Thanks for putting this together - monitoring this is very much needed.

You know you are imposing a Western Church definition of "church fathers" here that may not be to everyone's liking?[;)] I actually think there should be three automatic lists:

    • "doctors of the church" ... a list that is inclusive of all traditions (I have the collection rules)
    • ecclesial writers ... a fluid group used in the Catholic topical index
    • church fathers (western) ... that uses the definition you are using

But without the ecclesial writers and doctors list, there may be users who like having the church fathers having a bit of an eastern flair i.e. no end date to the period of the church fathers.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

For the benefit of others reading who aren't interested in analyzing my choices in detail, I cut the era off c.750/800 and the only primary texts older than that that I requested removed are Jewish.

Indeed. But they wouldn't consider Palamas, Daughters of St. Paul who are (AFAIK) still alive, Nicholas of Cusa, or St. Catherine of Genoa, etc., as Church Fathers.

Funny, you chose some of the examples that came to my mind ...

    Palamas,
He is considered a church father by some Melkites ... there may be other Eastern Catholics who do as well.

    Nicholas of Cusa,
But he is informally called Doctor christianus (Christian Doctor) ... are we only interested in those formally listed as doctors or interested in all treated as doctors

Okay, I am being pedantic with a serious case of tongue-in-cheek. Your lists were quite acceptable and very useful. I am glad you stepped in and had them update the list.
