How to delete a personal book
Having come from WS, I can only wonder why I didn't try Logos years ago. Love it! I would ask for consideration to be able to delete "Personal Books" I have created. I tried to bring in a doc file from WS and accidentally put it in "Personal Books" and now its frozen there but all the references are linked back to WS and thus doesn't work. And I can't delete it.
So, in Logos 9, I would ask consideration be given to being able to delete a "Personal Book" (i.e. Tools->Personal Books) that I have created. Maybe there's a way already and I haven't found it?
Thanks

cshover already answered.
But from wiki.logos.com (a good user-supported manual):
"The normal method of deleting PB’s is via the Personal Books tool (right click + Delete). It removes the book
from Library and from your Resources folder. However, the only way to remove uploaded books is to Hide them.""If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes." B. Lincolm 1999.

How long ago did they add that? (right click + Delete)

A while. But the issue goes all the way back to PBs introduction (6-7 yrs ago), when the tool-PB didn't delete the compiled PB. So, for a long time, you had to battle it, with Hide. Apparently, delete now deletes (99% per Carla), unless FL has got a hold of it (upload). Then, hide again.

I called the customer service to delete it from my Library, but the answer was it is not possible. Perhaps in Logos 9 may make it possible.

Just create a new book that you do want over the top of the one you don’t want. Replace the document and name with new info.

Perhaps in Logos 9 may make it possible.
There are solid logical/technical reasons for this limitation. I would not expect users to move it into high priority for many years.

Now I am curious....
Consider that a personal book must have a unique id in order to support notes, highlighting, URL links . . .
Now consider a remove and rebuild after a hard disk corruption ... it must retain the same unique id for the notes etc. to work
Now consider a real delete ... and finding ALL links to the id (including external word documents, PDF's ... when their URL fails you need some clue as to what they were trying to link to ....
Now consider an old device that's been unused for a couple of years and therefore has not had the delete synced to it ...
Now consider the accidental reuse of a "deleted" PB id by another user or resource ...
You should be getting the idea that a true delete is a very, very messy process that takes significant resources. Now ask me what I want to spend those resources on ... bugs, polishing, and enhancements will keep FL busy for a long time before I'll want to spend the resources on a PB delete.

Thank you MJ. Smith for the clarification.

I think you exaggerate the "issue".
Consider temporary resources when they are removed from your license - they will leave behind the same mess of unresolved Notes, URL's, but you get warnings that the resource is "no longer in Library". Just delete the Notes, as they are still listed against the resource title (URL's you discover along the way).
Now, you can manually delete non-uploaded PB's from your computers and leave unresolved links. The issue is with Uploaded PB's, as Faithlife won't remove their "license", and they keep on being downloaded when you delete the compiled file.

I believe you misunderstood me. Temporary resources do not create the same problems because they are permanent Logos resources ... Logos retains knowledge of them whether or not an individual has them. So Logos "knows" the Notes, URL's etc although your installation does not have them. Personal books are not permanent Logos resources so Logos must create "permanence" through not letting go of the unique identifier.

- Then would you recommend NOT creating a new book over the top (as a replacement) of an old one?
- Could that leave a mess of orphan records that exist forever?
- If so, how much does that matter?

The received wisdom is that this is still the way that causes least trouble.
Could that leave a mess of orphan records that exist forever?
There don't seem to be reports of it causing problems.
I wonder if Faithlife could help by making a 'Test' PB available for download. It could contain a paragraph or two formatted for the various types of resource and contain examples of each of the various 'styles'. This would act as a reference for those creating PBs and a document that could be saved over PBs that the original compiler are now ashamed of.

LearnLogos.com has a PB training available and when you take that training, they give you docx files for each of the different types of books you can create and you can compile those templates as personal books so you always have them in LOGOs when you need them or you can just keep them as Word docs.
Thanks, Carla

I don't think there is any essential difference. A 'permanent' Logos resource still has a unique identifier which can be reused if they choose (but they often release a major update as a 'new' resource; with a different identifier). Broken links leave behind the same trail of identifiers that are either resolved or not, whether they be deleted 'temporary' FL resources, 'permanent' FL ones whose license was revoked, hidden resources, or PB's that were deleted.

I don't think I will use this feature. There seems to be too many issues with it.
FaithLife should rather remove this function completely if it is not fully functional.

There would be a huge outcry should personal books be removed. Simply look through the Files thread of the forums to see how heavily it is used and how dependent some users are on it since early versions of Logos. On the other hand, you are correct that some people do not use it at all because they have no need or it doesn't meet their need. Should you find you need this feature in the future, some back to the forums and we will answer your questions to help you meet your needs.

I disagree completely with your statement. It does not mean that you don't want it and others do the same. One of the most I am glad with logos is with the feature of Personal Bible that I can use my Amharic and Tigrinya Bibles for readings and studies. As many of you know I have requested many times to Faithlife to integrate them in Logos Software , but after Faithlife has made it possible to use them using the Pesonal Books I am satisfied. You can deleete it if you don't like it. But to suggest that Logos shoud remove the feature is an acceptable and not fair.

Other than uploading a replacement, is there some type of technical workaround to delete personal books?
Even altering a file on disk or something.

no!

M J has given you the accurate if taciturn response.
I am wondering if you have a problem with the standard solution of uploading a blank replacement which is so troublesome that the nightmare of attempting to alter the 'files on a disk' would be a preferable option.
Of course altering files on a disk on a discrete machine is unlikely to affect the files held on the cloud.

I still would love to see an option to delete uploaded files.

Use the same PB but use a blank docx file, Build and then Upload (
Alternatively, you could change it to be a useful Header for your Prioritization list or another type of PB altogether (metadata and file) - but Upload it at least once.
