Advent and Christmas reading
What are all of you reading and studying this coming season?
As I do every year, I will be reading through Bossuet's Meditations for Advent (alas, not in Verbum yet!). I'm also reading Pope Benedict XVI's The Blessing of Christmas and the Daughters of St. Paul's Advent devotional. I was delighted to see the Verbum edition of Pope Benedict's book has all the illustrations.

I read a handful of the chapters from BXVI's Blessing of Christmas a few years back and shared the brief but very beautiful "Chapter 5: A New Star" with my students the week prior to Christmas break that year. Benedict's meditation on silence would find a natural complement in Cardinal Sarah's recent work by that name.
On my end, I picked up Malcolm Guite's volume of poetry Waiting on the Word when I heard him speak a few months back. It appears he'll be posting a good number of the poems with a recording of his reading over at his blog.
For more sustained spiritual reading, I'm working through a few chapters a day in St. John of Avila's Audi, Filia. I was largely unfamiliar with this most recent doctor ecclesiae, but am finding it a tremendous read. He frequently pulls on Augustine, Jerome, Chrysostom, et al. It strikes me as a work that would serve as a worthwhile choice for Advent or Lent.
