Alpha 18 day!

Sometimes I hate being on the east coast. I've been up for 3.5 hours, and the west coast programmers probably aren't even awake yet, let alone at work releasing Alpha 18 for its eager testers to test, consume, and put through the ringer like a shaken chew toy in a bulldog's mouth Big Smile

Never mind the East coast, I'm in the UK and it's after 4pm. We've got a volcanic ash cloud, but no A18. I know which I'd rather have!

I am having a hard time waiting. Every time an alpha is released it's like getting an early Christmas present. I like seeing the features as they come out. I love my Logos program so much, and I will be so glad when its finished, or at least getting stable in Beta.

While I don't use a Mac I understand what you guys go through in the anticipation of the NEXT alpha/beta release (I have Beta tested Logos... and continue to do so even now). I have therefore submitted all your names to be placed in LBS Anonymous. When you come to your first support group meeting, just stand up and say "My name is ______, and I'm a Logosholic." It is liberated and the beginning to recovery.

Tomorrow I arrive home after two weeks of holiday without my shiny iMac (all I had was my trusty Toshiba Tablet and L3). When I switch on my Mac, there will be a brand new Alpha just waiting to be downloaded for me! I've never looked forward so much to coming home after a holiday!

You can't yet apply highlighting styles on the Mac. Most visual filters display on the Mac now, including highlighting. However, the ability to apply highlighting is not yet implemented on the Mac. I am, however, watching work proceed on that feature (among others) at this very moment.

Just a week ago, I would have said, as I did on the forum, "Nae chance!" However, having sampled the features-rich A18, it might just be possible, says the optimist in me.

I'm not sure why the Beta designation is viewed as a big deal. I'm more interested in the features working well than I am in what the release is called. Lots of features are still missing, including goodies introduced since L4 PC first came out. I'm pleased with the progress of the Mac Alpha but still use the PC version until more features and optimization show up in the Mac version. Until that happens, it really doesn't matter to me if the next version is called Alpha or Beta. Give me the features, not the version name.

Beta means features are working...all that is left is tweaking. So Beta is a big deal. Optimization isn't the focus of Alpha, features are.

I understand what the designations are supposed to mean (no one follows the designations exactly - look at the PC version of Logos. 4.0c beta 1 contained new features though it was called beta and new betas continue to add features from time to time), but I don't expect L4 Mac to be feature complete by the end of May, or anytime within the next few months. Progress continues, but a lot of work remains.
