I don't suppose switching to the beta channel would help this problem would it?

I doubt it would make an immediate difference. There's not been a beta release since the fixes Logos have told me they've made. More importantly, I've not seen this problem before, so they may not even be aware of it. But it would be good if a Mac user on the beta could confirm whether they have build problems.

I was using 5.2a Beta 5 (5.2.1.0054) when the problem introduced itself to me. That's the latest beta.

I've been told the endless recompiling on both platforms should be fixed in beta 6. But Dan and Liam's issue is a Mac-only problem where even the first compile fails through a missing temporary file.

Verbum 5.2 SR6 Unable to compile, is any other Mac Verbum user experiencing this? Attached are my log file for the error (tried twice both 86 errors and failed to compile).

The compiler is crashing — because a temporary file is missing. It's fair to say that this PB has exposed a number of bugs in Logos, but Logos have been great about fixing them and suggesting workarounds. Over the last few weeks I've had several emails from one of the guys who works on PBs, so I'll let him know about this problem too. Hopefully he can suggest a workaround and get it fixed in the next beta.

Thanks for the update on my issue, and thank you once again for undertaking this, I am sure as soon as I can use it it will be a very helpful resource.

Thanks Mark. This is good to know. The fix appears to be even more crucial for the Mac platform for the reason of no workaround available.

How do you personally feel about the quality of scholarship in the Wikipedia articles?

The good thing about Wikipedia is that it has many and varied contributors. The bad thing about Wikipedia is that it has many and varied contributors.

But the ultimate good thing about Wikipedia is this:  for every person who will contribute erroneous or egregiously biased articles or edits, there are probably 100 pedantic know-it-alls who are itching to correct it.

    God bless the pedantic know-it-alls.

After switching to the Beta channel the Dictionary compiled fine with no errors! It was a long wait though (took about 3 hours!).

Thanks again for this resource Mark! I'm comparing articles to the encyclopedias/dictionaries I have and the articles in this are for the most part much longer. It looks like this will be extremely helpful!

One of the interesting things about Wikipedia is that it insists that all articles are written from a neutral point of view (NPOV). This wouldn't be the case with any other Bible dictionary, which — depending on the editors/publishers — would be written from a certain perspective (perhaps 'Catholic' or 'evangelical', but at least 'trinitarian'). That is that all the articles need to be acceptable to all branches of Christianity. So you'll find Wikipedia less critical than AYBD, but also less evangelical that NBD.

    Mark,

Just out of curiousity where are you placing this dictionary in your prioritization ranking? I'm not sure where to place it. My current prioritization is #1 NBD, #2 LBD, #3 Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, and #4 Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, with some other specialized ones thrown in there. When it comes down to it I'll decide, but curious where you would place this resource in the mix?

    Thanks!!!

I've placed this dictionary almost at the bottom of my major dictionaries (currently I have AYBD, NBD, NDT, NDBT, followed by IVP's 'black' dictionaries, then various others such as BEB), one place above the Lexham Bible Dictionary. That means it's also above the smaller Bible dictionaries, and the general encyclopaedias like the Encylopedia of Christianity.

I think it has two particular strengths: (a) the sheer number of articles, and (b) it's unique point of view. In other words, I'll use it (a) to find things not in other resources, and (b) for an alternative perspective when I'm doing in-depth study. For both purposes it is best for me not to prioritize it too highly.

A question for you, Mark:  How do you personally feel about the quality of scholarship in the Wikipedia articles?  Do you trust what you read?  Or do you prefer, if possible, to compare its content with more trusted sources?  Just curious.

The bibliographies at the end of the articles may be more helpful than the articles themselves. Either way it is a good resource to have.

With the help of Wikipedia, I've created the Logos' largest encyclopaedia. It has nearly 18,000 articles and 25 million words, making it three times bigger than even the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary. If it was in print form, it would probably fill nineteen 1,000-page volumes.

    Wow: thank you, Mark.

It will be invaluable having this on the laptop when traveling overseas: no 'roaming' fees.

Your work with this (as with all things Logos) is very much appreciated.

Edit: Whew: took 1 hr 45 min to compile, on a Haswell i7 processor. Enormous! :-)

Thank for posting this Mark. I haven't got it to compile yet (on Verbum), but looking at the source makes me think it must be very useful.

Would you be willing to go into a little detail about how you complied it? How did you choose which headwords to include?

I ask because I'm considering doing something similar for Greek and Roman materials (especially since neither this nor this appear as though they'll ever make it into production), so any suggestions or shortcuts you might have would be very helpful! In any case, thanks again for all your work!

If you look at the introductory file (dcb-00.docx), there's an explanation there about how it was put together.

    Hi Mark,

    I'm running 5.2a SR-1 (5.2.1.0081).

Compiled with no errors & about 90 warnings, which I'm assuming don't account for the difficulty I'll ask about (but I'm reporting them just in case). The warnings were:

    1. Very many "Article ____ has only 1 characters", where ___ was the only variable
    2. Very many "Bad character in string 0XFFFD"
    3. Two "d~bible.19.__ is specified", where __ was either 42 or 90
    4. Three "Headword is empty."
    5. One "Unknown data type in use: topic+topics"
    6. One "Font 'DejaVu Sans' is specified but not installed or embedded. Is this a valid font name?"
    7. One "Setting font for 'DejaVu Sans' to 'Times New Roman' ".

I also followed your instructions near the forward of the resulting PB:

    1. Using the Topic Guide

    2. Personal Books don’t appear in the Topic section of a Topic Guide. To have the dictionary appear in your Topic Guide, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

      1. Add the dictionary to a collection (if there are other dictionaries missing from your Topic Guide, you could add them too).

      2. From the Guides menu, Make a new Guide template. Change the Template type to Topic, and then add all sections from the Topic Guide, or customise the sections if you wish.

      3. Now, add a Collections section, and specify the collection you created in step 1. You may like to place the collections section right under the main Topics section.

      4. Now, name your Guide My Topic Guide, and close the template. You’ll then be able to choose that new Guide from the Guides menu, whenever you wish.

Here's where I'm having difficulty. I've opened My Topic Guide (thank you for that!).

    1. Select the collection including DCB (manually added, since I've created a dynamic collection that prefers the phrase "Bible Dictionary").

    2. Key Passover into My Topic Guide.

    3. Result: DCB never appears in the hit list (even after completely expanding it), even though I can type in Passover & jump right to the article. DCB is found in the Library (if entire library is viewed) or if PB list is viewed.

    What did I do wrong?

    Thanks in advance...

    Grace & Peace,
    Bill

Sorry for the delay, Bill. I've been on holiday.

The reason Passover doesn't appear is because the article in DCB is entitled "Passover (Christian Holiday)", rather than just "Passover". Logos doesn't know that the two are equivalent. It's frequently a problem, I'm afraid (e.g. "Atonement" is "Atonement in Christianity").

It doesn't always occur, because Logos does know a number of topics are equivalent (that's what the LCV is for), so a Topic Guide for "Lord's Supper" will return the DCB article on "Eucharist". But Logos doesn't know about both examples above, so the right article isn't found.

Is the DCB supposed to show up in the topic section? Or only the collections section of the topic guide? Using various search inputs, I get results from DCB in the collections section, but not the topic section. Still OK?

Yes, that's correct. PB's won't show up in the topic section, which is why I suggested creating the Collections section for DCB and any other encyclopedia PBs you have.

Just saw this now - thanks so much!

And... I second the suggestion to make a Wikipedia Art resource. I have at times used Wikipedia to gather art from artists I appreciate, like Blessed Fra Angelico. Of course, apart from this being difficult to put together, tag, etc., it might be quite a few Terabytes of data, especially if the high res versions were harvested.
