Beta 2 Release Notes
Logos 4 Beta 2 Release Notes
Important Information
- The first time you launch Beta 2, it will check for resource updates from the server. These updates could be very large depending on what you have purchased. Until the updates are downloaded and installed, some features (such as Biblical People) will not work properly.
- All locally-stored documents (collections, favorites, bookmarks, reading plans, notes, etc.) will be deleted in this release. If you have been syncing with the server they should all be downloaded and restored automatically. If you have not been syncing, you will lose that data. Seehttp://community.logos.com/forums/t/1291.aspx for information on a workaround.
- Clippings documents have been updated for forward compatibility with resource updates. Clippings documents created with previous releases are updated, though if loaded after the cited resource has been updated, the citation may not report the original page/reference range of the clipping.
- The internal format of Handouts and Word Finds have changed in Beta 2. If you have multiple machines, do not create Handouts or Word Finds on your Beta 2 machine until all your machines have been upgraded to Beta 2; otherwise, your Beta 1 machines may crash downloading the new files.
New Features
- “Use Internet” setting in “Program Settings” to disable automatic internet use. (Note: Reading Lists and some other minor features may continue to use the Internet even if this is set to No.)
- Added context menu command to My Library to open in a floating window
- Added “scan” command to import resources into Logos 4; type “scan c:\path\here” into the command bar and restart the app
- Resource updates are automatically detected by Logos 4 and downloaded; several new and updated media, reverse interlinear, pronunciations, infographics, and timelines resources will be delivered via this mechanism. (Note: only new 4.0 resources are currently delivered via this system; we are not yet delivering all the LLS and LBXLLS resources you have unlocked in the past.)
- Added pop-up “alerts” for important messages; these can be disabled in Program Settings
- Ctrl+Shift+Left and Ctrl+Shift+Right navigate to the previous/next equivalent resource (e.g., in NA27)
- Drag a hyperlink from a resource window to create a new panel (with the target of the link)
- Visual filter document supports multiple search modes and mode-corresponding autocompletion.
Bug Fixes
- Bible Word Study can be launched from Apostolic Fathers resource
- Bible Word Study navigation box says “Word”, not “Reference”
- Biblical People, Places, Things show the current person, place, thing in the tab/window title
- Biblical Things Passage Guide section shows other things, not just a list of commas
- Changing Bibles in the Exegetical Guide while it is running uses the newly-selected Bible, doesn’t crash

- Context menu for People or Places shows destination article title
- Context menu should restrict itself to a size that will fit on the screen
- Custom Bible reading ranges can be deleted
- Footnote markers are no longer missing from text copied from a resource
- Guide Template editor doesn’t have two “Definition” sections

Known Issues
Issues that are new to Beta 2 are in bold text.
General
- Some advanced resource prioritization features (e.g., “from this resource”) are not respected in all areas across the application. (For example: prioritizations using “from this resource” should work when clicking a link in a resource, but may not work from the context menu.)
- Many resources have not yet been rebuilt to work optimally with Logos 4. Some problems this can cause are:
- Non-English Bibles & Commentaries not being navigable by Bible reference.
- English KeyLinks going to Greek or Hebrew lexicons.
- You cannot execute a KeyLink from or select text in most of the reports, guides, search panels, etc.
- There are issues related to changing font size throughout the app.
Bible Word Study
- Hit counts in the “Textual Searches” section are incorrect.
Biblical Facts
- Results in the Biblical People, Places, and Things panels (and Passage Guide sections) may be incorrect until the library has been re-indexed.
- You will receive a message that resources are missing until all the updates for Beta 2 are downloaded and installed.
- Information displays are incomplete for items in the Biblical People, Biblical Places, and Biblical Things tools
- Only a few maps are available in Biblical Places, and they are not fully functional
Cited By
- Cited By only finds results that exactly match your query (instead of also finding intersecting/overlapping references).
Guides
- In Exegetical Guide the Word by word section only generates results for first verse of a range of references.
- Before performing a guide search the 'Add' menu will appear blank when you open it
- Scrolling your mousewheel when mousing-over some results or section links will not scroll the guide
Indexer
- Download progress is not displayed correctly by the Indexer; the total size will decrease as files complete downloading.
- The Indexer may display a Logos 4 icon in the taskbar notification area with no tooltip. If this happens, right-click the icon and choose “Install Updates” to install new resources.
- The Indexer only displays a menu of options if its icon is right-clicked; it provides no feedback if left-clicked.
My Library
- Resource prioritization is not synced between computers.
Passage Analysis
- Morph River returns empty results for reverse interlinears.
Performance
- Many application areas are unoptimized; seeing a “black screen” while reports are generating is not uncommon.
- Indexing takes a very long time.
- Indexing resources with associated reverse interlinears takes a very, very long time.
Resources
- The “Equivalent Resources” control in the resource panel toolbar is just a small gray triangle (with no label); clicking it again does not hide the list of equivalent resources.
- Interlinear (not reverse interlinear) lines cannot be turned off.
- The reverse interlinear lines that have been hidden are not remembered when the application is closed.
- The reverse interlinear pane does not track the active reference.
- Resources with multiple navigation references do not always show relevant results in the New Tab tab.
- Pressing the space bar doesn’t scroll down a page.
Search
- Indexing must completely finish before you can search the library for the first time.
- Graph Bible Search Results do not match the results of the original search if “Match all word forms” is unchecked.
- Search may not respect/ignore Greek accents, Hebrew vowels appropriately.
- Searching all bibles for common terms can crash the app in certain views.
- Displaying search results from interlinear resources is slow. This particularly impacts Morph search results.
- Searches with many results may cause the result page selector to be clipped.
- Morph searching will return no results if the accents on the lemma are incorrect; the lemma helper in the Morph Search Panel suggests the wrong lemmas, but initiating the search from the context menu in a resource should work.
- Syntax searching doesn't always work and sometimes may crash
Setup
- The installation folder cannot be customized; Beta 2 forces the application and resources to be installed to the system drive.
- The Beta 2 Installer will remove the Logos 4 shortcut from your desktop (but will leave a shortcut on the Start Menu).
Startup
- The startup screens have not been finalized (in terms of both workflow and art).
Visual Cue
- The visual cue may display in an unexpected location.
Visual Design
- The following features are missing final art:
- Graph Bible Search Results
- Passage Analysis
- All printable items
- All read-aloud features
- Equivalent resources button
- Reading Lists tool

No download yet here.
Still no option to hide or delete resources? Sniff sniff. [:'(]

It is now downloading between 500 and 600 MBs of resource updates and BTW, I really like the update to the layouts section.

Regarding the resource path, will this work on the Mac with a shared folder?
If yes, will updated resources be sent the the default path, or to my Mac path?
If to my Mac path, will the 4.0 resources be usable in my Mac 1.0?The "scan" feature is a one-time import. It copies resources from the folder you specify into Logos 4's automatically-managed folder. It does not store new resources there.
It is not the same as adding a new "Resource Path" in LDLS3; that folder is never checked again (after it is scanned once).

The joy of indexing revisited... Not really! 30 minutes later still a long ways to go... I can see this as a detractor more and more if there is a reindex every update...

I see this as more of a bug fix than a known issue [;)]

Quick Q:
I fired the app up and downloaded the 24MB file but didn't realize that more data was coming until I read the section on "more downloading" above...
The problem is when I hovered the mouse; it said "2% of 1.1GB downloading"
Yikes!! I'm at work...they'd shoot me for downloading 1.1GB, so I cancelled the download and V4 is now indexing my library.
Whew...now on to the actual question: How do I restart the download when at home?

This is just another example as to why this should not be totaly automatic. The user needs to have a hand in controlling what the application is doing. The cloud can't make these sort of interpretations.

Andrew...
Didn't I just have a hand in controlling the download [:D]

Downloading on two systems. Er, kinda. My desktop is downloading and installing my laptop hasn't even seen it yet, but I'm trying to make it happen with a few restarts.
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Robert,
But what if you hadn't noticed that the download was taking place? I love the ease of downloads and updates but I agree that the user should have control over this. Offhand I don't know of any other software that updates itself without your knowledge unless you have first told it to do so.
For me this is not much of an issue, I want Logos to update any time it sees something, but I would like to know I have control.

Chris...
It was my attempt at a bit of humor....sorry it didn't land....
I the Logos updates should be akin to the "updates are available for your machine" thing like Microsoft.

Yeah, it's making me hesitate about buying more resources. I've got a few small resources in my cart and a couple of other things that I'd like to buy, but I'm holding off.
I can justify the re-index for the financial layout for and quantity and quality of NICOT, but for a small single volume. Too much pain for not enough gain.

Chris, Google Chrome updates in the background with no user input - it bothered me at first, but it has become my one of my favorite things about it. Then again it doesn't "index" for 12 hours after it downloads an update:-)

Logos updates should be akin to the "updates are available for your machine" thing like Microsoft.
I use that on my netbook because I'm often on limited connections and I wait until I'm home. For itunes, and a number of other programs, I like to check out whether the incremental upgrades are worth the hassle and bandwidth.
While we have a first step with Beta 2, I'd really love to know if there's now a roadmap in place for a proper user-controllable updating procedure.
Will we have the chance to purchase a DVD with our old resources re-done for Logos 4.0 or will we have to download them all when they become available and re-index our libraries with every book that's updated?

Update to Beta 2 ran well, although I changed timezone to pacific GMT-9 . Changed back now to South African time zone. The big problem as I see it is the re indexing....bought a new resource and the system did a full re-index. Now I did an update and the system again re-indexed all resources.....more than 3200 of them. Takes 5 1/2 hours to run.......in this time I can do no searches etc. This makes me scared of purchasing a resource, which I often do when I am busy doing an essay or something for my studies, and I need it quite urgently. If I am busy and I have to wait 6 hours for a re-index then I will loose a lot of productive study time. I have now had 3 re-index down times in the last few days. Quite frustrating.
Maybe my learning curve is a bit slow and there is some way to bypass this.....will get to know the system better soon [:)]

Whew...now on to the actual question: How do I restart the download when at home?
In Beta 2, there is no manual control to resume the downloads, but there is a somewhat awkward back door: The program will check the download status every time it starts (after about a minute or so, because we don't want it to impact the initial startup time of the application). The fact that you explicitly cancelled isn't yet logged by the program, so it will give the resource a couple of chances to appear (so we don't needlessly re-download it in case that it was about to be discovered the next time you ran the application) before it re-schedules the download.
Anyway, to cut a long story short: Run Logos 4, let it run for about five minutes, then close it. Repeat this a couple of times until you see the indexer icon appear (or if it's already running, its tooltip change to "Logos is downloading updates").

Download went well, Installation OK, indexing just great, I was able to work normally on my notebook, stopped once for closing notebook for going to the office and continued there, no problem. I was able to switch back to the Czech form of date and time (what always crashed Logos and Indexer before), all works well. Thank you for fixing many bugs. Keep on the good work.
Blessings

This is a second and slightly more irate posting about the auto downloads and re-indexing that are not controlled by the user, but by the program. In theory this is wonderful but by explaining what happened to me yesterday and today might make the situation more clear. Although I still run L3, I wish to point out how someone who is new to Logos would feel if they were using 4 only.
This afternoon I left my laptop for about 30 min, when returning I noticed that L4 is busy with a download of about 1.5gig. This is half my monthly cap. (I have purchased more bandwidth to accommodate this update) to remain loyal to the beta testing program. However this means that my Logos is out of action for a very long time for the second time today.
The first re-index yesterday evening took 5.5 hours and was precipitated by the purchase of a resource. That was yesterday.
Today the first re-index (which took 5.5 hours) was precipitated by the auto update to beta 2 done early this morning.
Now I have a very large download, that should take the better part of several hours and the once again a re-index. God forbid that tomorrow when I try and work again, my prepub orders are shipped, or even worse a prepub is shipped daily or every second day [:)] . Somehow L4 should be optimized so that this does not occur. If I had some sort of control over the download times etc, then I can plan to run them in idle times, but the way it is now my life is being controlled unconsciously [:)] by Logos in the States, and at most inopportune times to the end user. I realize that there is a pause function in the re-indexing but once it starts there is no searching, and this is L4's greatest asset, that is now out of action. Today for example at least 13 hours out of 24.
I still however do enjoy the program, but the situation in South Africa is very different to the States. Our bandwidth speeds are much slower (512k), the costs are enormous (if I did this using 3G technology) just the downloads from Logos so far on this beta testing would have cost me around US$100. DSL is cheaper and as someone explained it is around US$12 per gig.

The Beta 2 Installer will remove the Logos 4 shortcut from your desktop (but will leave a shortcut on the Start Menu).

Jon,
The installer actually detects if you've deleted the desktop shortcut and won't reinstall it when you update to a newer version. If you don't delete the shortcut, it should leave it there when you update. That's the broken part...
Anyone who would like to have the shortcut back on the desktop can just copy the shortcut from the Start menu to the desktop like this: Make sure your desktop is visible, find the shortcut in the Start menu, then, while holding down the Ctrl key, click and drag it, dropping it on the desktop.

Ctrl+Shift+Left and Ctrl+Shift+Right navigate to the previous/next equivalent resource (e.g., in NA27)
Just tried this. Very cool! Thank You! So far, It doesn't seem to work on English Bibles though. Besides Greek Bibles, where else might this work?
Indexing takes a very long time.
Yes it does.
Question: Does the indexer have to rebuild the entire index each time a new resource is added (as in Logos 2), or will the indexer modify/append to an existing index (like Google desktop)?
Request: If the indexer must be rebuilt each time, consider an app,or a command line switch (e.g. logos4 \r) to enable us to rebuild the index on a user defined schedule, or initiated with Task Scheduler (through Windows). That way, users can delay this intense and somewhat disruptive process until later, index at night, or while they're not using L4.

I love the idea that Logos is going to go get the files I may not have on my system! Thank you!
Question related to this:
What about resources that Libronix no longer has rights to? It's an odd example but for instance the "Atlas Book of Printable pages" which is a collection of model train layouts etc. (AFAIK the only catalog ever produced in Libronix format). I picked it up from the Atlas company a few years back. If I lose that installation disk and find that it's not on my Hard drive at some point, will Logos be able to download that - or will it be lost forever with a license there, but no resource?
Honestly I'm not too worried about my model railroad catalog, but what of other resources?
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Bryan, I had the LOGOS v4 icon in the top section of the Start Menu. I wasn't expecting the shortcut on the desktop to disappear, but then I suddenly had to Logos v4 icons on my Start Menu. The old one where the lnk was no longer valid and the new one. If it wasn't for a subtle change in the icon image I would have had to play around with the two links to determine which is the functional one.
I am all good now, but a bit perplexed at first. Also will the help file have a "What's New" later on?

I suggested an update management system which would give you control over when and which updates were to install, the indexer may also be given more settings, like the one you suggested, and they would most likely go into this management system.
