I haven't found the option to set links clicked in the Forums to open in a new tab - it would be nice to not have the tab I am browsing the Forums with be used to follow links.

Currently - the work around is to Right Click and choose to open in a new Tab - it would be nice to not have to do that.

Unfortunately, I fall in the camp of those who want a new tab only on request.

@Frank Sauer Can you provide an example of this? Thank you!

This actually surprises me a little - with all the work you do in the Forums, I would have thought you to be a multi Tab user for the ease of quoting posts, etc. (At least based on the Old Forums quoting style)

If you're looking for another site that opens links in a new tab - Reddit would be one

I can understand why you'd think that - I do use multiple tabs once or twice a day. But my screens show a strong influence of Scandinavian/Japanese minimalistic design.

I definitely lean towards a minimalist practice myself - even though I prefer the "new tab" - my practice is closing the tab as soon as I'm done with it - while not having to navigate away from the page on my main tab.

Holding down Ctrl (or Cmd on macOS) and left-clicking is another (and maybe more efficient) way to open a link in a background tab.

This is what I do since many websites I visit don't open urls in different windows.

This is what I do. Most of the time I want a new tab is that I am heading to another source of information and I don’t want to lose my current spot. In my research workflows I prefer the option to initiate the new tab, rather than the other way around.

And even easier is (at least in Chrome on Windows) to click (not turn) with the mouse wheel if you have that.

Thank you for your suggestion and discussion here! I have been researching this idea and it becomes an issues particularly on mobile, but I think we'll stay where we are for now. I've boiled down some of the issues to these two categories (while considering mobile users) …

    User Experience Considerations

    • Disruption of Navigational Flow: Forcing links to open in new tabs can disrupt users’ navigation, as they may not realize a new tab has opened, leading to confusion. This behavior can be particularly disorienting for less tech-savvy users or those on mobile devices.
    • Loss of Back Button Functionality: Opening links in new tabs disables the browser’s back button, a primary navigation tool for users. This can make it harder for users to return to their previous content.

    Accessibility Concerns

    • Challenges for Assistive Technology Users: Users relying on screen readers or other assistive technologies may not be notified when a new tab opens, leading to confusion and a disrupted browsing experience.
    • Increased Cognitive Load: Managing multiple tabs can be overwhelming, especially for users with cognitive disabilities, as it requires additional effort to keep track of multiple open pages.

Thanks for considering it - I'll continue the work around. Though I hope those that are forcing the Dynamic Toolbar on Subscribers will take note of your very thoughtful points here - especially disrupting navigational flow and implement a toolbar option so some of us can give the LFL a chance to impress @Mark Barnes (Logos) @Bradley Grainger (Logos)
