SBL Greek New Testament: What's Next?

I've said in this forum and on the Logos blog that there would be "more coming" with the release of the SBL Greek New Testament (SBLGNT).

Now it's time to let you know what is coming. Unlike the SBLGNT and Apparatus, these tools and resources will only be available for Logos users. We're making them available to those of you who have already purchased certain packages or resources from us.

We're hoping these new resources will be available some time over the next few weeks. We're waiting for a service release for the Logos 4 Mac version to support the referencing systems of the LEB and the SBLGNT; once that has been released then we'll get everything together in order to roll out these new resources (and the revised LEB with its reverse interlinear) to users who qualify for them.

What are the new resources?

Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament: SBL Edition. This is an interlinear version of the SBL Greek New Testament. It has the same type of data as the existing NA27-based Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament (lemmas, morph, transliterations, Louw-Nida references, Strongs, and two levels of English glossing), only it is an interlinear of the SBLGNT text. It also includes apparatus markers, which are linked to the SBLGNT apparatus. Thanks to Hall Harris for his work in getting out this edition of the interlinear.

Who gets it? Users who are registered as owning the Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament ("LGNTI", the NA27 edition) will be automatically unlocked for the Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament: SBL Edition ("LGNTISBL") and the apparatus. If you own the LGNTI through a package (e.g. Scholar's Silver (LE) or higher) you'll also receive the LGNTISBL for free.

Cascadia Syntax Graphs of the New Testament: SBL Edition. Yes, it's true, we have even syntactically analyzed the SBL Greek New Testament. Randall Tan and Andi Wu were able to squeeze this into their already busy schedules (why not say "thanks" by pre-ordering a syntax prepub of the LXX and/or Apostolic Fathers ?). So, not only is the SBLGNT free with an apparatus. Not only does it have an interlinear. Not only does it have a full English translation (the revised LEB) with a reverse interlinear, it is also completely syntactically analyzed, viewable and searchable in Logos Bible Software.

Who gets it? Users who already have the NA27-based Cascadia materials (that is, those who have purchased or upgraded to Scholar's Silver (LE) and above) will have the SBLGNT based syntax materials unlocked on their systems.

Some follow-up: Once the LGNTISBL is released and available, you may notice that the original LGNTI will no longer be individually purchasable on the Logos web site. It will be replaced by a Lexham NT Interlinear collection, which will include the LGNTI, the LGNTISBL, and the SBLGNT Apparatus. You'll also note it will be the same price as the individual LGNTI is presently. This means the LGNTISBL will essentially be free to people who purchase the LGNTI. Isn't that cool?

And once the Cascadia Syntax Graphs of the New Testament: SBL Edition are released, we will run periodic updates for new purchasers (or upgraders) of Scholar's Silver (LE) and above to unlock LGNTISBL and the additional Cascadia materials.

(Want to look into upgrading to Scholar's Silver (LE)? Check it out here)

Have I mentioned we're excited about the SBL Greek New Testament? We are. And we hope that you are too, and that you're able to use these new tools in your study of God's Word.

    Hi Folks.

Just a little on download sizes here, for when things are available.

SBLGNT+APP: ~ 11.5 MB (we have fixed a few small issues, increased the leading of the text, and added a reference hotspot to the verse indicator in the APP)
LGNTISBL (new Interlinear): ~ 21.8 MB
CSGNTSBL (new syntax graphs and database): ~ 56.2 MB
LEB+LEBNT (updated LEB and reverse interlinear): ~ 30.3 MB

Possible total: ~ 120 MB for all items.

Hope this helps you be aware of what's coming and when it comes if you qualify for these unlocks. Depending on how and when the new updates (interlinear, syntax database) are unlocked to your account, you may end up with multiple downloads. Wish I could speak with more clarity, but I hope these numbers help a bit.

    What are the new resources?

Well, this is exciting. LGNTI has been my favourite GNT since it was first released in 2008 & Cascadia is getting to be my favourite NT Syntax engine.

Will Cascadia queries be able to run on both engines (databases)?

Very  nice. Logos has become a publisher in their own right of some import! This only shows how serious Logos is about providing cutting edge tools for Bible study.

And thanks, too, for the great price (free)!

    Hi Dave

    Glad you're excited!

Will Cascadia queries be able to run on both engines (databases)?

Not yet. And because queries can't be copied from one database to a different database, copy/paste won't work either.

I'm not sure when this will be possible, but I do know it is on the proverbial "list".

The issue is making sure we don't run a query on the wrong database. Right now, queries are tied to specific databases; what I think we need to do is add the notion of a database schema or family (e.g. Cascadia) to the mix.

One way to speed the issue would be for everyone to subscribe to the Cascadia LXX Graphs and Cascadia Apostolic Fathers Graphs; that would make it even more important to get done. :)

I want to repeat a suggestion I have made previously. Please unbundle the Cascadia Syntax Graphs so that those of us who have the Original Languages version can add it to our library.

When will the Lexham English Bible reflect the SBLGNT? I noticed that Jude 5 still has "the Lord" instead of Jesus.

    The corrected SBL Apparatus downloaded.

One thing I noticed right away is that in the pop-ups from the SBLGT Apparatus the small markers in the Greek text are not rendered:

This is known and I'm of the impression a later update (application, not resource) will address this issue.

Thanks, Jack. And I think that the latest L4Mac beta and L4Mac service release will solve the navigation issue that Mac users were experiencing with the initial release of the SBLGNT.

    Hi folks.

Just a heads up: I believe the new items (Lexham Interlinear version of SBLGNT, Cascadia Syntax Graphs of the Greek NT: SBL Edition) will be unlocked for those who qualify some time this morning.

As you can understand, we've been busy with the logos.com site update. I was informed this might happen this morning, but site-update-related items might take precedence.

When it happens, the unlock(s) will be automatic (you don't have to do it yourself). Once they're unlocked to your account, download should happen automatically. I wanted those looking for these to be aware they could be coming. Here are approximate file sizes to expect:

LGNTISBL (new Interlinear): ~ 21.8 MB
CSGNTSBL (new syntax graphs and database): ~ 56.2 MB

Okay, I restarted Logos and they came down.  Not sure why Logos restarts are required sometimes to get resources, and sometimes "Update Now" will get them without a restart.  Is it that existing resources will be updated without a restart and new resources are only detected after restart?

Yes... because L4 syncs licences on initial startup but not on Update now, though why it works that way is another question [:)]

I have recently, within the last couple of days, upgraded to the Scholars Silver package. Not just because of these two resources but they were a big push. Just checked my Library and the items haven't downloaded.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Hi Paul.

We run a regular job once a week on the server to unlock these extra data sets for new collection purchasers. I'll check and see what day it's run on so you can know when to expect the downloads.

    Thanks for your patience.

The job runs on Wednesday afternoons; I just received confirmation that it ran (like, in the past half hour). So hopefully next time you start your Logos, you'll get the necessary resources.

Obviously it is only automatic for Logos 4. Is there a way to get an unlock code or something to make it available in Logos 3? I should qualify for the LGNTISBL since I have the LGNTI. My Logos 4 is broken right now, so I can't tell if I have it there or not. I downloaded LGNTISBL from ftp, but it shows up as locked for me in Logos 3.

Have you synced your licenses in LDLS3? Tools->Library Management->Synchronize Licenses

That should get your LDLS3 synced with the server account. From there, you should be able to view the resource. If not, then drop our customer service department an email with a short description of the problem, and I'm sure they'll be able to help you.
