OED Online Edition and Logos

Would it be possible to port to the online addition of the OED via Logos and have all the capabilities of Logos functionalities enhance the broad services and comprehensive treatment of word definitions and etymologies as well as quotations available to subscribers? As I see it Libraries can subscribe to the OED what would prevent Logos from being a subscriber and offer access through their program? Is there any interest?

I can't imagine the OED would be excited about having one company subscribe to their service and then give it away to all their customers who pay a small fee to that company (Faithlife). OED would expect the full subscription amount from each user. Normally $295 per year in the US (£215 for the rest of the world), though occasionally they have special deals. This would have to involve a collaboration contract between Faithlife and OED. OED would have to open up their API to Logos, so Logos could pull in the data. I strongly doubt that OED would let Logos download all the data and give users access to all of it for fully indexes searches like they can do with the rest of their library. That is a massive amount of valuable data that OED owns. They purposes deliver it only in small chunks to users who do searches on their web platform. I just don't see it as technically or financially possible for Logos to gain full access to all the data behind the OED platform.

It's a nice pie-in-the-sky thing to dream about. I sure would love to have the OED integrated into my Logos library. But I'm not holding my breath.

I understand the points you make Rosie but I am not sure that the idea is non-viable.

Faithlife could attempt to negotiate a deal that allowed them to be an agent of the OED for a commission.

Users of Logos represent a small subset of researchers but probably a subset that either has access already via an academic library or has little or no hope of financing a standalone subscription.

This niche market might be seen as an opportunity by the Oxford Press.

I'm intrigued by access to the full OED. But even on sale, I find the yearly subscription a bit high for my needs. If FL could swing a deal that made them an agent, I would be intrigued however.

It seems I miscalculated. Demand for a service such as this does not appear to be as great as I originally thought it would be. Rosie puts forth the complexities of such an endeavor and underscores the effort required by FL to pull off such a deal.

OED and FL though desirable for some has not reached a critical mass. Dictionaries though a love of mine don't seem to be as popular with the general community. How many of you have the 1828 edition of Webster's Dictionary or even own the Collin's English Dictionary? If you are interested in supporting dictionaries in general I urge you to enter a bid for the Century Dictionary and purchase and use the other dictionaries FL already has in its catalogue.

I love the OED, but agree, this is very unlikely... and if it were a possibility, it would likely be cost prohibitive. The suggestion that FL would be able to bundle and drive the price down isn't realistic. It would likely be more expensive, not less.

The first suggestion here is interesting: in the UK our local library service subscribes to the OED so I can access it simply by using my library card number. It is an incredible resource if you know how to use it. I imagine that a lot of the excellent reference volumes on Logos (e.g. AYBD) have probably referred to it already?

The audio book is read by the author, Simon Winchester, and he does a great job, as well as having the perfect voice.
