Sermon Builder Issue

I'm probably doing it wrong... but...

When I have a line in SB that ends with a reference to a Scripture... then I have 2 choices... hit tab or return.

Either one puts the text of the Scripture into the SB. And I cannot change the format of the passage even if I wanted the passage inserted.

How do I turn this off? I use Zipscript to do this and I want the return or tab to work like it used to.... or at least I thought it used to work.

Now .... when I hit return to enter a new line... then I have to highlight the Scripture passage that was entered (because I hit return) --- delete it... then click on format to reformat the line I am in to be like the former line.... then type in what I want on that line.

I would like for return to enter a new line with the formatting of the line I am on. Tab to enter a tab... If you want to enter the text of the Scripture... then set up a code such as ctrl-tab or something. But using return or tab to enter passages is not normal.... or at least it's not normal in many of other text programs....

But maybe I'm not understanding something???

I agree some of the changes in 9.7 were unhelpful - there is a discussion of some of this in https://community.logos.com/forums/t/202433.aspx

As a workaround you can enter a space after the biblical reference and that prevents the tab / enter button including the scripture block.

You can. What are you trying to do that you cannot do.

Return has always worked like this when you had a Bible reference on its own line. What's new in 9.7 is that it can now have text before it.

How often do you end a line with a Bible reference without any terminal punctuation? If you put a period at the end, you can hit Enter and create a new paragraph as you would expect.

Would you like a setting to disable the Scripture insertion feature?

You can. What are you trying to do that you cannot do.

I checked my SB lists.... It seems I like to have info about a scripture and then have the scripture at the end of the sentence. Out of all my SBs I don't normally put a period at the end.... I don't know why.... just apparently don't

But you are right.... if there is a period at the end of the scripture... then tab and enter works as normal.

I would still think that there should be some command ctrl-whatever.... to insert the passage. This would seems more normal??

There's a bug we're fixing now, where Enter in lists inserts a Scripture block but shouldn't.

Will fixing that solve your problem? Or does this happen to you regularly outside of lists?

We're currently biasing toward convenience and friction reduction and away from control, because control adds friction and complexity. The risk of all convenience features is getting it wrong more than you get it right and creating an annoyance. Even when you get it right, once in a while the user doesn't want the convenience feature, and you need to make a quick and easy way to undo it. Autonumbering of lists is a good analogy. Everyone biases toward creating lists (e.g., when I user types "1."), making it as low friction as possible, because this is what users want to do 95% of the time. For the 5% where they don't want to create a list, it's easy to undo and keep moving. That's how we're biasing our behavior here: reduce friction for what most users want to do most of the time (inserting Scripture blocks), and make it quick and easy to deviate from that in the cases where you don't want it.

But there's still some tuning to do. Here's what we're planning:

We'll fix the bug we introduced in 9.7, where we don't disable the feature in lists (like we used to).
We'll improve the our undo experience (via Backspace and Ctrl + Z) for quickly removing an unwanted Scripture block.
We'll consider adding a setting to allow you to disable the feature.

We may need to introduce a modifier key alongside Enter (e.g., Shift), but we'd like to avoid that if we can correctly tune the behavior without introducing that added keystroke tax to every Scripture insertion.
