intermittent issues with Black Magic UltraStudio Monitor 3G

With a Mac Mini M2 and an UltraStudio Monitor 3G: I've had random trouble with it showing a muted red screen or no video at all with proclaim. Sometimes restarting Proclaim seems to fix the issue and sometimes rebooting the computer. I've tried different cables and different output resolutions but haven't found the silver bullet. Does anyone have experience with this issue? Since it's random and I very rarely use the UltraStudio with any other software, I'm not sure if it's a Proclaim issue or a problem with the BMD box.

    Hi Warren

Our congregation run Proclaim on various systems, mostly Mac's, and run through various peripherals in our houses and at the church building.

None of them have reported a problem similar to yours but then again none of us use a Black Magic Box in our systems.

I think you might try cutting out the Black Magic Box and seeing if the screen operates normally.

    Thank you for the reply.

One of the primary advantages of using a device like the UltraStudio Monitor 3G is that volunteers can't "lose the mouse" on the extended desktop. The dedicated video output device does not act as an extension of the desktop so the mouse never disappears unexpectedly onto the other monitor output. We also don't see a mouse pointing scooting across the projection screen.

The other advantage that I was utilizing was the combo of HDMI and SDI output at once which saves the need for some other converter boxes.

I currently have this Proclaim computer set up with a USB-C HDMI dongle and although that "solves" my problem, it doesn't really solve my problem.

We use a decklink duo at my church and we don’t have these issues. I also used the mini monitor before (oh and as I’m typing I realize we use it in our chapel) and we haven’t had issues.

both are Mac’s. One is a Mac Studio while the other is an intel iMac I believe.

have you checked for updated drivers on BlackMagic’s site? I haven’t heard of the issues you’re describing but it sounds annoying.
