what do you think about the new world translation
It's idiosyncratic, wooden, and I find it neither useful nor beautiful.
Let's move this post to the books and resources forum, and focus the conversation on how the New World Translation is unique to other translations so as to not invite theological debate and controversy. Thank you!
I find it useful when dealing with texts or people who use it as their preferred Bible, otherwise I rarely use it except when specifically looking for uncommon translations.
It was not translated by scholars. It is a translation intended to fit a worldview.
Excuse me, but it is inappropriate on the forums to call it a heresy. There is a very high probability that your beliefs are considered heresy by other people on the forums. IIRC all Western Christianity is heretical …the Catholics heretical to the Orthodox, the Protestants heretical to the Catholics, the unitarians heretical to the trinitarians, you get the idea. So please read the guidelines especially regarding making people comfortable as you would in your own living eoom.
@MJ. Smith I disagree. If I said that I don't want the "satanic bible" in Logos because it is demonic, would you say I have no right to "demonize" other people's beliefs on the forums? What's next? Should Faithlife take out of Logos any book that speaks of heresies for fear that it may offend someone from these groups who uses the software and the forums? Logos does have a confessional identity although it is somewhat vaguely stated and implemented. Moreover, a business that uses slogans like "live in the Word" "Know God" or "Serving the Church" or portrays the value of its A.I. implementation as "results from resources you can trust" puts out certain expectations. I do not find @Yiteng's question inappropriate.
Well, if we're following Jason's guiderails, diss'ing another group, vs discussing a translation would seem to have left the tracks.
Well, if we are following Jason's guidelines…
Let's be consistent in how the guidelines are applied and let them apply to all equally.
My first thought was that it isn't a Logos product and not a product suggestion and therefore outside the forum guidelines. I also note the person posing the question has never posted before, so one wonders as to the reason behind the question.
@Francis
I try to be consistent; I also try to intervene only when no one else has and am proud of how well the longterm forumites have learned to not label others heretics. There was a time when Catholics, Mormons, Bereans, Jehovah's Witnesses … were all considered fair game and subject to abuse - to the point that on Faithlife, one user had to be blocked from contacting another user; the abuse was so bad that one MVP left the forums because it was inappropriate for a pastor to be associated with a forum with such vitriol. There were forumites who gave no clue as to their beliefs because of the likely responses. I am from the Pacific Northwest which is often teased about their politeness - I am sure I reflect that but I do so proudly. In my living room no Logosian insults/demeans another Logosian by calling them a heretic. To many "heretic" implies damned - a judgment we are unqualified to make. So I'll be "damned" if I will let a forumite insult a whole class of Logosians based on their personal (partially erroneous) beliefs.
Sorry to have caused a dispute here regarding this matter. I didn't mean to insult or demean anyone. @MJ. Smith were distorting my words and intentions.
As a matter of fact, your finger-pointing reply "There is a very high probability that your beliefs are considered heresy by other people on the forums." makes me uncomfortable too, actually. You don't even know me, and don't even know my faith. How do you know there is a VERY HIGH probability???
As an ESL English speaker, I would suggest reframing this sentence to something like "One's beliefs may be considered heresy by other people"…… in order to make people feel comfortable, in line with your usual approach.
Back to the topic, I understand that different denominations may have different traditions and different practices. Sometimes we have different doctrinal understanding and cause some theological disputes. Yes, only God knows everything and only God can judge. We don't LIGHTLY label others as heresies or condemn others. We tolerate and respect differences on the condition that we all believe in the same God, that is Jesus Christ our saviour.
However, it seems that this is not the same case with the New World Translation and JW. According to my limited understanding, it is an OBVIOUS and widely-known "non-mainstream/heterodox belief" (if this wording make people feel better) that denies the trinity, the Godhead of Jesus Christ, and the bodily resurrection. (Is this understanding erroneous and I need to go and do more homework?)
In the entire New Testament, the apostles are busy admonishing believers to stay vigilant and contend for the faith that was once delivered to all the saints. The Bible doesn't deny the fact that there are destructive heresies that are denying the Master who bought them, and many deceivers that do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. For such people, even apostle John said do not receive them or greet them.
I know I am not as knowledgeable or learned as many of you are here. The core issue is not how much we know, but with whom we stand.
Since English is not my native language, sometimes I may not express my ideas very precisely or have advanced word rendering, but I am being very careful with my wording this time. I do know that we shall NOT allow the heretic and false teachings erose our faith. When you see a brother or sister wanders from the truth, don't you try to bring him or her back? Or just keep smiling and being polite?
Off topic, I know that in the US, the political correctness agenda have made many people silent, including pastors/preachers, and accustomed to not commenting. However, this shall not be the same in God's church (even though Logos is just a faith-based business).
P.S.: I feel very uncomfortable and discouraged to see that my reply was removed (yet the post quoting my reply still exists). It just reminds me of deleting posts of the conservatives who express different opinions on the left-wing agenda on other social platforms. If anyone wants to delete, please delete this entire meaningless thread. Thank you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen.
I'm sorry my comment made you feel uncomfortable. My point was that everyone is considered a heretic by some other group. But Logos needs to serve a broad range of Christians in order to remain financially viable. Therefore, it is in the best interests of all of us that everyone who would use Logos feel that the Logos forums are a safe place to ask questions - and not be confronted by others' belief that they are outside the parameters of "Christian". I find it best to interact in the forums on the principle "anyone who considers themselves to be Christian is treated as Christian." There are other places where it is appropriate for me to express my actual position on their beliefs.
But again, I apologize for making you uncomfortable with how I made my point. Welcome to the forums.
@Yiteng while understanding and seeking to abide by the terms of use of these forums (the guidelines), I just want to say that I sympathize and I am sad that your original post was handled the way it was. I really appreciate the grace and courage of your reply. I would have written to you personally to say this (instead of here) but as far as I know, we no longer have the ability to reach out directly to other Logos users as we used to. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you as well.
Perhaps the comment of Frederick W. Danker will suffice.
Not to be snubbed is the New World Translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, Rendered from the Original by the New World Bible Translation Committee (Brooklyn: Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc., 1950–63). The translation of the New Testament appeared first (1950) and was then combined in 1963 with the various volumes of the Old Testament (1953, 1955, 1957,1958,1960). The “orthodox” do not possess all the truth, yet one does well to “test the spirits.”

Personally, I'd like it in Logos, relative to Text Comparison. Else one is left with what are considered the more egregious examples.
For the same reason, 'Jefferson Bible' (in Logos) which was closer to a theist pov.
Choppy and corrupted!
We're going to close this thread out now. Thank you, everybody.
Is there any way to know what sermon series are covered in this archive? The preview is very limited. https://www.logos.com/product/81272/matt-chandler-sermon-archive? Perhaps someone could screenshot the contents and also advise how user friendly the index is? I have the John Piper sermons free in another Bible app and…
I own a 30+ year old hardback copy of Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline book. I know he's updated the book a few times so I decided to search Logos to add it to my library and read the updated version. To my joy, I found that Logos has the Audio book for 20 th Anniversary Celebration of Discipline. To my shock, I…
In the video about version 45 the ability to import sermon material was mentioned. I don't see how in Sermon Manager or Sermon Builder. What am I missing?
This book is not available in my country for Logos, but I can get the physical hard copy at my bookstore. Is there any way to get around this restriction.
I noticed in the Lexham English Bible translation of Revelation 3:3, “If therefore you are not on the alert” from “ἐὰν οὖν μὴ γρηγορήσῃς”. Should that not be “if therefore you not be on the alert”? As “γρηγορήσῃς” is subjunctive, no?
