Resource Text Selection Menu does not allow copying a phrase

When I select a word or phrase, the Resource Text Selection Menu offers Copy Bible Verse, but not the text that I highlighted. The list of new features implied that the Copy option would be available on this menu.

The phrase has to be more than 5 words.

I don't see the point of this minimum. The Copy option should be available no matter how large or small the selection.

Hmmm. We are going to get a crowded Selection menu to replace the crowded Context menu!

The intent is to include functions more relevant to the amount of text selected, and it will always be a compromise. Someone wants Add Note by Reference, which would belong to the menu for both selection criteria. Perhaps Copy could replace Search; which is also on the Double-click and Triple-click Action Program Settings?

In my mind, the Selection menu adds confusion rather than clarity. I don't see the point of having 2 pop-up menus. If I want to work with a selection, I just choose Selection from the Content menu and I have a whole range of choices that are far greater than the Selection menu.

I do appeciate that one option on the menu is "Turn off Selection menu in Program Settings."

I've come to regard it that way. The suggestions/discussion for Notes by Reference vs Notes by selection shows how confusing that it can be, in addition to the arbitrary length of a selection determining what features are available.

I agree the menu needs some further refinement. I believe additional refinements are in the works.

There's a good chance that this menu isn't for you. A surprisingly large number of people don't even know about the right-click context menu. They never think to right click. It's not even a category they have, so they're highly unlikely to ever discover it and all the power that lives there. But almost everyone selects text. That means with the selection menu we'll have a chance to (1) introduce them to some of the most common actions to take in resources on a selection and (2) expose them to the existence of the context menu and information panel.

If it's not for you, that's okay. But I do think there is a group who will benefit greatly from it.

We agree. This change is in the works. We were trying to be smart and offer the top few most likely actions the user might want based on their selection, but we missed the mark with this one.

I’d want consistent menu items, regardless of the length of the selection. Showing different options would be confusing, as well as frustrating when the software guessed wrong.

In the stable release, when you add an anchor, it defaults to selection. Default behavior and consistency is good. I don’t want the program trying to guess which option I might want.

The new website design made some similar choices such as not showing (included in) collections we own, not showing sale prices for resources we own, and so on. Consistency is important. The site should show the same information, regardless of ownership.

Rearranging menu actions is inefficient, because the option we want is no longer in the same visual location.

Wouldn’t it be better to make the selection menu more usable by more people, rather than thinking it exists for a different class of users?

    Phil,

just as a way of feedback: I use the right-click menu very often and like its power. Since I highlight a lot, I'm glad we have the new selection menu as it allows me to do this (when I'm using the most lately used highlighters) without switching from the mouse to the keyboard.

This has been changed in 8.7 RC 1.
