Little Journeys With Martin Luther
Church disunity is a lamentable fact, and we Lutherans have had a part in it. Sometimes this is for a theological reason. Sometimes it is for a theological reason that no one remembers. Sometimes it is for not so theological reasons...
About a century ago a Pastor of the Joint Synod of Ohio (William Nicholas Harley) wrote a story of Martin Luther coming back to life a few years earlier (c. 1898), searching for a Lutheran body with which to affiliate. It has him wandering around the United States, and being rejected (or rejecting) each one. In between these conclaves, he interacts with what was going on in the USA at the time. It is a fun mix of pastoral care as well as attacking the devil with humor - something Luther himself was fond of.
In the end, Harley offers some modest proposals on how we could work towards unity. While some may be dated, others may still have value today - if we are willing to listen to each other and honestly deal with each other.
About this edition - the source is http://archive.org/details/littlejourneyswi00harl. In the original, the only way of showing emphasis w a s b y a d d i n g s p a c e s, but since that is not normal in English, I have converted that emphasis to italics for all languages but the German. In the original, the German was in old black-face. I have maintained that by using Unifraktur Cook, available from http://unifraktur.sourceforge.net/cook.html.
I have also included some graphics from the original into the book. It is an intended feature, and so it would be a shame to waste title pages like this:
