Feature: Improved Speed
Improved Speed
What is it?
-
Native support for Apple Silicon gives significantly improved performance increase across the board (35% or more) for everyone with an M1 or M2 processor
-
.NET 6 support gives everyone an additional performance boost.
-
Faster indexing (~15%) for everyone on desktop, and about 10% less disk space for the index.
-
Improved server performance improves the speed of most online functions, which is especially beneficial to the mobile and web apps.
How to access it?
-
There’s nothing you need to do. Once you have downloaded Logos 10, you will receive the improved speed. If you’re using an M1 or M2 Mac, make sure you select the version suitable for your processor when you download Logos 10.
Note
-
Speed improvements can vary depending on your unique hardware configuration..
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new feature. Please provide your feedback in the comments below.

To confirm, when a Logos/Verbum 9.x installation updates to Logos/Verbum 10.0, will the existing index on my machine automatically shrink?

I think this won't happen automatically until 10.1.
In the meantime, you can save some space by deleting the "BibleIndex" folder manually (only AFTER updating to Logos 10).

OK.

Will that trigger a new round of indexing or any other side effects?

full index in L9 on a 2020 M1 took 181 minutes,
full index in L10 on the same M1 took 99.5. For 16000+ resources.
Consider me impressed with the speedL2 lvl4 (...) WORDsearch, all the way through L10,

No, it will just free up that disk space. (In Logos 10 ONLY. If you delete that folder in Logos 9, it will rebuild the Bible Index.)

No, it will just free up that disk space.
Great. That's what I was hoping for. Well done!

Does .NET 6 support mean support for Windows ARM?
No, it does not.
We're tracking that suggestion here: https://feedback.faithlife.com/boards/logos-desktop-app/posts/native-support-for-windows-on-arm
(So far, it does not appear to be very popular, at least compared to the Apple Silicon suggestion: https://feedback.faithlife.com/boards/logos-desktop-app/posts/native-support-for-apple-silicon-processors .)

My MacBook upgraded to v10 automatically (connect essentials subscriber). Is there a way to tell in the L10 about screen if it is running the Apple Silicon version?
thanks,

Running MacOS Monterey on Intel i7 3.2 Ghz 6 core with SSD and 16 GB RAM. L10 is slower than L9. See many beachballs. I know above you say big improvements for Apple Silicon. But, the advertising on the web site seems to suggest and above you seem to suggest that all users would see a some kind of speed bump. So, for Intel Macs is anything supposed to be faster?

Don't know if you follow all the L10 threads, but re-doing the visual filters that have searching improved speed a lot. I still have beachballs on resource opening/closing, though.

Problem with loading layouts
Thanks for all the good new ideas and features in Logos 10.
Windows 10:
When loading my layouts, the loading process takes a very long time. The computer stops responding, only after a long wait Logos responds again. Also the loading of the built-in layouts (devotion, bible and commentary, etc.) takes much longer than in Logos 9.MacBook Pro M1:
Speed and loading are excellent and without delay!
This is how it would be desirable in Windows as well! Here should be urgently improved. Thanks for a fast support.

So, not sure I follow. When you say re-doing the visual filters that have searching, I am not sure what that means. But, I guess I will try to figure that out.
BTW, if I load L10 with no layout, it loads quickly - about 10-15 seconds. Opening an existing layout takes a while.
But, even clicking on the three vertical dots induces the beachball. It seems like just about anything I try to DO does that...

Also the loading of the built-in layouts (devotion, bible and commentary, etc.) takes much longer than in Logos 9.I've got similar problems. After upgrading, completing indexing, restarting Logos 10 a few times, Logos 10 takes about 20-40 seconds to open or close a resource. So many delays with "not responding" and egg-timer showing. The CPU usage is less than 10% while not responding. I'm running Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600KF CPU @ 4.10GHz with 32GB Ram and 1TB M2 SSD on 150Mbps broadband. I hope it is just teething problems, and that it will get faster. But I love the 'Add to Library' feature.

Bill, NB said when they updated the search syntax, visual filters that had the older syntax could slow things down. I had several that use searches; I deleted, and solved a good portion of really slow layout loads.
But still slow as you and John Duffy describe above.
Anyway Ali Pope (FL) said they were checking another user's logs with same issue as you both, seems like. Can't find her reply to the thread today.

Anything I try to do gets ne a beachball. Open Program settings... beachball. If I select, say a guide, the app freezes, then, a beachball after 2-3 seconds, so you think it is locked upm then a beachball, then the item opens, like Canvas.
I deleted all visual filters. I did a total re-index. Same... Nothing has changed.
So, I created diagnostic logs. Uploaded.6433.LogosLogs.williamcook.20221015-080828.zip

I looked at your logs; the only things that stick out involve notes, but that's not necessarily unusual. I tried some resets based your logs with no impact. I'm impressed the issue seems to be in panel'ing ... opening process, and closing process. If you simply 'move' panel-A to panel-B (even between windows), they're instant. And it's unrelated to access to new features (occurs with or without).
I guess need some experts.

So, I created diagnostic logs. Uploaded.
If I'm reading these correctly, it looks like you're loading a layout with a lot of resources. We found a performance regression in L10 Mac for this scenario, and have a fix coming.

If you don't know how to display the Mac library, several options. "Open Finder window. Click Go in a Menu Bar → select Go to Folder. Or use the Cmd+Shift+G key shortcut. Type ~/Library and click Go in a dialog window. The required Mac Library folder will be shown." There's also the 'View' option > Show Folders > option-key to display Library option.
Then (I have Verbum, but Logos4 is there too):

Thanks for the info. This is what I have been trying. I am on Logos and not Verbum, so I assume the folder in Library should read Logos. I don't see a Logos foler (or Verbum).
I only have one hard drive and installed Logos as it wanted to, i.e. not alternate installation or location.iMac (2019 model), 3Ghz 6 Core Intel i5, 16gb Ram, Radeon Pro Graphics. 500GB SSD.

I'm guessing you've already been here, without success (as above). But for others, as to location of files:

I have windows 11, Logos 10... and I have Layouts that span 2 monitors with many books open.... and I don't see any delays like you guys are talking about.
I wonder what the difference is?

It is Logos4 for Mac OS X (and Verbum for the other).

That is in the Data folder unless you did a fresh install of L10. It is not used in L10, so you can delete it if present.
