Requesting Scripts for Apostles of Denial PBB
I'm requesting that Denise or someone else who has the skills to do this, make scripts I would need to turn Apostles of Denial by Edmond Charles Gruss into a fully embedded PBB. It's an apologetic work directed at JW's and Watchtower practice and theology. The book is freely distributed on the web by permission of the author and I've found it on a few different websites. I'm hoping Denise or someone else can make scripts I need and steps on how to use them. Thanks.
Here is a downloadable link.

Try downloading the free epub version into Calibre. Convert to Docx. Autoformat in word. That will get you 90% of the way and maybe good enough.

Autoformat?

Try this. It's worth having and adding to Quick access on your Ribbon---depending what version of Word you use:

Looks pretty dubious. I found some instructions online but they are unuseable. This is purely for basic formatting. I think I actually already made this PBB in January. Basic only. It's not going to have any references i'm sure. But I don't see the options he's referencing. I really don't want to install some strange looking addon.

Actually no. The table of contents is a complete mess and is also unusable. My luck.

Autoformat is a built-in Word feature. You simply need to enable it if it is disabled. Adding the shortcut to your ribbon may be helpful as well.
Autoformat will make some documents almost perfect. It occasionally creates havoc. Others it simply improves but does not perfect. All depends what you start with. You can create other macros or VB code to refine the process but effectiveness is also document specific. I just hand-build search and replace scripts on the run. Probably no one can really do that for you unless they want to spend hours on each document.
I prefer to live with less than perfect documents or wait for Logos to produce good ones. Then I remember just how much value Logos adds to books we buy from them.

GaoLu, how important is this embedding? I quasi-figured out how to have the table of contents built. I have to convert an epub into a pdf, and then turn the pdf into a docx. But what about things which aren't monographs? What about the innumerable cross-references in the various parts of Logos?

The value of embedding depends on the document you are importing. Logos figures out Bible references and that is about all. It does a fair job of generating a TOC if your Word document is well-formatted.
I don't know why you convert from ePub to PDF. Seems like the wrong direction to go. Occasionally Calibre would make a better conversion to HTML than doc, but that was the past. Converting directly to Docx is probably best now as far as I know. The innumerable cross-references in most cases are not easily automated by us mortals. That is why Logos pays smart people big bucks. I am willing to shell out a few bucks for all their hard work. In most cases, I am not willing to automate or hand-code it myself.0 -
Because epub to docx directly doesn't generate bookmarks which is what logos turns into a table of contents.

I use heading styles to generate the Logos table of contents.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

MJ, by that do you mean you do a search and replace to designate the different headings? Or is their a different way?

I'm off to kind of a bad start in hindsight since this ebook has been made via OCR so it's full of errors. As a result I'm giving up on that one for the moment. Some trickery with converting back and forth is getting docx file with headings. I don't know how.

I tried that but I think I'm doing it wrong.

I actually find it faster to just scroll through the document and apply the styles. That way I get better consistency.

Autoformat will sometimes apply styles. Sometimes--certainly not always--it does a great job. Try it. If it works, great. If not, apply styles manually. Search and replace also works but takes some skill as it can introduce problems. In my experience applying styles manually is subject to user error as well.
Just start with autoformat.

Must admit I have never tried that and it looks quite promising, even if it doesn't do it perfectly but only get's me started. Thanks.

I found I can manually insert headings. More tedious than I'd like. Unfortunately it will mess up each chapter name. I have to manually fix it by changing the font and / or spacing and other stuff. Anyway the book I posted is OCR and not accurate so i'm not going to try to convert it properly anymore since doing so won't help when the characters are wrong.

The epub version is often best.

How are you getting such good results with epubs and calibre?

I have always wondered if I use Calibre optimally. There are so many settings I really have no clue about. Do you have any recommendations on necessary settings to use with Calibre converting pdf or Epub to docx?
