The most likely answer is that you have turned off the visual filter for those highlighters / note files.
Pah - read the questions Alabama. If pens stop working then the most likely answer is that they have run out of ink.
Your answer might well come a close second and be more apposite though.

hi
thanks for the reply. The highlighters are fine for the use within the note files, its highlighters for marking up resources that have stopped working, (although actual notes made in a resource are highlighted in the resource).

This sounds as though Alabama's suggestion is probably correct.
Within a resource (via the visual filter menu) we can specify which notebooks are enabled to show information.
It is possible that the notebook you are using for highlights is different from the one you are using for notes - and the first is not selected in the visual filter menu while the second is.
If you knw which notebook you are using for highlights, check if it is enabled in the visual filter menu for the resource

hi Graham
thanks for replying. I'ts nothing to do with the connection between notebooks and highlighting
the problem is marking up resources themselves - simply highlighting text in a resource...
does this make sense? .
thank you and best wishes
Michael
ps so if you try to just use a highlighter pen to simply underline the first two words of the text in Colossians 4:7.......mine has suddenly stopped working

I'm afraid it doesn't!
When you apply a highlight to a resource, that highlight gets placed in a notebook (or are considered to be in No Notebook). If that notebook is not enabled in the resource visual filter the highlight will be present in the resource but not shown.
ps so if you try to just use a highlighter pen to simply underline the first two words of the text in Colossians 4:7.
When I do that I get this
Hoever, my highlights are not put into a notebook and if I deselect the No notebook option from the visual filter menu, the highlight disappears from the resource
That is what I was trying to indicate as it seemed a possible explanation for what you were seeing.
If I have misuinderstood the issue, please clarify further.

hi Graham
here is an example from a commentary where there are differently coloured square icons representing different notes made into note files
There's also two highlights ( pink and orange) to mark up sections of text (without any connection to a note file) - which have now stopped and no more can be made... I hope you or someone can help....

I'll try
I've recreated what you are describing - and when right clicking on a word in the highlight I can select it (top left of the context menu) and then open the notes tool to that highlight (as shown by the arrow) using the Open notes and highlights feature.
Please do that and post a screenshot showing what you see
Then open the Information Tool and the Highlighting Tool.
Click a word in the highlighted area and look in the Other References section of the Information Tool to see what palette the highlight comes from (in my case Personal). Then in the Highlighting Tool, open the dropdown menu to the right of the relevant palette name and post a screenshot as per below

1. Highlights ARE “notes” within Logos, so it is relevant
2. Highlights and other notes don’t have to be in a specific note file
3. The most likely cause for what I understand you to be describing is a note document with highlights that is TURNED OFF in the visual filter menu.
If that doesn’t appear to be the problem or you are continuing to have issues, please call Faithlife directly.

hi Graham
I'm still not using the new NOTES TOOL I'm still using the NOTE FILES as they are are superb resources ( I do a lot of manual linking via the favourites menus) and the new notes tool still doesn't yet allow indenting in the formatting of sub headings in the file, which makes them more awkward to use quickly as long/large stand alone resources.
I'm guessing the feature I'm describing, a vital part of the old NOTE FILES has disappeared an a recent logos update....I hope not

hi there JT
thanks for the reply, i've checked through the visual filters in every way i can make out, but it might be soemthing to do how I'm using the (old) NOTE FILES rather than the new NOTES TOOL... so I'll contact Faithflife directly to check, thanks again

this is what I get, showing a similar connection on the (old) NOTE FILES to a pre--exisiting highlight, but i cannot add any new ones.
That suggest that the highlights are being stored in a notebook called Highlighter Pens (which is fairly normal)
Does that notebook about in the list of enabled notebooks in your visual filter?
Can you check - in the Highlighting tool - which notebook is being used for that palette - and post a screenshot as per below?
I note your comment about still using the old Notes format. I admit I don't know the full implications of that in this scenario so good you are checking with Faithlife. But from what you show the notes documents are being presented as Notebooks in the Notes Tool so I'm referring to them in that way for convenience!

hi JT, hi Graham
thanks for your replies help and advice. I've emailed faithlife tech support, but not heard back yet.
It seems pretty likely the former functionality i[ve now lost, associated with the NOTE FILES, has indeed just been replaced by the NOTES TOOL(as per screen shot below)
which is bad for me, as the NOTES TOOL is still not as good as the old NOTE FILES for someone like me who does my own ( extensive) linking via the favourites menu.. the NOTES TOOL is not so good due the inability to indent sub headings in the split screen mode... meaning large documents are less easy to navigate at a glance...
(I've messaged and emailed about this but faithflife support doesn't even reply or acknowledge the issue in any way, so I'm guessing its not understood and I've not been taken seriously enough yet..
I wish logos/faithflife wouldn't just do this sort of thing, not until the NOTES TOOL really does properly replace the old NOTE FILES for use as large stand alone resources...I've explained the way I use them quite a lot and can send screen shots..this last outstanding issue is quite simple and striaghtforward to understand at least...
thanks again
best wishes

All your other screen shots show that you are still using old Notes (Note files). Ignore the Help file extract which will necessarily reflect the Notes tool.
There is also some confusion about Highlighting from your previous posts:-
There's also two highlights ( pink and orange) to mark up sections of text (without any connection to a note file) - which have now stopped and no more can be made... I hope you or someone can help....
Those Highlights are connected to your Highlighter Pens note file when you look at the screenshot that shows your note file alongside WBC Vol 34A.
When you look at Visual filters for WBC Vol 34A do you see Highlighter Pens under NOTES and HIGHLIGHTS?
Finally, when you say "no more can be made" are you saying that cannot highlight text in any resource with a style from Highlighter Pens?

Hi Dave, thanks for your reply.
1. i'm definately using the old NOTE FILES rather than thew new NOTES TOOL
2. the screenshot from the help files is actually concealing some of the text. If more fully indicates the linking of highlights to "applied palette style" (in the Old NOTES FILES) has now been replaced by a different form of linking associated with the NOTES TOOL
3. I formely included a screenshot showing the linking of " solid colours" or "emphasis" etc, which are all amongst the forms of highlight which have their own "NOTE FILE". The other form of highlight is "highlighter pens" which also has its own NOTE FILE....all depending on exactly which form of highlighter was used
when I state "no more highlighting can be done, I mean nothing atall from highlighter pens, emphasis or solid colours can be used to mark up the text in a resource.
I can still make "notes" in a NOTE FILE which bear a colour and highlights text, and I can also mark up text inside a NOTE FILE . If I switch to using the NOTES TOOL on my system still running the ld NOTES FILES I still cannot highlight text in a resource. I'm guessing the only way I will NOW be able to highlight text in a resource is by completely migrating to the new NOTES TOOL? ( but as I explained how in more detail in posts above, the NOTES TOOL still lacking in a simple and significant way if used as a large stand alone document compared with the old NOTES FILES) which is a loss of functionality for me... unless the NOTES TOOL were further improved ( in the way I explain in posts above)
best wishes

One idea has occurred to me - but this is only speculation.
If I remember rightly, when the new Notes Tool was implemented, the way our notes and highlights were added to it was syncing the contents of Notes Documents to the Notes Tool. And for those people continuing to use the old system, there was a background task automatically syncing contents into the new Notes Tool.
If there is a problem with this background sync task that is stopping the sync of highlights it could explain what you are seeing.
Someone from Faithlife would need to advise whether this is the case.

hi Graham
have you any idea how long it might be until faithlife reply back properly and engage with the issue?
I've emailed several times. Once someone from customer service enquired of more information but no reply since. It would be great is someone would at least reply to say the issue is understood and someone is trying to resolve it etc
best wishes

Hi Michael

I'm afraid I don't know
I've emailed several times.
Some do find that phoning works better (I have no personal experience of this as rarely contact them)
I'll see if I can flag this for someone's attention

My highlighter pens have stopped working, too. They still work on a device that is still running Logos 9.5 so it is an update issue. I do still use the old notes system, too.

If I change the setting by typing "set prefer notes tool to yes" in the search bar and restarting Logos, then the highlighters begin working again. Seems like a glitch in the update that doesn't take into account people who are still using the old system.

hi William thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want to use the notes tool, I prefer to use the "old system" of logos NOTE FILES because they are better for organisation of large documents than the NOTES TOOL.
best wishes
Michael
PS The Notes Tool has not yet been improved to allow indenting of sub-titles in the sub-title listings in the left hand column in split screen view.
The indenting of sub titles ( two or three of four times) allows the organisation of the NOTE FILE into headings, sub headings, sub sub headings etc which means it's easeir to arrange large documents coherantly to use quickly (Of course I also use colours, blanks, capitals and a combination of these, but indentation is also so important, especially since i had hundreds of files which need the indentaiton to make proper sense
i've made a few bog-standard suggestions to logos/faithlife about ways indentation of sub titles in split screen view might possibly be achieved with little tech input to develop the software, but I've not even had an acknoweldgement, let alone a reply. ( except one reply once to ask what the issue was , but no follow up)
I've emailed these issues time and again in this forum and to faithflife/logos without success. I'm in the UK and I can't always phone, but the matter is obvious if anyone takes it seriously to check, it out. I hope, even now that someone from faithlife/logos actually reads these forum posts....and that either
1/ the highlighter pens will be repaired for NOTE FILES ( rather than remove my functionality without understanding the context and consequences)
or
2/ Indenting for the NOTES TOOL sub titles will be introduced.
thanks again

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you should use the new notes tool. I don't use it either and have run into the same issues. I was just confirming that it looks like those of us who haven't moved to the new notes have been overlooked in recent updates. I hope a solution is worked out since I don't want to make drastic changes to the way I use notes.
