Will Logos 8 still start and run on my computer after support for 8 officially ends? Logos 9 will not install on my computer (my OS is too old). Yet, my computer works fine and I'm not in the position to get a new one anyway.

I believe support for Logos 8 has already ended. But the program should still open and run on your computer.

    Welcome [:D]

Logos 8 Desktop App => Announcement: Logos 8 is now unsupported (Yes for Logos 8 starting & running has some caveats)

    Curious about OS version ?

Logos Wiki => Logos Release History shows Logos 8 & Verbum 8 support officially ended on 3 Mar 2021 that includes:

Welcome to the forums. Yes, the version on your computer will continue to run without problems. And you can come to the forums for support. There may be updates to resources or new resources that won't work with your older version but there is usually advanced notice before this happens. Features that run in the cloud may eventually have changes that make them not work. But even then, your base program should continue to work.

Question: If a resource requires Logos 9 [or latter] and we are running logos 8 [or earlier] will FL tell us when we try to buy that resource that it will not run on our current system?  [Or do they just let us buy something we can not, currently, use?]

I don't believe these is any such notification.

And I could see it being quite difficult to do so as it would require links between backend systems that might not currently be linked and they would need to take into account the possibility of us using multiple systems including access to the web app and mobile apps.

Is this question born of experience or simply hypothetical?

Do we know of such resources?

Hypothetical! thought that this thread would be the place for an answer.  But I almost always upgrade to the next level soon after released.

But someone else might need the answer.  You see a wanted new resource in Logos 12 and miss the fine print that it needs Logos 11 to run and [Whoops]  You are still on Logos 9. Maybe an email that you will not get the resource and that you have not been charged will be enough if the email suggests that you update to the free Logos 12.

On mobile? Yes. On desktop? Not that I am aware.

If I remember correctly, didn't Logos give a warning on the web site when they first established the .logos4 extension for resources? Its been a long time, but it seems that I recall the warning on product pages that if you were still using Libronix, resources that had a .logos4 extension would not work unless you had Logos 4 installed.

There have been cases where resources required the most recent version of the software to enable them to work  - see https://community.logos.com/forums/p/87956/616859.aspx#616859 for an example.

And it will also be true when resources with new datatypes are introduced.

So David, I think that the received wisdom is that back in the mist of time when something happened to Logos 4 or 5 there was a resource or two that one could purchase but would not work on un-upgraded systems.

I would guess that if there was such an 'edge' case with Logos 8/9/10 then one would be able to purchase the resource but find comfort in Faithlife's return policy. I imagine that the vast majority of serious Logos users will need to upgrade their base systems to cope with the world not, necessarily, to run Logos. I doubt that Faithlife will need to make many refunds or mollify many customers.
