New Jerusalem Bible SCANDAL

The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) is a Catholic translation of the Bible published in 1985. The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) has become the most widely used Roman Catholic Bible outside of the United States. It has the imprimatur of Cardinal George Basil Hume.

So why are people who live outside the United States, i.e. Britain, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Europe not allowed to download the NEW JERUSALEM BIBLE from LOGOS or VERBUM?

Yes I know there are different publishers US and UK, but surely Logos, Verbum and the publishers should able to come an agreement.

This does not make sense.

My guess is it is a licensing issue. Logos/Verbum was probably only given the rights to sell in North America or possibly only the USA. If they had a choice I a sure they would like global rights to all books.

Perhaps the holder(s) of international rights is protesting the British Guy Fawkes Day? [;)] As an American who has the NJB, I'm more concerned that we can't get the Jerusalem Bible that is frequently used in lectionaries. [:'(] I will admit that Catholic resources appear to have more international rights issues than other blocks of resources ... and that does genuinely cause problems for the non-American user.

I did not realize it was restricted. I live outside US and Canada and I have a license for this bible which I acquired many years ago when I purchase the old LLS Catholic Scholars Pack. If you could get your hands on a copy of this you'd also get a license for the Jerome Bible Commentary - but I don't like your chances of finding one these days: Catholic Scholar's Pack. Licensing restrictions didn't seem to be an issue back in those days.

And there is the rub dual copyrights ownership. Doubleday has the rights to licence products for the North American market only. DLT own the licence rights for the rest of the world. In an ideal world Logos would get distribution rights from both companies and pay the royalty portion on to each company based on the location of the purchasing customer. This really seems to be mostly an electronic rights thing since I have seen DLT published editions of the NJB in Canadian book stores. Maybe there can one day be a glorious international ruling that strikes down laws that keep books of electronic media / restricts distribution. This is most likely never going to happen but with googles digitizing everything ever printed maybe there can be some hope.

Just throwing this in.

Back in '09 it seems that Phil G address the issue in some respects (whether active third party licensing trumped access or just the time it takes tracking down the appropriate license holder??). The only reason I mention it is that it has been a five+ year issue for the Jerome Biblical Commentary that still hasn't been resolved (and maybe there isn't any "in process" attempt to [:(]), but yet there has been some progress because we have the Vatican II Documents so some things may be going on in the background.... a status/explanation of the hurdles in licensing might be better addressed by Phil Gons or someone else at Logos.

John, we lost the rights to the Jerome Biblical Commentary, and the Vatican II Documents were in a third-party product from Liturgical Press in 1997 that has since been retired. We’re looking into resurrecting both of these at some point, but no guarantees that that will happen.

Much as you do when buying numbers of pairs of US jeans. Or when you buy a parcel of physical books - might get a bit heavy on the flight though

The determination of the residency of international buyers may com from

the address in the user profile (possibly used for delivery of physical goods and calculation of sales tax)
the country association of the credit card number
the IP-address of the client used to visit the site

only the third would be affected by a different location - however the laptop would not be needed in the US to buy a resource (actually, the user neither, since there are VPN solutions that allow browsing the web with an US IP-address from remote, used by people who want to view internet-broadcasted TV or sports that is geo-IP restricted).

I always dreamed from coming over to the US, visiting a used bookstore and finding the old Libronix CDs with BAGD, full JB and Jerome's commentary... probably none of this will happen.

I can't give specifics or promise that we'll ultimately be successful, but we are actively pursuing international rights for the NJB. As you can imagine, multiple rights-holders makes things more complicated for us.
