BUG: Sermon Manager export function not working
I'm running the latest beta, with MS Office Home and Student 2019.
I can't get Sermon Manager to export anything to either Word or Excel.
With a series selected, I click "Send to new Word document." Word opens but the only thing that appears is the text "Sermon Manager."
I click "Send to new Excel document." Sometimes Excel appears to open but then immediately closes. Sometimes it opens but with no actual workbook opened.
With Word or Excel open, "Paste into open document" has the same behaviour.
Copy to clipboard doesn't appear to work either. When I go to paste into Excel - nothing. When I paste into Word just the "Sermon Manager" text.
When I "Save file as Spreadsheet," and then attempt to open that file, Internet Explorer opens with some weird stuff...
Basically, nothing works for me!!
Am I doing it wrong? Have I missed a step?
Thanks!

It seems, you need to update the default assignment of XML-files from being opened by Internet Explorer to Excel

Thanks! Windows doesn't seem to want me to do that, though. There's no option to select Excel next to XML files. There are a bunch of other apps, and then "Look for an app in the Microsoft Store."
Do you know of a way to circumnavigate that?!
And, would this solve the other issues as well, or just the XML one?
Thanks again!

OK, I think I've fixed the XML issue with Right click .xml > properties > Opens with: Windows 11 > Change to Excel > Apply
Thanks for your help NB! I can at least now get Sermon Manager exported into Excel with that workaround. All the other issues remain.

All the above issues are still present in 9.3 beta.
Save as Spreadsheet (XML) is no longer working either. I get the following error in Excel when opening the document:
Opening that log lists:

Hm. The XML I just got from Verbum 9.3 Beta 2 opens without any issue in my Excel 2016 (the rtf from Save To Word only has the header line "Homily Manager", as does a Word 2016 document from Send To Word). Are you free to share the xml here in the forums? Otherwise maybe send it to FL. But it looks like it can't read the date data.

OK, the dating issue seems to be causing the problem.
When I export my most recent series, all with the correct dates, it saves and opens in Excel without any issues.
But, earlier I was saving all sermons in the Sermon Manager, some of which have no dates at all assigned, and some of which appear to have the date "1 Jan 1". It seems Excel doesn't like one or both of these.
Here's the XML file with all sermons included:
(Also, I meant beta 2, not beta 3!)
Thanks.

Yep. Excel can't handle dates prior to Jan 1, 1900. I opened the xml with Notepad++ and simply changed the three 0001-01-01 dates to 2001-01-01 and Excel will open it just fine (great that your version of Excel gave detailed error messages for the faulty data, mine just refused to open the file prior to my correction). The updated file is here: 3755.7633.Sermon Manager_ALL.update.xml
It's a strange thing that most information is just character strings, but the dates are strictly formatted (don't try to export the xml of a preaching series emulating when it was preached e.g. by Martin Luther, John Wesley or Charles Spurgeon and working in Excel).

Thanks NB.
I wonder if anyone else is having these problems, or if anyone from FL has spotted this thread yet?!

Richard,
It seems like some issues are no longer present for you and some are. Are you still having trouble saving as an XML file, this should open up in Excel? The date format needs to be Month, day, and year. Can you summarize what issues you are still experiencing?

Hi Philana.
Thanks for your response. Most of the issues above are still present. I can save as an XML file and open it in Excel IF the dates are correct, as you say.
But I still can't:
- Save as Rich Text and then open in Word (just gives the Sermon Manager heading)
- Copy to clipboard (just gives the Sermon Manager heading in Word, nothing in Excel)
- Send to a new document (Word or Excel)
- Paste into open document (Word or Excel)
I feel like this is an issue at my end rather than Logos? Happy to provide whatever you need to check!

This issue may be similar to Richard's so I thought I would add it to the thread
I've just tried an export but when looking at the resulting document in Excel, the date information is not displayed correctly.
I know the date format in the XML file does not match what Philana mentioned but that is what came out of the Sermon Manager!
Is this because I am initially entering the dates in UK time format (Day / Month / Year)?

Same here!! That would make a lot of sense.

If you tell Excel that this column is a date, it will show in the format you want. Internally, Excel stores dates as integers i.e. a count of days starting from Jan 1, 1900.

Thanks Mick that works.
Now, however, when I export all of my sermons (as opposed to just this year's) I see the same error Richard mentioned above (https://community.logos.com/forums/p/198584/1151261.aspx#1151261) and it may well be due to some sermons not having correct date fields (there was some issue over dates during one of the betas and I haven't got round to tidying it up)

Graham, can you export in other ways other than XML? E.g. "Send to new document"?

No that doesn't seem to do anything - I'll need to look into if further.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your summary. I've let the developer know the issues you've reported. Thanks for reporting them.

Hi Richard,
You can also export as 'csv' format (comma separated format). To do this:
- Select save as spreadsheet
- In the file save dialog, change the file type from XML to csv

That's really helpful. And can confirm that it works! Thanks Joe!

We fixed these issues in 9.3 Beta 3, in some cases we had to remove the option because of incompatibility with Microsoft Word.

I'm afraid not!!
Still the same behaviour with "Send to new" and "Paste into" - nothing happens. Excel occasionally looks like it's opening but then closes straight away. Sometimes opens but with no Worksheet. And pasting into an open doc does absolutely nothing.
I still think Graham is onto something with the British date format?!?
Is anyone in the US having similar issues?

This is really weird because Send to works for me and the developer who fixed this. What version of Excel are you using?

"Paste into" - nothing happens.
For me, it created a new sheet in the currently open document.

Richard,
Can you also reproduce these issues and ZIP and post the entire log folder to this thread?

Richard,
Are you able to save it as an .XML file? Can you open that within Excel? Would you be willing to share it with us? This might let us take a look at your data.

I see the same as Richard: Send to new and Send to open Excel both won't work. Save as Spreadsheet (i.e. XML) does work - and Excel opens it just fine. My files is here: 6378.Homily Manager2.xml
(called Homily Manager since I exported from Verbum). I'm running Office Professional 2016 on a Windows 10 OS, both installed in German language while my Verbum used the English UI today - not sure if this makes a difference.

Hi Philana
I'm running the latest beta, with MS Office Home and Student 2019.
Here is the XML file - 7624.Sermon Manager XML.xml
I can't seem to upload the log files ZIP - it says there is an error uploading. I'm happy to email if needed.
