Question: Has something been changed about Cloud resources in v23? I'm noticing that Cloud resources are showing up in my search results when I search a collection now (which wasn't the case before). I can see Cloud resources in Search when I search a collection but I still can't see Cloud resources when I actually open the collection in the Collection tool.
Is this intentional? If so, it should be added to the release notes.
-----------------------------------
On separate note, you may want to be explicit in the release notes that the 'Update Resources' command is now 'Update Books'.

The ability to search Cloud Books within a collection sounds like it might be an unintended side-effect of a change we made to ensure that tags, ratings, and series all included Cloud Books.
Is it a bad thing or a good thing!?

I'm not sure yet. My first reaction was it's a bad thing because collections were how I was searching only downloaded resources while also including/excluding certain types of resources. It kills two birds with one stone. I'd actually like to see Cloud resources in collections for library management purposes. But having them be excluded from Search when I search a collection was actually serving a positive purpose for me.
I know that doesn't really answer your question. But for me I'd like quicker/easier ways to search only my downloaded resources with precision (especially through exclusions, e.g. -bibles or -commentaries or -perseus, or -lectionaries). So my "Entire Library (No Bibles)" collection was serving as "Downloaded Books" minus Bibles, and now v23 renders that ineffective. My workaround was to create a new collection called "Downloaded Library (No Bibles)" with the rule "mytag:device -type:bibles". But that only works since I had already tagged all of my downloaded resources with the tag "device".
On the other hand, I also want flexibility in library management, and it would be great to see all the books that meet a collection rule in Collections and in the Library and not just the downloaded ones. This would actually help me determine which books to download since I could just download a whole collection that I had already created. Currently I have to copy the collection rule into the library, but if I added resources to a collection manually instead of through a rule that doesn't work. I can't even see the resources I added manually to collections unless they're already downloaded, but if I can't see them in the collection I don't know to download them in the first place.
Maybe knowing my use case helps you think about how to implement Cloud resources with Search and with Collections. Or maybe I just confused you further.

I just had another thought. I don't think I want Cloud resources showing up in my Guide sections like the Passage Guide collections. However, I do like the fact that they show up in the "Books From Your Library" section in the Factbook but not in the Dictionaries section.
So again my answer is I'm not sure. There's a balance I need between researching using only the best part of my library, and having access to my whole library and discovering new resources when I don't find what I'm looking for. So with tools I'm using for research I want to focus on downloaded resources, but with tools I use for library management and discovery I want to see my whole library. Search is a hybrid case because I want to search my downloaded library by default but with the ability to include/exclude types of resources, but also have the flexibility to move to my whole library when I'm not finding what I'm looking for in my downloaded resources.

I do as well but it may be a function of my keeping two installations - one with a limited library (for testing, illustrating, and demonstrating) where I download resources as needed and one that I use for study. I find collections shrinking because of cloud resources very disconcerting/misleading.

So do you hide resources or do you not mind having low-quality scholarship or non-scholarship in your results? I know you have a very large library.

I'm not MJ, but to solve the same problem, I design my collections not to contain resources that I don't want to have show up when I search them.

I turn down a number of freebies because I consider them worth that - exactly zero. But, yes, I have a lot of books I consider junk that are excluded from my primary research collections. Some of these "junk" books are useful for answering forum questions in that they allow me to view the question more like the questioner does rather than I do. As for the heretical and schismatic materials, I don't mind them as I am more interested in Biblical than theological issues and, therefore, usually know when they will be included. But essentially, I search collections rather than the whole library most of the time and even have an "everything" collection that excludes the noise in the Perseus and Text Creation Partnership collections, books in languages I do not read, items I've labeled "junk" . . .

I'd say it was bad design if you did not adequately specify and test for that side-effect.
I don't want cloud resources in Collections, Guides etc. in any circumstances. If others like it then it should be a Setting.

Just my thought, but this seems like shooting from the hip. I understand collections are made to search specific areas, or subjects, but at the same time there are things I'd like to have considered.
Forgive me if I am misunderstanding here. I think this is a good thing.
What if, for whatever reason, I have not downloaded all the books for a collection I want to search? Especially in a large library.
What about discovering something new in a resource that you didn't download because you may not have thought it was worthwhile before or you just underestimated it's value but it met part of the collection values I set up.
It seems like there is an assumption here that cloud books are not worth searching and they are not in collections and not downloaded for that reason.
I understand some may not want this but I think many would so I'd like to see a setting to save this feature unless someone can convince me otherwise.[:D]

I also stated that there should be a Setting, so I will not attempt to change your mind!
Bill said:What if, for whatever reason, I have not downloaded all the books for a collection I want to search? Especially in a large library.
The main reason for having a small Library is a lack of space on the drive, so the user will have to juggle priorities whether it be temporary or permanent for that need. Other users (including myself) may have a small installation for testing purposes and they can choose to use their full installation or download the missing resources. But they can always use the Search tool with their cloud resources (below)!
Bill said:It seems like there is an assumption here that cloud books are not worth searching and they are not in collections and not downloaded for that reason.
As stated above there are good reasons for not downloading all one's resources. But users can currently choose to Search their cloud books as a separate "Cloud Books" choice. I can't say if that choice respects collections or not, but an option to list cloud books in Collections would certainly enforce that. I choose "Downloaded Books" mainly, and "All Open Books" occasionally.
I don't want to have cloud books listed or included in other tools or guides outside of Library because it would defeat my purpose in deliberately having a small installation. Users forced to have a small installation should be able to decide if that is a good thing or not.

Thank you for taking the time to respond Dave.

I did see that, should have given you credit for that. thank you.
Allow me one last actual example to stress my point for those who may not be familiar with all the books they own and are not downloaded.
I have a collection that I believe you created, and I downloaded called Commentaries:Reformation Period. I currently only have three books in it.(shame on me)
I did a books search using that collection for "household" IN "1Tim 3"
I received no results in downloaded books and ten results in cloud books
This search now alerts me to the fact that I own other books that can be added to that collection and shows me hits I would otherwise have missed using it, if cloud books were not included.
Also the fact that these sections are collapsible makes them easy to hide the results.
I'm just trying to look out for those who struggle with searching. Don't want to take anything away that can help them, or me find something I didn't know I had[:D]
I have 26k books and the only ones I download are the ones I know. I rely on the cloud to show me stuff about the rest in searches and get to know them that way-pretty much.
Thanks for listening

It is unlikely that I created that collection (unless it actually has my name as Author!)

My apology Dave. I checked again and the author was someone else.
I see the cloud issue was considered a bug and discarded in the update to my disappointment.
I have created a request for it as an option and a link to it in the forums if you would reconsider
Thanks again for your time.

Nothing to re-consider, Bill. I hope we both can be satisfied - see https://community.logos.com/forums/p/213980/1247149.aspx#1247149
