil & Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament http://www.logos.com/products/details/1690
After the K&D purchase you would only be $220 shy of the Silver retail price. If you will check out what other titles are included in the Scholar Silver package I think you will agree it is well worth the extra $220 to upgrade. Upgrading base packages is the single best value you can find. But only you can determine if it is truly something you need and will use.

To see a side-by-side comparison of the different packages go here:

answering technical questions from family members.

no kidding?!  What kinds of technical questions do you get--and how does Logos help you?

I don't really have anything on my Logos wish list except maybe this one feature:  Allow the importing of existing PDFs into Logos.

this isn't PDF, but PBB (Personal Book Builder), which, depending on the copyright status, you can make your own L4 searchable books.  Here is what Bob had to say about it in this thread:

PBB for Logos 4 isn't coded yet... so things are still flexible.

    The basic idea is:

    A) No more second-class citizens. PBB will use the same internal file
format as books we distribute, so highlighting and other features "just
    work."

    B) Compiling will probably be done on the server. (Because we're
making PBB books first-class citizens, they need to go through the
primary metadata and license databases, so we can sync them to your
multiple devices, let your read your PBB's on your iPhone, etc.)

    C) Your content defaults to private, just like your notes and other information.

    D) You'll have the option to share your books with "groups" of other
people. (And your notes, highlights, etc.) You'll have per-file control
of exactly what you share and who you share it with.

    E) We're considering a PBB store, like the App Stores for mobile
phones, where you could choose to sell PBB's for which you owned the
copyright, with Logos handling the credit card transactions,
    downloading, etc.

This is just "the state of the thinking"....

Well said, Matthew.  Although I got resources that I probably will never use (and yet, several of these resources I am excited to have), I went the base package upgrade route because the cost of purchasing the individual products (K/D, NAS Commentary set, Pulpit Commentary set, etc.) would have been more!  The pluses outweigh the minuses when upgrading.

Hi I'm Gary.  This is my first time posting to the forum but I have been a Logos user for about 4 years.  I have a question concerning the Personal Book Builder - Is there a time frame for when it might be completed?

Nothing comes before the Word of God and our personal time with God.
That has to be first in our lives.  The software is only as good as it
helps us achieve our goals with God.  The study of the Bible is
preeminent for God magnified His Word above His name (Ps 138:2b) so it
behooves us to do no less than to magnify it above our own names (or
above everything we stand for). God wants us to understand it. (Eph 1:18).  As believers and leaders we are responsible to [Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.] (II Tim 2:15). We have so much that God has given us so let us have hearts full of thanksgiving to Him in the name of Jesus Christ.  Let's give what we know to others.  With that said, I love this software.

My enthusiasm for the Logos 4 program spread to my wife who I persuaded to attend a camp logos 4 camp with me last month (in Huntsville, AL of all places).  Now she had to have her own copy of scholar edition while I upgraded to gold.  I love the way you can extract so much information from the huge list of resources using the passage guide, the exegetical guide, and the word study guide.  We are reworking the syllabii for the camp logos class.  So much material covered in that class - but all at a comfortable rate.  It was a top rate presentation of the material.  My hat is off to Morris Proctor.  I am working on my son and daughter and my friends presently to get them excited about the software.

My name is David Sincerbox and I have used L3 for at least 8 years and am now getting oriented in L4. I have the Silver Package plus lots of other books I've added through the years including the Word Biblical Commentary series. I am a retired math and physics instructor and science museum director who is now a part time Anglican minister (an ordained Deacon, one of three ordained ministries in the Anglican tradition, tho other two being the Priest and the Biship; all, however, are considered deacons). My Logos definitely helped me with my ordaination exams. I purchased on prepub the video series on learning Greek and Hebrew with L4 and I recently completed Dr. Heiser's video series on digging into the Hebrew. I began with Hebrew because I had had two years of personal mentoring in Greek with a the well-known author and scholar T. M. Moore whose assistent I was at Cedar Springs Presbytherian Church in Knoxville. I plan to go through the Greek video series this fall. As I discover more and more what L4 can do, I am increasingly impressed by it. I just applied my visual filters to the Hebrew text of Joel using the ESV reverse interlinear and came to some exciting interpretative conclusions on the use of the piel stem in the first chapter whch were not covered in the commentaries. I use L4 for teahing preparation and sermon preparation. I would like to purchase the Anchor Bible Dictionary and the Walke/O'connor introduction to Hebrew syntax as my next additions to my library.

Hi Gary, I was right there with you in Huntsville! I agree, Moe is the best. He is gifted at this, and I'm still going through my notes and his manuals, almost a month later.

As for L4 and can truthfully say I have never been as excited for a software package since Microsoft Office came out in 1994. Hello all.  I am a newbie to Logos and have been a user all of 45 minutes.  All I can say is WOW.  There's a lot more to it than the demo vid lets on.  I'm trying to get some decent layouts going for reading, general study and sermon prep.  Any ideas?

Welcome Jackie. There are some good videos to check out on the making of layouts. You'll find them listed on the wiki. Check the wiki for other information about making collections, using features, etc. The link is at the top of the page.

    Hi all,

I've been praying to acquire a scholar's gold of this software but i'm a Mac user. Ever since i learned that they're developing a Mac version, i've been following its development since last Dec. 2009. When i checked recently, the Mac version is still in beta. I plan to purchase when it's fully ready for Mac.

Welcome to the forums, and congratulations on your wise choice of an OS! [8-|]

Consult the Logos 4 for Mac (http://community.logos.com/forums/75.aspx) forum. You will discover that many users consider the Mac version as fully ready for their use already.

    Questions:

I am not sure about how to ask a question on the Forum and where to ask it so please forgive for using "Reply" as I didn't see a "Post" option. I have a couple of questions.

    1) Is there a specific place to go to on the Forums to get help 24/7/365? I suppose this would be a place where other users monitor for questions... perhaps like the chat rooms?

    2) Is there a way to build a concordance for a search like say all the verses where the phrase "I am" occurs?

    3) Is there a way to organize the Bibles to be searched into groups and search multiple Bibles simultaneously?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am struggling with the learning curve and the Logos 4 Mac Beta, but mostly  the learning curve. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

At the top of each forum there is a "Write New Post" button - this enables you to enter a new post.

Many more details about using the forum are available at http://wiki.logos.com/Using_the_Forum. It is an excellent description of navigating around and using these forums.

These forums are the ideal place to get answers 24/7 - as was recognised in a recent blog entry at http://blog.logos.com/archives/2010/08/how_to_get_logos_support_at_130_am.html

This is provided by the search facilities in Logos - for your example you would click the "search button", select "Bible search", put your phrase into the search box, choose the version you want and set it going.

You can group Bibles (and other resources) in a number of ways. In the example below I am selecting the drop-down to allow me to change the Bibles being searched and selecting "Top Bibles".

    image

I have this set to include the NIV, ESV, NRSV, ISV and NLT and you can see the results below:

This "Top Bible" setting is done using prioritization and information concerning this - and other aspects of using the Logos library - is at http://wiki.logos.com/Library.

There are other ways of doing what you want to do but hopefully this will get you started.

Hi Robert and welcome to the Logos Forums...

Graham did a great job answering your questions, but I will add on that you would find the feature videos for Logos 4 helpful in understanding the most used features. They can be found at http://www.logos.com/videos. It is my understanding that although they are mostly done on PC's the features are also in the Mac software. So they should help you get acquainted with the features you will most want to use.

You said something about using Logos 4 Mac Beta and Mac has it own area if you are needing to ask a specific Logos 4 Mac related question, otherwise the general forum should be able to help you out with most other questions. There is no special 24/7/365 specific area to the Forums, since all the latest posts are shown on the page that I have screen captured below.

You might also find some of the links here New to the Forums? helpful.

Blessings as you learn Logos and mine deep into God's Word!

Hi, I'm a newbie in SO MANY WAYS.

Saved by Christ less than two months ago, I purchased the Scholar's Silver version today because my Walk is already leading me to next chapters in my 47-yr-old life.  Praise the Lord that I can have my joyous rebirth at this time, locate a wonderful package like L4, and then make my first post on a 10,000+ person forum such as this!!

I'd be grateful for 'first steps' suggestions from those who've been where I am - hungry but overwhelmed by the book menu and wanting to get off to the best start.

Welcome Joe, to the forums, and more importantly to God's great, big family! We're not always pretty, but we're all His!

Okay, about Logos4. I'd encourage you to open the home page, type in a scripture passage you want to look at and press "Go." Yes, it may look a little overwhelming at first, but don't sweat it. Read the Bible passage first, and then start to look at the supporting documents and resources to help you dig deeper. Not sure where to start? I'd recommend John 1:1, then just read as much as you want. Then dig into it as deeply as you want.

Look at the videos (see the link below, in my signature) for prioritizing your resources, and put a Bible dictionary or two in that list. That way you can click on Bible places, names, or even many ideas and get a Bible dictionary article that explains what you're looking at.

Go to the Passage Guide and start exploring commentaries, cross references, people, places, things, etc.

Enjoy exploring God's Word, and enjoy the blessing of benefiting from others' study by reading widely.

    God Bless!

    Welcome Joe!

It is wonderful to see a new Christian finding Logos software so quickly.

To get the most out of the software I would suggest viewing the feature videos at http://www.logos.com/videos and the rest of them as you have time. I encourage you to pray before you study the Word (ask God to reveal Himself to you as you read and study His Word), whether it be a paper Bible or in Logos. I would also suggest that you set up a very basic layout for your Bible study (see the layout video), with your favorite Bible translation and the Bible Explorer (found under the Tools menu in the upper left corner). Open a new note to write down questions that you have about what you are reading.

Set up a daily reading plan (under the "File" menu in the upper left corner) and jump into the Word!

If you have questions about the software or about how to find something write a new post with the question so it will get noticed quickly.

May our heavenly Father richly bless you as you grow in His Word!

Let me also add that I would suggest two books to help get you started:  How to Read the Bible Book by Book and How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I have to say that the tutorial videos are absolutely incredible!  And, I can certainly add that I have been stunned by the number of really great features within the software.

The books by Wiersba are very enjoyable for me, but I wish that some Bonhoeffer had been included.  Is it a part of any of the larger packages?

This is just wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Joe, Bonhoeffer has been asked for, but I don't see any Bonhoeffer resources in Logos, yet. It's possible that there is a problem between those who hold copyright/publishing rights to his work and Logos. There is an old thread suggesting his works be published here:

    http://community.logos.com/forums/p/371/3632.aspx

You could add your name to that discussion, or send an email to suggest@logos.com

Thank you, Richard.  I am content to have all of these books to tackle that I already have!

Does anyone have a strong suggestion for anything in my library that is an in-depth treatment of the Reformation?  I have to admit that this is a fascinating subject for me.  I have even thought about ordering Diarmid MacCullough's book on same from Amazon.

For those who enjoy Bonhoeffer, Eric Metaxas's biography of him published earlier this year is very enjoyable.

    Thanks again... so much.

Search your Library for "Reformation" or "Church History" (with or without quotes). One thing that popped up is Philip Schaff's History of the Christian Church. Volumes 7 and 8 deal with the German and Swiss reformations (respectively).
