Feature: Auto Translation
Auto Translation
Instant translation opens a whole new world of resources.
What is it?
You can open a side panel in almost any resource and have passages from that resource instantly translated into more than one hundred languages.
How to access it?
-
Open the Logos 10 Desktop app.
-
Open any book in your Library.
-
Click on the Auto Translation icon (rectangular icon) in the top right corner of the resource panel.
Note
-
This is an online-only feature and is also available on the web app.
-
There’s a fair-use limit which resets each month.
-
Auto-Translation is available in Gold packages and above.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new feature. Please provide your feedback in the comments

Hello, what is the limit on the auto translator? And if I have an account with DeepL Pro will it be linked to Logos?

Hello, what is the limit on the auto translator? And if I have an account with DeepL Pro will it be linked to Logos?
We've set a limit that will hopefully be sufficient for most normal needs. We intend to keep an eye on usage and may consider adjustments in the future.
You DeepL account will not be linked to Logos.

How do I change the translation engine?I'd want to change Google into Papago, as you did with the Deepl.0
-
There are no means to override the selected translation engine. We automatically select one based on the source and destination languages.

That's sad news. In Korean, Papago or Kakao translation is much more accurate than Google translation. Can we expect the translation engine in Korean to be changed in the future?

This not planned at this point, but it is possible. We designed it in a way that we can adopt more translation services in the future. Thanks for your feedback.

Gold packages and above.
According to this page (https://www.logos.com/features/auto-translation) it is included in Silver.
What is the difference between "included in" and "works best in"?
I can't seem to find it in silver?

My guess is that there aren't that many language resources included in Silver that can take advantage of the utility. Gold gives more use cases.

Auto-translate for different platforms is included at different levels:
- Auto-translate for mobile (coming soon) is included in the Bronze Feature Set
- Auto-translate for the web app is included in the Silver Feature Set
- Auto-translate for desktop is included in the Gold Feature Set

I was really hoping this feature would work for certain dogmatics texts that use a lot of Latin, but it seems to not be translating the occasional Latin phrases that populate a majority English resource. Is there a workaround?
Yes - select the Latin text, and it will only translate the selected text:

This feature does not seem to be working with some resources, such as my Göttingen LXX. Obviously the LXX text itself is in Greek, which apparently is not supported at this time, but I would expect the German text to work.
I'll let the team know about this problem.

Thanks! It is a very cool feature, and I'm looking forward to being able to incorporate it into my studies.

This is a pretty cool feature. I have used DeepL as a Pro user for about a year and a half. I like the way it works.
However . . . (and this probably has a super easy answer--though I haven't been able to find it), when a translation pane opens up, how can I close it?

Click the same button you used to open the translate window to close it. It is toggling between having that sidebar open or closed.

It can be opened using the Selection menu.
You can close it using the button in the upper right corner of the panel, right next to the panel menu (with the three dots).

As I scroll down in a resource that is entirely in a language I want to translate from, every time I stop scrolling, the resource text jumps to the left; after the translation is complete, it jumps to the right. This motion is very distracting. Is it avoidable?

Fwiw, I recall suggesting that FL incorporate an in-program language translation feature a number of years back, and while I do not take full credit for its current presence in Logos, you can show your appreciation for my foresight and acumen by making a generous donation to my Hoarder's Collector's fund--I take cash, PayPal, or Bitcoin...other formats can be negotiated. Hi Father Roza, is it your sense that the translation tool does a pretty good job with Latin-to-English translation? I have a number of books in Logos library that have Latin mixed in with English, e.g. Ludwig Ott's "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma". (I'm probably showing how long I've been a Libronix/ Logos, Verbum user since I was able to purchase that book when Logos could still sell it.)
I was also wondering if you had any idea how good a translation job the tool does with French-to-English?
Thank-you Father. I also appreciate your involvement in the forums!

Suggestion : To increase the limit upon the request of a user even if there is extra cost for usages over the limit rather than fixing the monthly limit
Today I installed 'Logos 10' and tried the auto translation feature. I have already used 10% of monthly limit for a relatively short time since I prefer to read text translated in 'auto translate' window after the installation of the auto-translation feature. I may use all the monthly limit in a day. Therefore, I would like to have the option to increase the limit upon the request of a user even if there is extra cost for usages over the limit.

Are there plans to integrate this feature in sermons, so you can translate a sermon into another language?

Given, e.g., the privacy concerns involved in sending text not produced by Faithlife to external services for automatic translation, I would assume that there is not.
You yourself could, however, use Google Translate, deepl, etc., to translate your own work into other languages.

Change languages - an honest but not a useful answer. The application determines which translation engine is used depending upon the from and to languages. You could use the feedback site to request that Faithlife change the English to Google translator Deepl
