Is it possible to see the relevant footnotes from all Bibles at the same time?

I often find myself looking at a verse and wanting to know if any of my owned Bibles have something to say about it in their notes. Is there a way to see this without opening every Bible individually?

The most straightforward ways I can think of to see this would be for Text Comparison to have an option to allow inclusion of the floating footnotes, or Passage Guide to have a section on Bible footnotes, or Power Lookup to have the option to show all Bible footnotes on the current verse (rather than just the currently open Bible).

Hi Clint. Welcome to the forums.

Try this:

Open Search then Books (not bible); In the search window from left to right (the blue text dropdowns) select your bible; then select Footnote Text; then All Passages.

In the search box use: Milestone:bible pericope.

Thanks, I appreciate your time answering this. Since you still need to twirl them all down and click on them to open each Bible in a new pane to actually read each footnote, it looks to be about the same amount of work as it is to switch to each Bible individually to check for a footnote. I was hoping Logos had a way to aggregate these resources.

Actually what is shown in the search result IS the footnote. You do need to click the down arrow for each result to show the result in each Bible. You do not need to open any Bible. This is the best I can offer you and it is what you are trying to do, just maybe not in the format you wish. you can make a suggestion in the feedback section for your other ideas which are very good as well.

Just hipshooting here, but would the Cited By tool work for this, using a collection of all one's bibles of interest? Or does it ignore notes/footnotes?

The closest I could get to an 'automated' footnote displayer (linkable to a Bible), was to use a CitedBy versus a grouping of Bibles. Effectively it's a Text Comparison plus footnotes. Not totally satisfying but quite interesting.

Thanks Doc B and DMB; I wasn't able to get the CitedBy tool to do quite what I wanted. It seems to show the footnotes on hover, but only for references other than the current verse reference (for example, the first seven results in the attached screen shot). For the current verse reference, the hover only shows the verse itself. Strange.

The best solution I've found so far is to use the Layouts function to temporarily switch to a view that has all my Bibles visible which tend to feature helpful footnotes, and set them to the same link set. This seems to work best to load them in separate panels (instead of using the parallel reader) because you can grid them in both rows and columns and the Power Lookup will respond to whichever one you give focus.

It looked like it worked on the Matt passage. I think try the CitedBy tool suggestion and see if that works for you. Apologies.

Thanks John. It doesn't look to me like it did on the Matthew passage. Aren't those just the verse and the passage headers it included?

Fixes aside, the ability to do what the OP wants is a great suggestion for a Logos feature…it seems like an intuitive task for Bible software to easily accomplish. I'd like to see it added to the list of work-on-soon additions to the software.

I have created a couple layouts showing various study bible notes, but it has limitations since 'study bibles' are split into two functional groups- 'bible notes' and 'study bibles.' That makes it harder to do with a layout. And not all notes in bibles are found in study bibles, reference bibles and most modern translations have textual notes, alternate readings, and even some cross-references in note form.

Some type of tool, interactive tool, or resource set could be created that makes this task simple. I think this would be a great selling point for the software as a whole.

Thanks Doc B, it's nice to know I'm not crazy. I'm a pretty new user to Logos, and this was one of the first things I imagined the software would let me do (produce a collation of relevant footnotes and apparatuses). Now that I know a little more about how these digital books are set up, I can see why it's a complex thing to accomplish. Jason, will do. Thanks everyone for your help!

There are a handful of feedback items on the text comparison tool. (such as below) On some rainy day during the Christmas holiday, I might see about trolling around to suggest a combined feedback item.

With AI, there are some exciting possibilities to supercharge this from an original languages and footnotes/translator notes point of view.

In the meantime, I would build something in the Cited By tool, as suggested.

Translator's Notes are one way to know if a bible says something about a word and you can narrow the Search to a verse or chapter as you wish. The brute way to do it is to use the wildcard * because you don't necessarily know words in the Note, but you can use some key words. NET bible use tn exclusively. For ESV, LSB see the example below
