That does not make sense to me.
We signed up for a Beta program. I expected ahead of time that there would be frequent updates.
Am I misunderstanding you?

Updates, yes. But I've had to endure three re-indexings (nice word, huh?) of all my resources in the past 24 hours due to the 'updates'. In fact the third one is still running. So I hope any future updates are bundled and only require one re-indexing. (Pipe dream I suppose.)
I may be a beta tester but I do have other work I need to do and re-indexing slows everything down.

I have resources comming out that I have bought as pre-pubs and you are right we have had a number of updates that have been sent in the last week.
I too don't want to clog up my computer so have to manage the download and indexing time.
I am using L3 on my laptop and keeping that up to date. Having been super keen to download beta 3 and found false alarms, I have decided to go slower. I was expecting to update to beta 4 on Monday evening but it didn't come till Tuesday. I also had a resource from pre-pub purchaces all of which would require reindexing.
As it happens because I chose not to open L4 (and use L3) I had no updates. I watched the listings and found thatr several updates were also coming.
Working like the tortoise and not the hare has saved me time reindexing and I organised myself so that the reindexing process took place while I was asleep!
I have to do it this way to keep me sane. Indexing just takes too long any other way[sn]

Yes. I did. and should they send one out again today, yes...I will update. I was half kidding and half frustrated. I know they need to have things tested out, but I would rather live without Biblical people/things/places until the next Monday. The way I look at it is this. If they send an update out every day that ties up my computer and prevents me from fully testing the Beta then in the end all we know is that the re-indexing works...I haven't had a chance to put it through the ringer because its been updating the whole time.

Which is why they say, and always have said that you only should have the beta installed if it's not your primary machine...things get broken, things don't work like they should, etc. [:O]

I sure didn't make it sound like a joke.

Sorry, I did not pick up on the joke either.
I think the point still stands for all of us - and I include myself because there have been frustrating times for me as well. Beta 4 seems to have especially had extra downloads and so forth.
But this is a Beta program and we all are volunteers. In fact, as long as we don't break the NDA, we can go back to v3 if we want to. I don't think that would be very fair to Logos, but if you found that you did not have the time you thought you would when this all started, you could simply quit testing.
It has taken me extra time, just like everyone else. But I am a very loyal customer and want to help. With the direction v4 is going, I also feel like I am helping (in a small way) others that will be using the final product. I think v4 will open electronic Bible study to more people than ever.
Face it - v3 had a high learning curve. You had to WANT to learn it because of what the program was capable of doing. I spent several hundred dollars simply on training through MOrris Proctor's seminars, which were worth it. But how many software products do you have to spend extra money just to learn it? THey are out there, but they are usually professional-level things. I open MS Office and start working. I've never been to a training seminar for that.
Most of us are Pastors, Seminary students, church leaders, and serious Bible study-ers. I can see v4 taking Bible study way past our group. That means more business for Logos, which means more development, more titles, and probably all at lower prices.
I don't think anyone is wrong for feeling frustrated from time to time, but perhaps this helps bring some perspective to what we are doing. We are helping Logos develop their best product ever, and that could lead to more people into serious Bible study! I like that idea...
Ready for Beta 5! Tuesday night again?

HMM. Might be nice if I had a second machine handy. Didn't see that as a requirement to be a beta tester, though.

I agree. And to really fish out some of the bugs it needs to be on your primary computer and it needs to be used regularly, not just 30 min before you go to bed. I have no problem if it messes up my computer, it could use a fresh install anyway :-)

Mark,
I don't have a second machine really either but when beta testing...those are the risks...that's all I was saying; it's to be expected during a beta program.

Definitely go overnight on the index if possible. Now I have a good baseline on my systems, I can get about 6 hours to index my desktop and about 15 hours for my laptop. So if I plan it just right I can have them both ready to play with when I get up in the morning.
System Specs
* Laptop | Pentium 4 @2.4 Ghz 384MB RAM | Windows XP Home SP3, all patches.
* Desktop | AMD X64 3800+ (2.0Ghz) dual core | 4GB RAM | Dual 22" widescreen monitors at 1680x1050 | Nvidia 7300 GS 256MB video RAM |500 GB Raid Mirror. | Windows 7 64bit RC 7100 - all patches.Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Robert,
Not to be argumentative but all this re-indexing isn't exactly what I expected when signing on for beta testing. Might I say that in all likelihood none of us knew how often we'd have to re-index and how long it would take before hand?
I did expect some crashes and not being able to use the beta for my regular work. That is normal in beta testing. However to have to re-index 3 times in 24 hours seems a bit much, especially if Logos could bundle all that and make us do the re-indexing only once. That's all I'd like to see. If it can be managed, minimize how many times we have to go through a re-indexing to keep up with the beta updates.
I appreciate that some control over installing updates has been returned to us. That's is good. Now, please, Logos, do what you can to minimize the actual number of downloads and required re-indexings.
BTW: It would help if there was a way to pause re-indexing and resume it. At least when you and I need speed and processor power for a while, we could get it.

There is. Right click the tray ICON and select "pause indexing four hours". Voila you have a pause. If you want to resume indexing before the four hours is up, right click the icon and resume.

You can do this. Right click on the system tray icon and there is an option to pause the index for 4 hours. I have it paused right now because I need my resources focused elsewhere.

Remind me not to pray for patience...
..I think when they have looked at the issue given the feedback, I hope we may get a better indexing process, but maybe (just for now) we have to suffer the tribulation that beta testing brings..

Nothing like an answer before the question is asked. Very nice. I'll have to take a look for that next time.

Hope is on the horizon....Bradley described in another post that future enhancements will not require an entire re-index. I'm more then willing to deal with massive indexing on first installation. I'm even willing to deal with it once a monthish.

A minimal number means maximal size when they go out! I asked for minimal download size and knowledge of the content of each.

There is a way to not install updates until you want to.
I believe a few of us are already doing this, but in case you are concerned about the frequent updates and reindexing and didn't know how to avoid them, you can:
1. go to "Tools" "Program Settings"
2. Choose "No" for "Automattically Download Updates" and "No" for "Use Internet".
That way, the updates won't be detected and installed.
After my computer was indexing for 3 straight days on a previous series of updates I did this and it works great. Now I don't need to avoid using L4 (as I had been at times) and I can wait until the flow of updates seems to have stopped to change those settings to "Yes" and restart Libronix before going to bed.
