BUG? Why is the Bullinger dataset less precise than the source.

from Bullinger, Ethelbert William. Figures of Speech Used in the Bible. London; New York: Eyre & Spottiswoode; E. & J. B. Young & Co., 1898.

This particular form of Ellipsis has a distinct name, BRACHYLOGIA (βραχυλογία from βραχύς, brachus, short, and λόγος, logos, discourse), English, Bra-chyl´-o-gy. Or from the Latin, BRĒVILOQUENCE, it means brevity of speech or writing, and is used of an Ellipsis, in which words are omitted chiefly for the sake of brevity; which words may easily be supplied from the nature of the subject.

Gen. 25:32.—“And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birthright do to me?” There must be supplied, the thought, if not the words:—“I will sell it.” So with the next verse. “And Jacob said, Swear to me this day [that thou wilt sell it me]; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.”

Ethelbert William Bullinger, Figures of Speech Used in the Bible (London; New York: Eyre & Spottiswoode; E. & J. B. Young & Co., 1898), 47–48.

But the tagging is not brachylogia but simply ellipsis i.e. figureofSpeech:name:Ellipsis for Genesis 25:32

The dataset — which was really the first labelled dataset that Logos made back in the Logos Now era, so like early Logos 6 (?) — is basically a collection of all of the references in a given chapter where a chapter discusses a particular figure.

My guess is that Bullinger has used the same reference(s) in more than one chapter, and that multiples weren't supported way back when the dataset was created.

Context: I say this as the one who made the dataset back in the day. I'm fairly sure it hasn't been touched since.

Given the errors I've found in it are primarily treating all references as an example of the main topic even when that Is not why they are mentioned. That sounds about right. Perhaps, I should break down and do some serious editing.

Can’t you link the actual resource to scroll with your Bible?

No, Bullinger is not organized by or indexed by a bible index. Even if it were, that would not correct bad data which I am encountering primarily through searches.

Forgive me my ignorance on this, as I have not used it in Logos. I have a print copy which I have used in the past. It has a scripture index in the back. Index III "Index of texts and passages". That is how I used it.

It is strange to me that Logos has the resource and a dataset based on the book, but no Bible index? How does a person use this resource then?

I know the Companion Bible notes figures of speech for each verse in its commentary, but they reference an Appendix in the Companion Bible. I suppose you could do a search from there to Figures of speech.

What exactly does the dataset do for you if it cannot alert you to the use of figures of speech on a verse by verse basis?

To simplify a bit. For a book to be indexed by Bible reference requires that a reference is used only once and they are basically in order - think of headwords in dictionaries, Bible references as "headwords" in Bibles, study Bibles. Bible commentaries. An index allows one to "open the book to the precise location". Bible references without an index may be in any order and as many times as one would like. Here to find a reference you essentially are running a search - you get search results not opening to a precise location because there may be many locations. To link resources, you must have an index in common. To access information one must simple know the text string or Logos tag you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. I just tried working with this in Logos. I can link a Bible to the Companion Bible. The Companion Bible notes list figures of speech in each verse where they appear. (not sure if it is exhaustive or not). When you click on the name of the figure, it takes you to Appendix 6 of the Companion Bible, which is a very condensed and concise version of the full Figures of Speech book.

I tried highlighting the name of the figure and right clicking, but I assume for Figures of Speech to appear as a search option you would have to use priority?

No, when you right click and select a figure of speech, there is no lookup link so prioritization would do nothing. The Figures of Speech Used in the Bible is basically treated as a glossary.
