BUG: Crash to Desktop when Linking Text to Resource

Hello all,

First bug report, please bare with me as I try best to explain. If these is a way to copy a crash report file or something to share, please let me know. Happy to share anything further I can.

Crash occurred when attempting to modify a note created on iOS while on the Desktop App. I had pasted a section of text from a resource into my note, and wanted to create a link for some text in that note to the original resource for easy reference. I copied location in that resource as a URL, highlighted some text (in my scenario "IVP Bible Background Commentary"), and pasted the URL into the link field in my note and the application crashed straight to desktop.

Steps to recreate:
1) Create a note with text on iOS Logos App
2) On Desktop Logos App, open note created on mobile device and a resource
3) In resource, navigate to text/location desired, open panel menu, and "copy location" as URL
4) In note, highlight desired text, clicking link
5) Paste URL from resource into Link box, click save
6) Desktop Application freezes and crashes.

It would be helpful to know if the crash occurs with a note created on Desktop app.

Also, how the note was created and from what resource.

I don't have IOS, but I had no problems with a note created on Android.

Hi Matthew - and welcome to the forums

I've just tried the steps you outlined (iPad and MacBook) and it all worked fine and Logos did not crash.

As Dave mentions it would be good to know if you see the same problem with a note created on desktop.

And are you running on Windows or Mac?

Which version of Logos do you have on the desktop?

    Hi all,

I made the note on an iPad Air 2 (Logos 29.0.2 (0030) )

Desktop is Windows 10 running Logos Bible Study 30.1.38

    Thanks Matthew

And do you see a crash if you create a note on your desktop and try to add a link to that?

Apologies for the slow reply, I've been away from my desktop for the most of today.

I created a document on the desktop (C:\Users\Test\Desktop\text.docx). When I go to my note, highlight text, and post that object URL into the box and click save, the note does not crash, but also no link is created. The text remains the same.

I created a document on the desktop (C:\Users\Test\Desktop\text.docx).

Sorry - what happens if you try linking to the same place in the same resource as desktop as you did on mobile?

In that scenario, does Logos crash when trying to effect the link?

Yes, the crash is occurring on the desktop app. The note was created on mobile and later on desktop I tried linking to the resource and desktop crash occurs.

    HI Matthew

Yes, the crash is occurring on the desktop app. The note was created on mobile and later on desktop I tried linking to the resource and desktop crash occurs.

    Sorry - I wasn't clear earlier.

I understand you see the problem when trying to add a link on desktop to a note originally created on mobile.

We're trying to understand if you see the same thing with the mobile app not involved - so creating the note on desktop initially and then trying to add a link to it and seeing if it crashes.

Are you able to check that please?

    Thanks, Graham

No problem, I think I understand better.

I do not see this problem occurring with notes that I created first on the desktop. The link function seems to work fine and doesn't cause a crash to desktop.

I also tested the same on other notes I had created on mobile, and I was able to link resources fine, so the issue seems to be isolated to this one note somehow.

It appears that any editing of this one specific note created on mobile and edited on desktop now causes Logos to crash. While looking at the note added some extra text to it while on desktop app, and that also caused a crash.

That's interesting - and sounds like, in some way, the note has become corrupted (I don't know specifically what that means!)

Is it possible to take a copy of the contents of the note, delete it and create it again and see if the problem goes away?

    The plot thickens:

I decided to recreate the note on mobile by selecting all, copying, and pasting into a newly created note. I then got back on the desktop and attempted to recreate the crash by linking to the resource again, and the crash occurred again. So it doesn't appear to be an issue with that original note alone.

My was hunch is something within the note is triggering a crash. Perhaps a special character or something was tripping a crash (this occurred within a system we used at my work before so I thought i'd give this a shot).

There is a table at the bottom of the note I had copied in from IVP BIble Background Commentary NT 2nd Ed.

I left all content the same on the note, and only deleted the table, and then tried linking the resource (same as the other attempts) and this time the link was successful and didn't crash. So to test, I made another note on mobile, copied in this table, then on desktop attempted to link a resource, and a crash occurs.

    Exact Steps to Recreate:

    1) On mobile, create a note with text. On mobile, open IVP Bible Background Commentary Second edition to Luke 1:34–35 (Page 181) and on mobile Copy and Paste the entire "Table 1. Early Parallels in Luke" table into a note. It should retain its formatting as a table just like the resource.

    2) Now on Desktop navigate to this same note with the table present. Copy some text and attempt to link a resource by URL (as original post) and the crash will trigger.

I suspect something with the formatting of the table copied in from mobile is triggering the crash on the desktop.

    Great troubleshooting Matthew!

One of the interesting aspects of this is that tables aren't really supported in notes and if you try to do what you describe on desktop you just get unformatted text as opposed to the formatted table. So I think the problem may be with the mobile app "allowing" pasting the table in the first place!

I can reproduce the problem you are describing - even without trying to paste a link into the note. Accessing the note in some way - such as expanding it to full size - seems to trigger the problem.

My logs from the crash are below

Hopefully someone from Logos will pick this up and respond further.
