Official: Here's what's included/excluded from the Legacy Fallback License

After many, many, requests, I'm finally able to give more details on what is likely to be included and excluded from the Legacy Fallback License (LFL). I'm sorry it's taken so long.

As a reminder, the LFL will be granted to subscribers after two years of continual subscription as a kind of "safety net" if you find you're no longer able to subscribe. That means you can be confident that you'll be able to use many Logos features long into the future. Perks and most books are not included in the LFL.

The LFL perk will only be given to people who already own a Logos base package or feature set or otherwise qualify for one of the discounted subscription tracks. It won't be offered to new customers.

Some features will be excluded from that license, primarily those that are cloud or AI-based, as they have high ongoing costs that are covered by the subscription payments. Many of you have asked for a list of those exclusions.

The first LFL will not be issued until October 2026, and many more features will be added between now and then. This list only deals with current features (including early access features). If possible, we'll try to identify whether future features will likely be eligible for the LFL when they are released.

So, likely exclusions of current and early access features from the Legacy Fallback License are:

From Logos Premium and up:

  • Early access features:
    • Smart Search
    • Smart Synopsis
    • Help Center
    • Summarization (including in search results)
    • Bible Study Builder AI Questions
  • Older features:
    • Factbook Tags (apart from most tags in Bibles)
    • Community Tags
    • Fuzzy Bible Search
    • Insert Media in Notes
    • Bible Browser
    • Atlas Tool
    • Media Tool
    • Assorted Media

From Logos Pro and up:

  • Early access features:
    • Sermon Assistant
  • Older features:
    • Print Library Catalog
    • Sermon Manager Import
    • Sermon Builder Popular Quotations Sidebar
    • Text Comparison Interlinears

From Logos Max:

  • Older features:
    • Auto-Translation
    • Lemma in Passage
    • Morph Query Engine (this is different from Morph Search)
    • Online Manuscript Dataset

If you already own any of these features, their presence on this list does NOT mean they will be taken away from you. It just means that people without these features will likely not have them granted to them via LFL.

Smart imo to keep prices down for new customers. I have one question, however. Are there plans to make the LFL a purchasable product in the future? I think there may be some new customers who would like to purchase it as a back up plan while they can afford the cost in preparation for a possible future when they may not be able to maintain the subscription. Dropping from the full feature set to the free version would be a massive change, especially after one has gathered many years of experience.

I would like to see an answer to this question.

We do not have plans to make LFL a purchaseable product.

We do not have plans to make LFL a purchaseable product

[:(] Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that it be offered as a standalone product, but rather as a fallback plan only offered to subscribers. Regardless, I realize this isn't something you're currently discussing and that it also isn't a pressing matter. Thanks for all the clarity you've been providing recently.

So it will purely be a subscription model only with no "ownership/perpetual license" for non-logos 10 owners who are not in the LFL track (speaking primarily for new customers, not those who have older versions)? And if it is something that will not be offered forever, does that mean if someone were to get out of a subscription for financial reasons and then come back they lose that, or does that mean there will be a time when LFL be gone completely in the future?

We do not have plans to make LFL a purchaseable product.

Mark, although it's not in the plans now, at least consider selling the non-cloud features after a period in which the subscription has already benefited subscribers with new features, but now they are “old” features. The following example makes the idea more understandable:

In 2026, when everyone who has subscribed receives the eligible LFL features, there could be a “feature pack” from the year 2025 for purchase by those who haven't subscribed at a prorated value that more or less corresponds to a subscription to those non-cloud features. These non-cloud features are no longer new and have already been paid for with the subscription.

This would keep subscribers like me who like new features fresh, as well as allowing the less enthusiastic basic user (there are many) to add improvements to the software engine and features from time to time. There could be a lag of a year or two for these improvements to be purchased by non-subscribers.

I am getting more and more disappointed, to be honest.

We were told there would be a legacy fallback license for all customers! And that it was going to include all non-ai or cloud features!

This is no longer the case.

    Why?

We were told there would be a legacy fallback license for all customers!

I do not believe this is the case. Can you provide a reference for this statement?

And that it was going to include all non-ai or cloud features!

What excluded feature do you believe does not make use of AI or the cloud?

I'd think that only what Mark dubbed "older features" are in the L10 FFS, the "early access features" are not because they came after L10.

I think that's correct on desktop, as things stand now (i.e., up until v37). On mobile, we've just released Sermon Builder and Sermon Manager for Android to beta, and those aren't on the exclusion list.

But there are likely to be another 17 releases between now and legacy fallback being issued, so who knows what else will be added to LFL between now and then.

    Thanks Mark!!!

This should be helpful for those debating the subscription path or purchasing the L10 FFS first.

Will this and ongoing lists be incorporated with the Features file that you posted a while back. The ability to see all features side by side with the noted exclusions would also be beneficial for clarity.

If you look at Mark's post of excluded Features, those listed under "Older Features" are the L10 FFS Features that you will not retain with a Fallback License - so if they are important to you - you'd need to consider the purchase of the L10 FFS. If you have purchased the L10 FFS, the Fallback exclusions do not apply to you - if you own the L10 FFS you will have the features regardless of subscribing or not.

    Thanks for this Mark,

Could you clarify because I'm feeling a little slow...

I currently have an old Logos Base Package.

I'm debating upgrading to the L10 FFS. If I do and I'll put it on a payment plan for 6 or so months, will I be required to subscribe immediately to pro on release as well on order to potentially benefit from the fall back license. Or can I hold off 6 months whilst paying for the FFS, then subscribe and begin the two year window then?

    Thanks!

The Legacy Fallback perk might not be around forever, but I'm confident that you'll still be able to get on board in six months' time after your payment plan is paid off.

Quick Question: Is there a deadline that L10 users need to sign up for the new subscriptions to lock in a LFL? Thanks!

Books which are part of the subscription are temporary licenses; you lose access to them when you unsubscribe. The fallback license is for features only; books are not included.

This was a question I had because of the following. In addition to the features, the Full Feature Set has some books/resources such as interlinears and dictionaries etc. Since it's a feature set and the subscriptions are also that, I wondered if I would receive some of these resources in LFL. But the answer I received by e-mail was no. This has also been answered by them on the forum. We won't be receiving any books or interlinears on LFL.

I was one of the moderately vocal "concerned citizens" when subscriptions were first announced ... I've been with y'all 30+ years and $32k+ with 16k+ books later, I was concerned about perpetual features, and a bit about AI.

I just want to let you know that now all the decisions have been made and info is out there with pricing, I am *VERY SATISFIED* with the solution.  I'm upgrading my Max from 1 year to 2 as soon as the sales dept gets that order code sorted out.

THANK YOU for dealing with the worried grumblers like me.  You dun gud!

Here is Mark's answer from a former post.  I too subscribed early.  So basically you will "qualify" for the LFL after your two years of subscription but won't get it until it is actually released.  Hope this helps.

    I’ve asked about this too.
my understanding is that since the subscriptions weren’t “official” nor at their final price levels and categories until Aug-Oct-ish, Octover is being used for that fallback determination date - keep in mind that what one falls back TO is based on what level of subscription one has maintained - and there were no “levels” in early access initially.

The ADVANTAGE of having maintained a continuous subscription from the early days is that any PURCHASES during that time “count towards” the initial 5% off certificate they will be first issuing next Feb-Mar(?).

Thanks for sharing that, Jim. It sounds like an "after the event" explanation. I don't recall any caveats or limitations being announced with regard to early-adopter subscriptions. Given that nice words were spoken about those who paid for Early Access, I would expect that Logos would reward our commitment to the platform and to the subscription model by bringing forward the two-year deadline. Rather than mealy-mouthed "explanations" that, after all, those Early Access subscriptions "weren't official."

(BTW, I was an Early Access subscriber to Pro, and have continued with an unbroken Pro subscription since mid April.)

Any comment from Mark Barnes, or other officials?

    Update:

I emailed Logos Customer Support with the following questions. Their reply follows below.

    I asked:

    1. My subscription, starting on 14 April 2024, continues unbroken to this day.
    2. What happens, if, on 15 April 2026, I cancel my subscription? (That would be over two years continuous subscription, as required.)
    3. Would my installation revert to a bare-metal Logos install on that day?
      1. If so, what would happen in October 2026 when FallBack Licenses are issued? Would my eligible features then be restored?
      2. What will happen to my installation during the 6 months (April-October 2026) in that situation?

    Logos Customer Support replied:

1 - The software would revert back to what has been paid for on the account.

2- A fallback license would be applied to the account with the qualifying features at that time. We do not have a list of features that will be available at that time.

     3 - Same answer to #1.

So now we know?? WHEN WOULD THE FALLBACK LICENSE be applied? April or October? What happens between times?
