ANNOUNCEMENT: End of support for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 & MacOS 10.11–10.13 - Faithlife Forums (logos.com)

Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft either, if I remember right.

Logos Help Center (LHC) => Logos Minimum System Requirements includes: Windows 10 64-bit "Anniversary Update" (1607) or later

FYI: Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Thankful for Microsoft silently allowing Windows 10 upgrades on older hardware using Windows 7 product keys with the risk of lacking device drivers for older hardware. Screen shot shows Intel Core i5 2nd generation, which was released in January 2011 (and has been discontinued by Intel).

You need Windows 10. You could do that as a virtual machine, but that is just making life hard. I would update your operating system.

What about if I install SSD? Will it work?

SSD is highly recommended storage for Logos 9.

Thankful for Microsoft silently allowing Windows 7 product keys to be used for Windows 10 installation.

Caveat: risk of installing Windows 10 on older hardware is device drivers. Personally like idea of installing new SSD hardware followed by installing Windows 10 then use Settings => About => System Info (shows Windows 10 edition like your picture earlier in this thread) => Device Manager (hopefully not have any yellow warnings).

I am dubious about a 10 year old dual-core system with only 3.9 GB usable memory! Check that it can upgrade to 8 GB memory.

I’m optimistic about a Windows 10 upgrade for your computer, having done so on other similar Windows 7 systems as recently as last month. However, one system could not complete an in-place upgrade and I had to do a clean install. It has worked well after that. Other systems usually upgrade without issues. I would recommend trying due to potential security issues with Windows 7 now that it’s no longer patched. One way to test is to install Windows 10 to a partition first before upgrading the original OS.

Replacing the HDD with an SSD would be a significant boost for your system. If possible, adding RAM would help for intensive Logos use.

Tes, you are hoping to carry off forty tons of gold in an aging Metro. Might be time for a pickup truck at least.

I haven‘t  understood the statement, but Wow forty tons of gold is not bad.

Both! But try the upgrade to Windows 10 before getting them.

(the SSD is preferable, but don't count on running more than 1 or 2 apps with Logos)

I would say the SSD is the more important upgrade. Program load and indexing will be much faster.

More RAM will be needed when opening multiple resources, guides, searches etc.

Another option that could save you some money is to use the Logos web app instead of the desktop app. That would give you access to your books and many useful bible study tools without upgrading anything.

Then you could save money up and instead of updating an aging machine, you could replace it with a more powerful budget laptop.

As one who has no knowledge of computer, perhaps this  might make me ignorant ,but any way curiously asking  what about If I upgrade both  Ram and  SSD ?

This is a great way to make it run Logos better. I did this some years ago with my laptop I owned then, works great. RAM is no big issue to upgrade, normally, but putting in an SSD will require cloning the HDD currently in.

Here is a very simplistic answer. A computer is made up of many parts and each serves a primary function.

Hard Drive (SSD): How much total information the computer can hold. Think "shelves in a library."

RAM: How much can the computer think about at one time.

Processor: How fast can the computer think and solve problems.

This is a very simplistic description, but hopefully it will help you a bit. If you update the hard drive and ram, it will certainly help. However, if your processor is old, then it will still be slow. Furthermore, as software and operating systems develop and evolve, they will require greater processor speeds, ram, storage.

My wife and I are of the mindset that we purchase a car and we will drive it until it stops... well not quite, but close. I know many people who buy new cars every couple of years. When I was young and stupid, I would purchase a new computer every year or two whether I needed it or not. Now that I am older and have a family, I can't justify making those purchases as often. However, computers have life spans, and those life spans aren't as long as some would like. Just as we have chosen to get as much life out of our cars as possible, I understand the desire to do the same with computers. If you are just "surfing the net" and "checking email," that is easier to do. If you have a desire to keep up with advances in technology (such as Logos), that is much more difficult to do.

My 2¢ for trying to be frugal on computer purchases: Find the sweet spot. Don't buy the latest and greatest, but buy something that has most of the "new tax" gone. Do buy something that is upgradeable if you can. Your processor (Intel® Core™ i5-2520M) came out exactly 10 years ago. Putting money into this device isn't probably a wise investment. It was a mid-level processor when it came out.

I am not a windows user, so I am not the best to direct you to a good value machine, but I would look for one. If money is very tight, perhaps looking to purchase a used computer, even one which is 5 years old, would be a better option.

As a general rule, but do you think doing so for this 10 year old laptop would be good?

Well, if someone has the means to buy a newer laptop, then probably there's a time to lay the old one to rest. And getting a newer machine with Windows 10 already installed is much less hassle than cloning the HDD, updating RAM and upgrading the OS. But then, some people have to live on a tight budget, or simply like to hold on to old stuff that's not broken.

Cloning existing storage is required if want to keep/transfer existing application software configuration from Windows 7 for Windows 10 upgrade.

Clean installation of Windows 10 does not require cloning HDD, but clean install means all application software has to be installed. FYI: clean install of Windows 10 can use Windows 7 product key (if sticker is still readable).

Personally installed SSD into an old laptop followed by using Windows 10 USB installer with older Windows 7 product key for clean install (with security software switch to Microsoft), followed by downloading & installing other freeware software: e.g. Paint.NET

I had my doubts earlier, but now I'm convinced this is not the way to go because of the technical challenges for Tes.

Tes, as Dave has evaluated, the upgrades might not be easy for you. If you buy an SSD, RAM, and perhaps need to pay someone to do the upgrades for you, it may be good to compare that cost to the cost of a used computer that has suitable specifications, within your budget?

I am very grateful for all your suggestions. I have come to follow your advice. My conclusion is It's not worth to spend money on this device.
